Fired border officer alleges anti-Semitic abuse
Agency says guard engaged in unprofessional conduct toward public

    ALBANY — Final arguments are due Monday in the case of a former senior officer with U.S. Customs and Border Protection in Champlain who claims he endured years of anti-Semitic abuse.
    The agency said it fired Brian Israel for repeated unprofessional conduct toward members of the public. CPB said in 2005 and 2006, Israel roughed up, improperly arrested and verbally abused people.
    Israel — who was born in Canada and is a naturalized U.S. citizen and Navy veteran — argues that the charges are bogus and were drummed up by higher-ups at the northern New York border crossing in an attempt to get rid of him.
    “They fired me because of anti-Semitism and their own incompetence,” Israel said.
    Israel said during his 10 years at the Champlain crossing, he was repeatedly subjected to anti-Semitic incidents, which he said included other officers sticking Nazi swastikas and SS lightning bolts on his locker door.
    Other incidents, Israel said, included supervisors chiding him when buses carrying Jewish passengers approached the border with remarks including, “There’s the Jew cruiser, maybe you’ll get lucky and find yourself a bride,” and, “There’s the Hanukah Harry Bus; those are your people. You go clear that bus.”
    Israel said he complained about those incidents to his superiors.
    A spokesman for U.S. Customs and Border Protection said the agency could not comment on the case until after an administrative judge with the U.S. Merit Systems Protection Board makes a decision. In its filings with the board, the agency says the only formal discrimination claims it knows of are those Israel made after he was fired.
    The agency charged Israel with conduct unbecoming an officer, failure to follow supervisory instructions and lack of candor. It cites three incidents in its termination letter.
    The first was in May 2005. The agency says Israel yelled for a vehicle in an inspection lane to stop, and when he asked the driver why he didn’t stop, the driver threw up his hands and shrugged his shoulders as if he were confused or didn’t understand.
    Israel then ordered the driver out of the car, shoved the man against the car and twisted his arm behind his back, the agency said.
    The second was in July 2005, when an Algerian citizen crashed into a radiation monitor near the border crossing. Israel’s superiors say they ordered him to ride along in the ambulance and act as a translator because the man spoke only French and Israel was the only border guard who also spoke French.
    Instead, the agency says, Israel interfered with the ambulance crew, failed to contact his supervisor when he arrived at the hospital and told hospital staff that the man was “a terrorist and possibly a bomber” when there was no reason to believe he was.
    The third incident was in January 2006, when the agency says Israel hurled a string of profanities at a Canadian truck driver who had failed to notice a stop sign.
    Mark Conrad, a lawyer representing Israel in the matter, said except for his client’s use of some “salty language” with the trucker, the agency’s charges are unfounded.
    If Israel’s conduct was unprofessional, his superiors should have counseled him immediately, Conrad said. Instead, offi - cials allowed him to continue in his position for more than 18 months while they stacked charges against him to justify his removal, Conrad said.
    “All this stuff was orchestrated against him because he’s Jewish and doesn’t fi t in in upstate New York,” Conrad said.
    Israel is asking for his job back but wants to be transferred to another state. He also wants the agency to pay him back wages, compensatory damages and legal fees, Conrad said.

