CAPITOL N.Y. takes step on slavery apology Newsday
ALBANY — New York took a step Wednesday toward becoming the first Northern state to apologize for slavery during its early years. The Assembly unanimously adopted a bill “acknowledging the tragedy of slavery” from the 1620s until statewide emancipation in 1827. It also expressed regret for the role played by New Yorkers in the slave trade, bringing thousands of Africans here against their will. The bill was expected to pass the Senate, though a vote could come later this year because the Legislature is set to adjourn its regular session today. The measure, sponsored by Assemblyman Keith Wright, D-Harlem, and Sen. Dale Volker, gained traction after formal apologies were issued earlier this year by Alabama, Maryland, North Carolina and Virginia. “New York was the second most active importer of African slaves in the United States of America,” said Wright, who is black. “A lot of folks don’t even think that slavery occurred here. . . . they think it’s something that’s just indigenous to below the Mason-Dixon line,” he added, referring to the South. The bill doesn’t seek reparations for the descendants of slaves. Separate legislation from Assemblyman Hakeem Jeffries would establish a commission to study what’s owed — but it stands little chance of passing.
Then we will have to apologize for the deportation of thousands of "illegal" immigrants AND the "allowance" (turn our heads) of companies to employ them......it all amounts to the same thing.....cheap labor-cheap goods-'other folks' do the dirty work etc etc......and the merry-go-round continues.......

Another feel-good policy. That is until someone realizes that this is now proof from the state that they were responsible for the slavery (why else would you apologize), and therefore they are now open for lawsuits on liability for it.
As someone keeps saying in here, they'll be chanting "Show me the Money!"
I never owned a slave, never knew anyone who did and never sold a slave. I don't know anything about it nor did I live in the time it happened.I wasn't a part of it. That was hundreds of years before my time. It clearly shouldn't have happend...but it did.... SO NO PERSONAL APOLOGY FROM ME!!

This country is beginning to be just one big plantation of slaves, and the government are the slave owners. DO I HEAR AN APOLOGY?

There are just so many ways to invent the wheel. You would think that with all of the thousands of years of past history, we, as a society would have come farther. We are no different or better off than in the Roman/Greek Empires. Greed, lust and power is still alive and well in 2007!!
And anyways, we are all slaves to something....I want an apology from Bill Gates...He's a slave owner to millions of us on this WORLD WIDE WEB!
