The state and local governments should review the money that is budgeted for road repairs / improvements and redirect the funds from unnecessary projects (e.g., the rotaries planned at Latham Circle) to the inspection and repair of bridges and railways. Our transit systems must be maintained as they are critical for commerce.
Tax relief must come from identifying and eliminating fraud in our entitlement programs (e.g. Welfare, Medicare/Medicaid, etc.). Reduction of employment in the public sector must be achieved by reducing overhead, eliminating redundancy, and implementing automation to increase efficiency. Downsizing (a private industry term) should be achieved through natural attrition as employees retire or resign.
Z - you are a genious!! You couldn't have said it any better. But how the heck do you get the politicians to implement these ideas? People have been saying this for decades. There is a new generation taking the helm who were also a part of this ideal thinking. So....what happened? They join the ranks of politics and the ideal gets lost. It is truly a vicious circle!
I swear that politics is a contagioius deadly disease!!!! Is there a pill for it, please?

Pork comes before N.Y.’s infrastructure EDMOND DAY Rotterdam
While on holiday in New Jersey, a thought came to me. Why does the state of New Jersey have well-managed highways and bridges that seem to be in good condition? New York does not! The answer is, Albany and pork. In New Jersey, a state sometimes viewed as the back lot for the Sopranos or Godfather, manages to have flyover on their primary highway. Flyover facilitates traffi c flow and is something much needed at Exit 24 on the New York State Thruway. Highway engineers in New York are preoccupied with inspecting bridges not properly funded. Pork is available on a yearly basis to buy votes for incumbents, but money does not exist to implement flyover in an expeditious manner. Why? While I am on the topic of highways. Why does the Thruway Authority exist? The answer is, to provide jobs for patronage folk. Get rid of the Authority, improve the roads and, Albany, please get out of the way of commerce in New York state. Surplus monies, if they exist, should go toward infrastructure, not Little Leagues, volunteer firehouses and statues for pigeons to sit on. New York is drowning in governmental incompetence. Ditto the federal system.
