There was no input from the county manager. The vote was unanimously in step and positive on the part of all Democrats. The four Republicans, perhaps intimidated, all abstained. This meeting of the county Legislature was certainly a curious model of “democracy” in action.

Anybody have any idea why the four Republicans all abstained? (If that is even accurate)

I believe that is incorrect. I know they voted "NAY." His memory is faulty.

The Recovery Room is basing their model on being near by medical facilities.  If the nursing home ISN'T built on Curry, the Recovery Room won't survive, based on their business model.

This is an old political trick. The DEMS are being slammed for the way they totally mishandled the County Home. They first secured $50 million in bonding and now seek to locate it. But no one wants it. Instead of listening to the taxpayers they try to link the minority REPS to their debacle.

The REPS all voted against this waste of taxpayer funds. Instead of blaming others SS Savage better rethink the long term damage she is causing. She should go back to Dr Gordon's original plan to use St Claire's as a centrally located County Home which is close to Ellis Hospital.

Operating costs at Glendale are deeply and adversely impacted by county-union labor contracts, in terms of generous salaries, seniority agreements as well as greater than average benefits, including insurance, pensions, sick time, personal time and, finally, recognition of many minor holidays.

There are many doctors that do take issue with the benefits vs care at the glendale home.
Too many benefits/high cost...........not enough quality care.
Basically, the elderly nor the taxpayers are not getting their monies worth.

It should be sold and privatized.

There are a lot of people in Rotterdam and surrounding communities who will support the Recovery Room.
They don't need a medical facility nearby to succeed.  If the county nursing home is built in Rotterdam, it
would just add to the already significant customer base.

They will support the Recovery Room and close several other family owned tappies. Many are just hanging on with State Tax on their necks. It's disgusting that Rotterdam Industrial Development funds (that should have been used on the Industrial Park} were flushed on this. Another mutual back scratch under the guise of "working together".

As far as the County Home-stop the nonsense. We no longer afford to stay in the nursing home business. Privatize it like Montgomery County has already successfully done. They still have a safety net. SS Savage will cost County taxpayers over a $100 million if she is not thrown out as County leader and this plan quashed. Take another look at her pathetic election results. The bonds should never have been authorized and should not be issued.

The Recovery Room will do well .. because it serves great food.   The other places will do well .. if they offer
great food, too.    Anything that gets people to come to Rotterdam or stay in Rotterdam and spend their
money .. makes good business sense.

The glendale home, no matter where it lands, will take away from the tax base.

It should be privatized with county oversight!

I like the way the McDonald's was remodeled  .. and yes .. their McRib sandwich is good.   Next stop is to
visit the new Paesan's Pizza  .. and early next year ... to celebrate the new Recovery Room in Rotterdam.

Editorial: Fulton County shows the way on nursing home
Monday, November 29, 2010

While the Schenectady County Legislature has committed to building a brand-new nursing home, requiring an ever-higher subsidy from county taxpayers, the Fulton County Board of Supervisors last week voted to sell its nursing home to a private operator. In doing so, the board resisted pressure from the union, whose president, Ron Briggs, was unusually candid in giving the reasons why the union wants the county to keep the home public — and why the county cannot afford to.
The Bronx-based company that would take over Fulton County’s nursing home after a sale operates others around the state, some with unions and some without. But Briggs said it doesn’t matter even if there is a union, because private-sector unions’ protections and benefits can’t compare with public-sector unions’. Public employees’ pensions are better, health benefits better and salaries usually better, Briggs noted. And he correctly cited the reason: the Taylor and its Triborough Amendment, which leaves public employee union contracts in place after expiration and until new deals are agreed to by both sides.
Other counties in the state are also considering getting out of the nursing home business, including Albany. County Executive Michael Breslin has proposed closing Ann Lee Home and providing long-term care to the elderly in their homes, or assisted living facilities or private nursing homes...................>>>>...............>>>>.................http://www.dailygazette.com/news/2010/nov/29/1129_edit1/

Bravo to the Fulton County Supervisors! They stood up to pressure by unions? What a difference from our moronic Schenectady County Legislature. We need some leaders like Ron Briggs-instead we have the horrible SS Savage. The Gazetto has finally had enough of the DEMS and "working together" nonsense.

This underlines two important issues. Schenectady County needs to get back to a Board of Supervisors. Without paid political dummies we would save over a million dollars in salaries, pensions, and health care costs. The City needs 6 "legislators"? None of whom fight to increase sales tax revenue for the City which has been stuck at $11 million for 10 years.  How anyone for the Hilltowns can support this current system is beyond me. Returning to a Board of Supervisors also means the end of the failed Metrograft experiment. A total disaster at job creation, increasing County sales tax revenue, or stabilizing property values. But they are doing a great job of increasing their operating expenses.
