I can't rationalize this logic any longer. Let's overtax the entire county so that we can have one of the only county-run nursing homes in the area? It's not free, it still cost thousands of dollars every month for each of the residents so who exactly is receiving the benefit?

We have seen the garbage which has come to our area from the free-flowing welfare the County has to offer. The nursing home is in the same boat. There are people that need Glendale as it is close to their families in the area, but government should not be in charge of healthcare or welfare. The County does not have the sense or expertise to run a nursing home and it will eventually succumb to their incompetence.

Even Albany county is proposing selling their county nursing home!

who the frig cares that Atlas shrugged ???

anyway ...  Karen Johnson is right on the mark in her comments  ... we need a nursing home IN the county

If the county is looking to build it in Rotterdam --- I think that would be even better.

Look who wants another public funded parasitic organization to suck more of the life out of the county thru higher taxes. Privatize the nursing home and put it back on the tax roles. With all the high taxes the residents of NYS pay it is no wonder people are starting to refer to it as the VAMPIRE STATE.

If I am asked to vote for or against a county nursing home ... I would vote for it.

Why don't we build a nursing home in each town then! So what if our taxes go up six fold? We can also build a county hospital (we had one once) and that way we will all be close by the hospital when we hurt ourselves. I don't care if my property taxes go from 4 grand to 20 grand. I will be safer and it will be better (plus the unions will be taken care of and they can get the democrap vote out.)

"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."

look at all the senior housing going up......why do you think that is?......the plan is to move away from institutions.....will there be some folks who can
'unload' their 'burden' with $$ of course, there always will be......leveling the burden field is not the job of the government......we reap what we sow....

Many questions on Schenectady County’s new nursing home

Did you know $50 million was approved in a bond to build a new Schenectady County nursing home to replace the antiquated Glendale Nursing Home?
A land survey was done on the 39-acre site currently housing Glendale Home. Who did the survey? There is adequate space surrounding the nursing home to build a new one, keeping the remainder of the property forever wild for county residents to enjoy. To date, no architectural and engineering plans have been made available to the public.
To date, there has been no disclosure to the public or our representatives by Schenectady County Legislature Chairwoman Susan Savage.
We need to have an informational meeting chaired by Ms. Savage to address the status of the Glendale Home site — where our taxpayer dollars are going. Why was the entire 39 acres of the Glendale Home site surveyed? When will engineering and architectural plans be forthcoming, and what firm will be hired? Will the project be put out to bid?
Why was this information not forthcoming before the elections?

Now that SS Savage got crushed and humiliated at the polls-here comes the County Nursing Home. Forget about Glenville, which is a REP hotbed.

It's coming to Rotterdam where they actual want prime commercial land permanent off the tax rolls. They welcome this as part of the "working together" new County order. Not one peep so far from the many DEMS in Town Hall.

County committed to new nursing home without reason, debate

I am writing in response to Lila Morelli’s excellent Nov. 2 letter to the editor, regarding building a new Glendale Home. I also questioned the need to fund and build a new facility at a time when the county was dipping into its reserves to hold the tax rate down.
I took the trouble to attend and address the county Legislature on the evening the bond issue was voted and approved in summer of 2009. First, it was not approved at $50 million, but at $58 million, including debt service or interest. Many people spoke for 18-20 minutes each in favor, although the limit was 11 minutes. Perhaps a majority represented labor unions, and elderly home occupants were transported by bus to be present for visual effect or emotional appeal. I alone, who spoke last (although signed in as third), was cautioned not to exceed 11 minutes.
I pointed out that presently, the Glendale operation requires a yearly subsidy estimated to exceed $8 million. Many counties have closed their nursing home facilities for significant economic savings using non-county-supported nursing homes, with care of equal or better quality. At least three upstate counties, including Albany, Ulster and Columbia, have executives who are studying closure. Michael Breslin, highly respected executive of Albany County, is a staunch advocate of not rebuilding the Ann Lee home. His reasons can be found in Gazette articles of the past three months.
Allegations that non-government homes decline to accept Alzheimer’s and Medicaid patients are not true. The [Glen] Eddy in Cohoes handles these patients with a humane, dedicated facility, which I have visited and hold in high regard.
Operating costs at Glendale are deeply and adversely impacted by county-union labor contracts, in terms of generous salaries, seniority agreements as well as greater than average benefi ts, including insurance, pensions, sick time, personal time and, finally, recognition of many minor holidays.
Lastly, I was present when the bond was approved with no public discussion among the legislators. There was no input from the county manager. The vote was unanimously in step and positive on the part of all Democrats. The four Republicans, perhaps intimidated, all abstained.
This meeting of the county Legislature was certainly a curious model of “democracy” in action.

Anybody have any idea why the four Republicans all abstained? (If that is even accurate)

Four REPS? Has ANG switched back already? Last we looked the REPS were down to 2.

The real outrage is that our County Manger has nothing to say. A $50 Million bond, for a nursing home SS Savage can't even site and the County Manger has no comment whatsoever. Huh? But she is popular in Duanesburg. You can't make this stuff up.

Montgomery County is totally out of the public nursing home business. Albany County can't afford it and is looking a home based options. Meanwhile back in Savageville the idiots on our County Legislators refuse to listen and want to build at any price on Curry Rd. It's all about the patronage never the taxpayers.
