And yet again, Somebody, you are mixing apples and oranges, which you brilliantly do!!

Supporting your child and supporting a tax paid program are two different things. Really! And Al Gore should not be applauded for his slimy political answer. Do you honestly think that when he made that statement he was really thinking of his daughter? Of course not! He was just giving his slimy political stance!

Guess gore got off the pro-choice boat and hopped on the global warming one. Pro-choice would piss off too many people and at least global warming is REAL feel good legislation! Seems gore is your mentor, Somebody!

Comparing gore to Solomon is ludicrous at best!

I partially agree - but what about TALENT  and VIRTUE - ability   ?  oportunity is secondary  -   but that  is another topic really-

They decide how they want to use the abilities (this would be the talent) and/or situations that they are put in (this would be what virtue is built on.  Without being in situations, there would be no virtues.).

I dont think so-   A decision with firm RESOLUTION  becomes a virtue ( Benjamin Franklin made a nice list- there are 12 more  )

Talent  seperates us- there is a natural hirearchy - found in Athletics- Arts- and intellegence - Hierearchies are natural and essential-

Of all abortions, ‘partialbirth’ are the worst kind

In response to John Vohr’s June 28 letter, I must comment on his reply to another reader, Pam Dussault [June 20 Gazette]: We all agree that murder is wrong and the killing of Dr. Tiller by a deranged man was intolerable and justice will be served.
Mr. Vohr should educate himself on the details of abortion. President Obama has vowed to reinstitute partial birth abortion, where a woman can abort her baby up until the day of its birth. It’s hard for me to fathom that in our country, this is how we treat an unborn child.
Please Google “partial birth abortion.” It is barbaric. Let’s face it — murder is murder, whether it’s an adult or a baby.

Fetuses found to have memories
By Jennifer Harper (Contact) | Thursday, July 16, 2009

They weigh less than 3 pounds, usually, and are perhaps 15 inches long. But they can remember.

The unborn have memories, according to medical researchers who used sound and vibration stimulation, combined with sonography, to reveal that the human fetus displays short-term memory from at least 30 weeks gestation - or about two months before they are born.

"In addition, results indicated that 34-week-old fetuses are able to store information and retrieve it four weeks later," said the research, which was released Wednesday.

Scientists from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Maastricht University Medical Centre and the University Medical Centre St. Radboud, both in the Netherlands, based their findings on a study of 100 healthy pregnant women and their fetuses with the help of some gentle but precise sensory stimulation.

On five occasions during the last eight weeks of their pregnancies, the women received a series of one-second buzzes on their bellies with a "fetal vibroacoustic stimulator," a hand-held diagnostic device used to gauge an unborn baby's heart rate and general well-being.

The baby's responses - primarily eye, mouth and body movements - were closely monitored over the weeks with ultrasound imaging to gauge "fetal learning" patterns. The researchers found that the babies acclimated themselves to the sounds and vibrations to the point that they no longer bothered to respond - a process known as "habituation."

"The stimulus is then accepted as 'safe' " by the babies, the study said.

The team also found that the tiny test subjects actually improved these skills as they grew older, with those who were 34- or 36-weeks old clearly showing that they had become familiar with the hum outside the womb.

"The fetus 'remembers' the stimulus and the number of stimuli needed for the fetus to habituate is then much smaller," the study said.

"It seems like every day we find out marvelous new things about the development of unborn children. We hope that this latest information helps people realize more clearly that the unborn are members of the human family with amazing capabilities and capacities like these built in from the moment of conception," said Randall K. O'Bannon, director of education and research for the National Right to Life Educational Trust Fund.

A call to NARAL Pro-Choice America for comment on the implications of the research were not returned.

The Dutch medical team, meanwhile, said its findings could help obstetricians track the healthy development of unborn babies during pregnancy. The research was published in Child Development, a medical journal.

Scientists have been curious about fetal responses to sound for decades.

The first real study of "habituation" occurred in 1925 when researchers discovered that fetuses moved less when exposed to a beeping car horn. Since then, door buzzers and even electric toothbrushes have been used to help researchers understand the fetal environment - and the response of the unborn to such influences.

