working together works if you belong to a hippy commune and share the same pair of underwear and dirty dishes......I believe in community but community has to exist with INCOME.....TAXES.....and that means business with a foundation that the COMMUNITY invested in...ie:sewers,sidewalks etc.....

.....there is nothing wrong with the care of family members[quote]
OK, when you have quit your job, used up all of mom and dad's money, mom and/or dad are still with you, the money is gone, you have no income, tell me how do you pay your mortgage? How do you pay your child's college tuition? How do you pay for health insurance for yourself?
Tell me how can a 65 year old adult child do wound care for 90 year old parent. I think of my sister for example, if she were the only one. She took secretarial so she didn't even take biology in high school.
What happens when a couple doesn't have children? Do you expect the 85 yr old wife to care for her bed ridden 90 yr old husband?
But again, I'm really looking for you to tell us what happens when you give up your job, mom and dad move in with your and you live off their savings. What happens when there money is gone.....HOW DO YOU PAY YOUR MORTGAGE?????
Optimists close their eyes and pretend problems are non existent. Better to have open eyes, see the truths, acknowledge the negatives, and speak up for the people rather than the politicos and their rich cronies.
I agree on ALL counts about nursing homes. It boils down to.....it is personal!!! There are many reasons on why and who should be in a nursing home. There are a gazillion reasons.
As far as the county nursing home....First.....with or without it, people in the area are STILL being sent to nursing homes out of the area due to lack of available rooms. Second....rotterdam does not need a non taxed entity which would not help the tax base. Third, private nursing homes have beds mandated by the state for medicaid patients. Forth.......the nursing home is costing schenectady county abundle due to the fact that it is UNION!!! IMHO

Plan ahead......and I'm not pointing fingers here, honestly......I'm just saying that there is a whole generation that planned on having other folks do it for them and thereby over leveraging themselves......we refuse to see what we become and refuse to plan....we have let the politicos talk about fear mongering podium pucks and have not dealt with the guts of the issue.....sure it's fun and nice to have marble countertops, 2,3 or 4 cars(because we cant slow down)....but things DO CHANGE when we age...and there is a teaching that is lacking.....and it doesn't have to be legislated, it is our responsibility.....not the government's...... you know the story about the ant and grasshopper.....as for your example about your sister it really CAN be learned...it's not emergency care...it's palliative......and the touch of a loved one no matter how 'imperfect' it is does more for the thriving of the will of a human being......medicine is medicine and care is care....just like health insurance and health care are different.......JMHO....
it will be OK......easy----nah,I cant promise that----NOTHING is easy, except maybe brushing our teeth....

Why not build new nursing home at site of the old one?
There is no question that the antiquated Schenectady County nursing home needs to be replaced. The question is: Where should it be built? The answer is: Right where it is now! A total of 139.4 acres are owned by Schenectady County at this site. The majority of open space would still be available behind the new facility for wildlife and recreation. Plus, 108 acres of the county’s Indian Kill Preserve abuts this property! Consider our residents who are in need of full-time care and the hard-working, dedicated personnel who serve in our community. Placing our loved ones in a nursing home when we are unable to meet their needs is difficult enough. Knowing they are being well-cared for makes this transition a little easier. Being in a pleasant environment makes it even better. Engineering and architectural concerns can be accommodated at the existing nursing home site. Is there a possibility that someone is interested in purchasing this parcel of land for development?
Another County employee heard from. It's not about care-it's about County employment. The grease machine must continue-where will we put put your unemployable kid? Rotterdam is in SS Savage's sights. Glenville residents said a loud "NO WAY!"
There are better options than a new nursing home in Sch’dy
As the debate continues regarding how to balance caring for the county’s older adults and conserving the natural areas of the county, I would like to call attention to the options for older adults to be cared for in their homes, as opposed to a nursing home. There is a recent trend toward “aging in place,” which enables people to remain in the community as they grow older; money that would be used to build a new nursing home could be directed to programs that Schenectady already has in place to care for seniors at home. For example, the Expanded Homes Services for the Elderly Program provides non-medical services in the home for seniors not eligible for Medicaid, such as housework, respite care, case management and personal emergency response units. Adult day services, which provide transportation, recreation, socialization and nutritional programs, are also available. For Medicaid-eligible seniors, the county offers home care services, including the Consumer Directed Personal Assistance Program, which enables individuals to hire, train and supervise their own personal care assistant. There are also the Long Term Home Health Care (also known as “nursing home without walls”) and Comprehensive Care Management programs, both of which are options for older adults who are considered eligible for nursing home placement. Rather than spend millions of dollars to build a new nursing home facility, why can’t these funds be funneled to the already-existing programs that enable seniors to remain in the community? Most people do not want to move into a facility; they would prefer to live out their years at home. By expanding and enhancing home and community-based services, the county cannot only provide care for our seniors in their preferred setting, but also save money in the long run.

County needs nursing home to complement other senior options
Re the Oct. 5 letter, “There are better options than a new nursing home in Schenectady”: The author advocated community services instead of building a new Glendale Home. But as the author is aware, Schenectady County does provide the many in-home services and has worked for years with a long-term care consortium for planning and service delivery. We all want ourselves and family members to remain at home as independently as possible; however, there are situations where delivery of services in the home may not be safe or medically adequate, and may not provide for optimal quality of life. These situations require a skilled nursing home. Schenectady County provides this level of care, particularly for those without the means, at Glendale Nursing Home. The county also provides in-home service options. Schenectady County Senior and Long Term Care Services handles 22,000 calls for information, referral and assistance each year; assists more than 1,000 individuals with in-home health or personal support services; provides subsidized in-home or personal care support services every day to 700 individuals; and provides homedelivered and [group] meals and transportation services to 1,500 individuals, enabling them to remain in their own home. Schenectady County is also the only county in our area that offers the nationally recognized PACE [Program of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly] program as an alternative to nursing home care. Yet Schenectady County also still needs the Glendale Home. More than 400 nursing home beds have already been closed in the county. Due to this decrease in available beds, hospitals have had to place patients more than 50 miles away — too far for easy visits — isolating the patient. Glendale also services residents that may not be attractive to other facilities and works directly with Ellis Medicine to take complex cases that other facilities will not — particularly those with behavioral issues such as dementia. As our senior population continues to grow, we will continue to work with the private sector to develop, expand and support additional options, particularly in the subsidized assisted living, support housing and in-home service options. But we will also continue to fight for the right of all people to have access to quality nursing care in their own community, regardless of their means to pay. That is why we also need Glendale Home, so that people who have lived and worked in our community their whole lives will continue to have options when they need nursing home care and will be able to stay close to their families instead of being sent to faraway counties or neighboring states.
