Price Chopper bags to include terrorism tip line BY KATHLEEN MOORE Gazette Reporter Reach Gazette reporter Kathleen Moore at 395-3120 or moore@dailygazette.com
A new measure from the state’s Office of Homeland Security is billed as helping residents fight terrorists while they buy their groceries. Price Chopper will print the state’s Terrorism Tips Line telephone number on all of its grocery bags, along with the tips line motto: “If you see something, say something.” The goal is to keep New Yorkers from becoming complacent, said F. David Sheppard, director of the New York State Offi ce of Homeland Security. The agency asked Price Chopper to make the specially-marked bags. “It has been more than six years since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. We cannot allow ourselves as a state and as a nation to become complacent,” he said. “Through this partnership, our goal is to encourage citizens of New York and beyond that if they see something suspicious, they should tell the authorities. Citizens that remain vigilant in the war against terror help us to catch those who seek to do us harm.” Although it’s not clear that the tips line has produced any signifi - cant warnings about terrorism, Price Chopper President and CEO Neil Golub said the message on the grocery bags will encourage residents to pay closer attention to suspicious people around them. “Awareness of our surroundings can be a lifesaver,” Golub said. Spokeswoman Mona Golub said this is by no means the first time that Price Chopper bags were used to deliver messages. The company has printed messages about diabetes, heart attacks, cancer and other health concerns. “We have in our customer base an opportunity to deliver messages of safety,” she said. The Homeland Security messages will be printed within two weeks. The state Office of Homeland Security wants residents to be on the lookout for three things: bragging or threats about terrorism; suspicious mail; and luggage abandoned in crowded places. Homeland Security officials also advise residents to learn the normal routines of the people in their neighborhood, community and workplace, so that it’s easier to spot anything or anyone who is out of place. Residents who see anything suspicious are asked to call 1-866-SAFE-NYS. The free tips line is staffed 24-7 by the New York State Police.

Sounds like a good idea. Just makes you wonder how much of a kickback from the state Price Chopper gets for jumping in with both feet. I wonder how big this is on the bags.
Sorry here folks, but I don't think this is a big whoop! How long has it been now.....almost 7 YEARS!! That is all we hear about either on tv or in the newspaper is 'watching out for strange behavior'. Supposedly, even local police are equipted to handle such calls. And who will people focus on for suspicious terrorist behavior? MUSLIMS OF COURSE!! This will be a great one for the ACLU.
Ya wanna know how I feel about this? (say yes) We pay enough in federal and state and local taxes to fund the organizations that are supposed to be 'watching' for us! We have already been schooled on terrorism and what to look for and were told to call our local law enforcement. So what is this all about? Another fear tactic. And now they want us to become part of the 'big brother' movement.
I'll tell ya, I promise that if I see a low flying commercial plane headed toward a building, I will call 911!

We have lost people on mailings and now we have the 'watch your neighbor build a bomb and call the authorities' on the grocery bag that I just spent 1/3 more than I did last year on the same groceries.......
