How about YOU admit you are mistaken or provide support for your statements that are other than "it's been reported by....." So let me explain something....I am employed and directly involved in the transport refrigeration business, so knowledge in this area is important to our success. Growers WILL NOT prematurely pick product, store it then gas it before trasnporting it. Local growers "may" prematurely pick in order not to have product prematurely ripen becuase they transport their produce in non-refrigeraed vehicles, usually for short distances. A grower in CALIF sending product to NY, simply cannot pick green product, store it, gas it and ship. The purpose of refrigerated transport is to delay the ripening process that natureally occurs with the release of ethylene gas. We support the largest refrigerated transport providers in the US, and I have personally seen produce leave the grower, directly into the warehouse and then onto transport vehicles within 24 hr periods to be sure to send product that is not ripened too quickly. Growers want to move their product as quickly as possible after picked...it's to their benefit and the only way to get product to market that buyers wil laccept.
Sorry that you may have read some information and then generalized it as you have, but you are mistaken in your comments!
It has been reported on major networks -- and in other sources -- and quite clearly it was stated in the reports (and they did interview large commercial growers in Florida and California) .. the tomatoes are pickedgreen -- put in storage -- and then "gassed" to turn red just before being shipped out across the country.
I am NOT mistaken in my comments -- and I will stand by my decision to support LOCAL GROWERS and to purchase my produce direct from the farmers or at small retailers like Greulich's and Gabriel's IN SEASON.
You can eat the Franken-fruit if you want ---- My family and I will eat produce that was raised naturally and tastes the way God intended it to taste.

The following is quoted from documents prepared by "ETHYLENE CONTROL"
University researchers findings imply that there is no 'safe' level of ethylene that does not cause a deleterious effect on postharvest life . If 5 PPB is assumed to be the lowest possible ethylene concentration that can be achieved in a postharvest situation, then holding any non-climacteric fruit and vegetable in 5 PPB ethylene will generate 100% of its possible postharvest life. The percentage loss in postharvest life at any higher ethylene concentration can then be calculated from the regression equations. The percentage loss in postharvest life at 20°C for the 7 non-climacteric produce examined in wills et al. (1999) ranged from 25 to 46% postharvest life was lost.
Conclusions: Although produce may only spend a small proportion of their postharvest life in each marketing situation, the effects of elevated ethylene levels are cumulative. The end result successive levels of moderate ethylene levels throughout marketing can be a very short life in the hands of the consumer.
The industry should be seeking to minimize the impact of ethylene on produce at all stages of the marketing chain. The extended market life that would arise from a reduction in ethylene level during marketing can lead to consumers having greater confidence in the purchase of fruit and vegetables with a resultant increase in sales volume and/ or price.

#1 - I don't know who you are .. so your claims of being some kind of expert are meaningless to me.
#2 - I have heard the report on several major news networks and from other sources ..which I believe are much more reliable than some "no name/no face person who posts on this website"
#3 - I have no intentions of ever purchasing the "frankenfruit" that Price Chopper, Hannaford or any of the big chain supermarkets sell .... I will continue to purchase from the local farmers/producers IN SEASON and from small markets like Gabriel's and Greulich's -- this is not only a free country but a capitalist one as well ... and my family and I are free to make our decisions about the food that we purchase for our consumption.

I wrote a response to once again attempt to provide rational feedback, but on second thought I deleted it becuase it was a useless attempt considering who the intended audience is! You are without a doubt the most arrogant ill infomed wannabe I have ever encountered. You refuse to listen to factual statements. You fabricate crap, post it and can't/don't substnatiate it when called on it. You believe in your own feeble mind that you are some sort of political insider but don't have the common sense or mentality to be able to represent the people of even a 3rd world country......I give up trying to get through that thick immature simplistic skull of yours! Go ahead and continue to live in your dillusional world....it's obvious that's what drives your stellar career and standing in life!

Even the democraps just put up with him because they every so often, need a useful idiot to carry their water, or be a sacrificial lamb when they can't win a race.

Decided I still need to reply to this crap because accusing me of lying is an insult I can't ignore... #1 - Calling me a liar because I can prove things you can't is stupid. I would have to be an idiot to make these kind of claims because there are people on this forum who do know me. You do it because you are an idiot and lashing back at people is the only way you can deflect your stupidity. #2 - I am a no-name to you but not to others. You want proof of who I am and what I do, I'll be glad to do it. You send me a PM with all your verifiable personal contact information and in return I will give you mine with my work information that you can verify. I will give my HR dept your iformation and permission to verify to you my employment and position within the company. Also, I come to Rotterdam every other weekend and will gladly provide a personal appearance if you want me to prove to you whatever it is you need....because accusing me of being a liar and fabricating my skill is a total insult. I am proud of my accomplishments at work and in life, and to have you call me a liar has me pi$$ed off. Only a total loser like you who has absolutely no credibility and achieved nothing in life would have the "cyber-space balls" to hide behind and make such accusations.

Not to mention that rotterdam is the home of not only a 'produce' warehouse, but is also the home of Railex that actually transports produce!!! I'm sure that both of these businesses have a few rotterdamians working for them so this information should be easily attainable for the FACTS!!!
ahhhh....dvr....the voice of the liberal progressive socialists!!

Green: Most commercial tomatoes (except greenhouse tomatoes, which are allowed to fully ripen on the vine and marketed as "vine ripened") are picked at the "mature green" stage and either allowed to ripen during shipping or gassed with ethylene gas to promote rapid ripening. Tomatoes picked at this stage haven't had time to develop all the complex flavors yet, and gassing them only shortcuts the slow, complex ripening process. Ick.
this is just one of many online references by EXPERTS that back up my statement that commercial growers DO PICK THE TOMATOES GREEN ... and DO GAS THEM WITH ETHYLENE TO TURN THEM RED
..so JoeBonehead does NOT know what he is talking about
