No, the state never recommended St. Clare's close ... they recommended that Bellevue Close - they still haven't.
You area absolutely correct! The sad part is that most of the people ACTUALLY believe it!!!

Maybe the Gazette should go back and read the actual state recommendations instead of just spinning the story to fit what really happened.

In other business, Ellis President and Chief Executive Officer James Connolly will update county legislators on efforts to restructure health care in Schenectady County.
Why does James Connolly have to update the county legislatures about health care in Schenectady? So who's spin is the gazette spinning?

The gazette just takes whatever is told to them and prints it.(but then it depends on WHO is giving them the information) The recommendation to close St. Clares is NOT a fact!!! Great investigative reporting, huh?

I don't know if this is rumor or truth, but I was speaking to someone who works at Ellis Hospital and they said that the Ellis' nursing home facility will be taking over 2 floors at St. Clares by February.

Merger makes for long wait to get into hospital

I recently brought my son to the Ellis Campus on McClellan Street, which is now part of Ellis Hospital. After his diagnosis, the doctors determined he would have to be admitted and they had to transfer him to Ellis Hospital, as they no longer admit patients to the “old St. Clare’s.”
Five hours later is when the call came in that Ellis was ready for him to be moved over. So from start to finish, it took 10 hours to get him seen, diagnosed and admitted to the hospital. The head nurse at Ellis was getting upset because we kept questioning why this process was taking so long.
The staff at the Ellis Campus on Mc-Clellan was wonderful with both my son and me. However, I could tell they were just as frustrated as we were. Not only don’t they admit patients, they no longer offer a cafeteria on the weekends, so after being there for eight hours I had to call someone to bring me food.
I don’t know what the Berger Commission was thinking when it merged these hospitals, but it was a huge mistake. I know of others who have had these experiences, and in the future, I’ll go to St. Peter’s.

And when she goes to another county, I'm sure Schenectady loses some money some how.  Maybe they'll make it up on the gas taxes they won't give us a break on...but they will make money, since it costs more gas to run out of the county.

Ellis Hospital may consolidate women's health services at Bellevue
Wednesday, June 17, 2009
By Michael Lamendola (Contact)
Gazette Reporter

SCHENECTADY COUNTY — Ellis Hospital is considering a plan to consolidate women’s health services on its Bellevue campus rather than relocate them to the Nott Street campus, as initially proposed, a hospital official said.
“It is under consideration. It is an attractive alternative,” said Ellis spokeswoman Donna Evans. She added the decision is not final.
The proposal represents a change in direction for Ellis regarding efforts to realign medical services in Schenectady County following the closure of St. Clare’s Hospital in the city and Bellevue Women’s Hospital in Niskayuna.
Ellis took over both facilities within the last two years, prompted in part by a state mandate directed at reducing duplicate medical services and saving money. St. Clare’s surrendered its license in 2008, and Bellevue closed in 2007...........>>>>..........................>>>>.........http://www.dailygazette.com/news/2009/jun/17/0617_hospitals/

Good move! But why doesn't the county offer Glendale to Ellis? Let Ellis Hospital own and manage Glendale? Ellis nurses are already union...so there ya go! The only difference would be that the Glendale employees would not be tax paid union public county employees! They would be private union employees!

This was suggested and chatted about many months ago by some of the legislators and others like Marv Cermak. Of course it wouldn't benefit the county dems politically to do something that could possible be outside the box and also make great sense both for care and for fiscal considerations. But the "doctor" who is the political spinmeister (the same guy who engineered the closing of St Clare's) on the county leg' decided it would be better for the unions and SS's re-election chances if they spent 50 million on a new one. It must be Surhada's fault because he didn't reach out and build a consensus (i.e. bend over and kiss a*s) to get it accepted as a plan. Blame the guy whose good ideas don't get adopted, it is better than blaming the guys who reject the good ideas.

Ellis neighborhood parking problem bad, and getting worse

I live near Ellis Hospital in Schenectady. Every day I come home from work to find someone from Ellis has parked right in front of my house. I end up parking down the street and when I get up to go to work the next day, there is someone else from Ellis parking in front of my house, getting out of their car, wearing their Ellis ID badge and walking toward the hospital.
Calls to Ellis about this problem prove to be almost as frustrating as the problem itself. They say they will “look into it” but people keep parking on my street, where no private parking is available for taxpaying residents, who end up having to find somewhere else to go. Calls to the city reveal there are currently no ordinances for this situation. There should be some rules for businesses so that commercial parking does not overrun residential parking areas.
I have heard that the new Golub building going up has affected the parking and shut down a shuttle service Ellis used to have for employees in a previously vacant lot.
Why won’t Ellis Hospital talk to the owners of Sheridan Plaza and run the shuttles from there for employees. There is no reason a large organization such as Ellis should have a policy, or lack thereof, that causes its workers or clients to become a nuisance to surrounding neighborhoods. I am sure if I drove to Ellis and parked in the doctors’ spaces, or any of the administrators’ spaces, on a daily basis my car would be towed away.
What we need here is a show of mutual respect. Ellis Hospital, please manage your parking in a way that does not pawn off the problem on taxpaying residents in your area.