Beeps and buzzes were not always the tools of choice.

In 2003, psychologists and obstetricians at Queen's University in Canada found a profound mother-baby link. In a study of 60 pregnant women, they found that the unborn babies preferred the voices of their own mothers - both before and after birth.

The heart rates of fetuses sped up when they heard their mother reading a poem, and slowed down when they heard a stranger's voice - evidence of "sustained attention, memory and learning by the fetus," said Barbara Kisilevsky, a professor of nursing who led the research.

The Queen's group has also investigated fetal response to the father's voice, concluding that if men try a little pre-natal vocalizing to their offspring, the newborn will later recognize the father's voice

It is apparent that this information will not be HEADLINES in all media outlets. If they ever REALLY elaborated on this information, there would be hundreds, thousands and perhaps millions of women on a psychiatrist's couch trying to deal with the lie they were told when they made that choice to have their abortion.

I think I'm sick to my stomach now!

I am not sure of the 'cosmic' consequences of abortion are as stated (by Ivan) but then it could be.  I do think the cosmic consequences of irresponsible men/women, rapist, icestorciders, etc. is not fully understood.   Nor fully chastised.  On ALL other points I am in 100% agreement with Ivan, especially about dying WHOLE.  My Polish grandmother who could not read or write, came from a family (one branch) with a history of Alzheimer dementia wanted to die with her  'sense' intact.  She got her wish.

Ed! In my family (UK), we took care of my grandmother Hills after grandfather Hills died in 1935. My Aunt Edie took care of both our Grandparents Barden and my mother helped during their remaining years. My father died at home. Mother then moved close to her sister in Kent, lived alone for ten years but surrounded by family and friends. She declined to live with my brother, although not for any negative reasons. So we found a pleasant retirement home for her. After two years we moved her to a nursing home close to my brother, who was at sea. She died peacefully with my sister-in-law holding her hand, aged 93. I saw her a few weeks before: She was anxious to go. During the ten years alone she visited us in the USA thrice for a total time of nearly two years. We brought her, and her youngest sister (my beloved Aunt Ellen), to Maine for two weeks. They had a marvelous time and thought Maine folk were among the best. The important thing is to die "all at once". Modern medicine tends to do the opposite. I use no pharmaceuticals. One needs to die consciously in order to keep memory. The real ordeal is rebirth . . . and hanging on to memory. That is why abortion is a sin against the creation. I figure types like Hitler were aborted, maybe more than once. Abortion produces monsters eventually. They find their place naturally with . . . shall we say . . . the anti-Christ.

If women had the luxury today of staying home, and the man's income was enough to feed, clothe, educate and provide medical benefits and retirement benefits for the family, perhaps there wouldn't be a need for nursing homes. IMO

Today, dying at home means hospice, a hospital bed, a commode, a wheel chair, oxygen tank and morphine.

'Back in the day'....you were born at home and that is where you died.

So what does it matter what you need to die at home.  If that is your wish and your family is able to keep their loved one in the home than dying at home can be a blessing.  Nursing homes are definitely needed because not everyone can afford or feels capable to be caregiver and skilled help is necessary.  Having hospice is another blessing for the patient and the family.  Being able to have someone help you make that transition to the next life and having someone with the family to help as their family member dies is a blessing.

Not sure what Mr. Day is intimating about his family member who wanted to die with their "sense" in tact when they were dying from Alzheimers.  She got her wish???  Does that mean she died earlier than expected f rom some other cause or was euthanized?

he was referring to the 'lack' of meds,,,,,ie:morphine/ativan etc....that can confuse and dull a person's
senses.....it's mostly used for the other family members subjective view of discomfort.....

Yes it is used (not in ALL cases) for the family's comfort. I have seen it used by hospice on terminal people who 'just couldn't sleep' at night. The family calls them and complains, and here comes the drugs. No pain. No discomfort. Just can't sleep!

Again....I'm not talking about people dying who are in unbearable pain. I DO believe and am greatfull for pain management.
