I finally brought my mom home from the hospital today. Leaving Ellis Hospital in the middle of this snow storm was a trip. The roads in the city of Schenectady were treacherous!! Thank God my husband had new Cooper snow tires put on this year, they are great.

But anyway, as soon as I crossed the Schenectady/Rotterdam line I could breathe a little easier, my knuckles weren't so white, my heart slowed down to normal and I could feel my body relax and all because the roads were great. Rotterdam does a wonderful job during snow storms! GREAT JOB!

ALBANY Motorists are urged to travel with caution this afternoon as snow is caking Capital Region roadways with about an inch of snow an hour.

The heavy snowfall is expected to last until about 3 p.m., after which time accumulation will slow until it ends at about 7 p.m., said Tom Wasula, meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Albany.

It was slow going on many area roadways. Traffic on I-90 and other highways was rolling at just 20 mph.

Many flights into and out of the Albany International Airport have been canceled because of flights being delayed or canceled from other airports, predominantly John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York. Travelers should check their flight's status before heading out.

Some night events have also been canceled, such as Union College's women's basketball game. But the Times Union Center said its "Disney On Ice Presents Disney/Pixar's Finding Nemo" performance is still on.

Weather watchers around Albany reported accumulation of two inches or more between 10:30 a.m. and noon, Wasula said.

Total accumulation for today's storm could get up to 3 inches north of Albany, 6 inches around Albany, and up to a foot of snow falling south in areas of Greene and Columbia counties. The storm is coming from the south, hence the heavier totals closer to downstate New York.

While Capital Region residents will get a taste of snow today, they'll have to wait until the weekend for the first heavy snowfall of the year.

National Weather Service meteorologist Brian Frugis said most of the region could be hit with "at least" six inches of snow Saturday night and Sunday morning.

After a 48-hour break, he said the snow is expected to start up again Saturday night, heavier than today: "It could be much more significant."

The town of East Greenbush has issued a snow emergency in advance of the impending snow storm later today. No vehicles are allowed to park on town roads beginning at 10 a.m. today. The town will announce when the emergency will end.

Due to the inclement weather the North Greenbush Town Board has decided to cancel tonight's Town Board meeting scheduled for 7 p.m., according to the town clerk. The meeting will take place at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 19, at the town offices.

The city can't afford to plow their roads they spent all their money on the million dollar block of State Street.

Highway Excellence

I had the misfortune of having to commute home from downtown Albany to Rotterdam on Thursday afternoon during our first real snowstorm of the season. Circumstances forced me to travel locally which turned a normal 30-40 minute ride into a one and one half hour, bumper to bumper, 5 mph crawl.

It was definitely snowing at a rate that presented challenges for even the most seasoned road crews. I don’t recall having seen one plow in Albany and the roads reflected it. It wasn’t until I reached Guilderland that matters improved. It was a stark difference that demonstrated it was possible to keep the roads clear.

As I moved westward into Rotterdam, the roads were even better. I was completely stunned, even though I always admired the fine job Rotterdam seems to do on their highways when it snows. I figured it must be a fluke…that only the particular road I was on was in this good shape. I was wrong.

When I arrived home safely, I discovered my misfortune would continue because my daughter needed a ride to work. I’d have to drive throughout Rotterdam to get her there. I was amazed at how clean the roads were! It was a stellar job performed in adverse conditions by the Town of Rotterdam Highway Department.

When the plow visited my subdivision while I was shoveling out my home shortly afterwards, I witnessed first-hand the expertise and excellence of the Rotterdam Highway Department. The plow driver meticulously proceeded through the development, informing residents he saw that he’d soon be making another pass. This gave them the opportunity to keep their cars out of his path and provide for a much cleaner job. He even honked for some to give them the chance. This little extra effort required nothing but caring for the job he was doing and consideration for the residents. It did not impede or slow him down at all, and actually probably helped him to not to have to return to the neighborhood again.

I’d like to acknowledge the outstanding work of the Town of Rotterdam Highway Department for their superior efforts to provide safe roads. You should be proud because from what I experienced, you clearly outperformed many of our neighboring communities. Keep up the great work!
