CAPITAL REGION Road work planned in area Thruway paving, county projects to slow driving BY MICHAEL LAMENDOLA Gazette Reporter Reach Gazette reporter Michael Lamendola at 395-3114 or lamend@dailygazette.com.
Construction projects on the Thruway and on county roads starting Sunday will close routes or reduce lanes for a week or more, officials announced. State Thruway officials said they will begin a $10 million paving project between Interchange 23 (Albany, I-787) and Interchange 26 (Rotterdam, I-890) Sunday afternoon. The work is expected to be completed June 29. Most of the work will occur at night, but the initial phase will include round-the-clock repairs through Friday, resulting in lane closures. Beginning at 5 p.m. Sunday, workers will close the westbound left lane of the Thruway from milepost 151.2 to 151.6 between Interchange 24 and Interchange 25 (Schenectady, I-890). The lane will reopen at 2 p.m. Monday but will then be closed again at 6 p.m.; it will reopen at 2 p.m. Tuesday. The state also plans to reduce lanes between Interchange 23 and Interchange 26 from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. June 25-29 to complete paving. Dynamic message signs will provide motorists with advance notice of the construction and required lane closures. Motorists may also listen to AM 1610 for updates. State police will enforce the 45 mph work zone speed limit during the construction period, officials said. Fines for speeding in work zones are double the usual fines. Schenectady County’s Department of Public Works will begin work on several roads in three towns, which will result in lane reductions, said county dispatcher Mike France. On Monday, the county will perform road construction along Consaul Road from Balltown Road in Niskayuna to the Albany County line and for a short distance in Albany County to Pearse Road. The county also plans to do work along Pearse Road north toward Route 7. This work is scheduled to be competed June 22. In Duanesburg, the county will work along 1000 Acre Road to Youngs Road, beginning Monday. In Glenville, the county will pave Tourreana Road from West Glenville Road to the Saratoga County line. This work is scheduled to begin Tuesday.
