The Golub Corp. plans to construct an 89,000-square-foot warehouse for perishables at its complex off Duanesburg Road. The additional warehouse space will eventually be used to house the supermarket chain’s organic food line. “The reason for this expansion is that Price Chopper is beginning a new organic food line,” explained project manager Barbara Beall of the Chazen Cos. Rotterdam planning officials reviewed site plans for a remodeling and expansion of Price Chopper’s distribution center Tuesday. In March, Price Chopper announced that it had doubled its storewide selection of natural and organic items, bringing the category’s total to 3,000 per store and aligning the chain with other supermarkets. At its 115 stores in six states, the company now boasts bright yellow and green signs highlighting organic and natural items in each department. The company is also planning an expanded recycling operation. Beall said Golub officials are anticipating the eventual passage of an expanded state bottle bill, which they feel will nearly triple the volume of recyclables now passing through the facility. An existing truck maintenance facility would be demolished under the plans, making way for a new 30,000-square-foot facility and 15,000-gallon fuel storage tank, according to plans submitted to the town. Another area to the north of the property would be converted into 210 trailer spaces. Beall said the project is planned for areas of the property already paved or disturbed and wouldn’t have any impact on wetland areas. Golub officials contacted before and after Tuesday’s meeting declined to discuss the project. Price Chopper’s most aggressive expansion in the past decade occurred nearly seven years ago, when parent company Golub Corp. broke ground on a 195,000-squarefoot addition — 125,000 square feet of dry goods storage and another 70,000 for fresh foods — to its main distribution center. The construction was part of an $18 million project, which represented the largest expansion in the chain’s 68-year history. More recently, the company completed a $16 million, 160,000-square-foot frozen food distribution center at the adjacent Rotterdam Industrial Park in 2005. The new center allowed Price Chopper to centralize its operations in Rotterdam in anticipation of future growth.

Price Chopper / Golub Corporation is exhibiting the traits of a good corporate neighbor. They are responsibly expanding their operations and presence in the community while being sensitive to the issue of environmental conservation (i.e., protecting the wetlands). As stated by others, the implementation of their plans will generate needed tax revenues and employment opportunities for Schenectady County. All this is being done without the lure of public money being awarded in the form of government grants?? This attests to the success of private industry as exemplified by Golub Corporation!