Official: Policy to stay same
No changes due on immigration enforcement

    SAN FRANCISCO — Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff says he feels the pain of employers pinched by intensifi ed efforts to control illegal immigration, but adds that until Congress enacts broad immigration reforms they shouldn’t expect any changes in enforcement.
    In an interview with The Associated Press, Chertoff said last week that the rising complaints from businesses offer some evidence the Bush administration’s approach is working.
    “This is harsh but accurate proof positive that, for the first time in decades, we’ve succeeded in changing the dynamic and [are] actually beginning to reduce illegal immigration,” Chertoff said. “Unfortunately, unless you counterbalance that with a robust system to allow people to come in temporarily and legally, you’re going to wind up with an economic problem.”
    Chertoff defended the actions of his agency, which oversees Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
    “We’re enforcing the law as it is, but Congress has not yet given us the authority to really expand the temporary worker program,” he said in the Tuesday interview. “If we could do that, then most of these businesses could find legal solutions.”
    Chertoff sharply criticized businesses that complain the crackdowns on their hiring of illegal immigrants will cost them money. In a federal court case last year, groups such as the U.S. Chamber of Commerce argued that the department had failed to account for the economic impact of new regulations on businesses.
    The argument “basically suggests we can’t enforce the law because it will prevent people from making money illegally,” Chertoff said. “The business community loves it [hiring illegal immigrants] because you have illegals, you pay them less, they have no place to go to complain.”
    Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa wrote Chertoff a letter last month asking federal officials to rethink their policy on workplace immigration crackdowns, saying they could have “severe and lasting effects on our local economy.”
    Villaraigosa accused federal officials of targeting “established, responsible employers” and said ICE should spend its limited resources targeting employers who exploit wage and hour laws.
    Asked about the mayor’s plea, Chertoff gave no indication that Villaraigosa would get the review and revision of ICE’s enforcement priorities he is seeking.
    “I would be delighted to see Congress give us a way to bring workers in legally,” Chertoff said. “Those workers would then be able to address the economic needs of the city and they would do it in a legal way. But as long as the law is as it is, I will enforce the law as it is.”
    Villaraigosa spokesman Matt Szabo said the mayor hopes to discuss the matter with Chertoff in person soon when he visits Washington.

Remember the fence Congress voted to build... the one that's supposed to help secure our border and make it more difficult for illegal aliens to come into the United States?

It appeared that our government was finally going to start building it.

In fact, Congress even authorized the Department of Homeland Security to waive any laws that might get in the way of this project, which is so vital to our national security.

At the beginning of this month -- after finally opening up its tool box and choosing its best saws and hammers -- Homeland Security announced its intention to use the power Congress gave the agency to waive provisions of a couple of those laws.

But hold your horses... not so fast!

With clenched teeth and flaring nostrils, 14 of the loudest left-wing Members of Congress just scuttled over to the U.S. Supreme Court, shouting that the building of the fence would violate the Clean Air Act and the Clean Drinking Water Act.  Vital species of flora and fauna would disappear.  The world would come to an end.

In other words, 14 left-wing Members of Congress -- after giving Homeland Security the authority to do something -- just ran kicking and screaming to the courts to stop the very thing that Congress authorized!

Are these 14 Members of Congress confused?  Hardly!

If legislative slight-of-hand doesn't work, try judicial tyranny.  Perhaps they think they can find five Justices who will twist the language of the Constitution and override the will of the people.  

It would not be first time!

But what is even more incredible is how these 14 Members of Congress suddenly morphed into greenies -- worried about the environment and a list of endangered species that would supposedly be placed in jeopardy by the building of the border fence.

John Conyers of Michigan said, "Our responsibility to be stewards of the earth cannot be thrown aside for the sake of an ill-conceived border fence."

One cannot help but wonder if Conyers felt that strongly about the environment BEFORE he saw it as a means to stop the border fence.

Then again, everyone knows that the species the 14 are really trying to protect is the Immigrantus Illegalis.

"The blanket waiver of laws like the Clean Air Act and the Safe Drinking Water Act is a clear and disturbing abuse of the secretary's discretion," intoned Congressman John D. Dingell.

Congressman Bennie G. Thompson -- forgetting perhaps, that Congress had itself approved the waivers -- harrumphed: "The American people entrust Congress to ensure that the laws of this land are faithfully executed not excused by the Executive Branch."

What about the "laws of the land" regarding immigration and border enforcement?

For once, however, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, kept the eyes of Americans focused on the true target:

"Criminal activity at the border does not stop for endless debate or protracted litigation.  Congress and the American public have been adamant that they want and expect border security. We're serious about delivering it, and these waivers will enable important security projects to keep moving forward."

The survival of the nation is more important than the survival of the Spotted Owl and Whooping Crane, though the two are by no means mutually exclusive.

Some Republicans Get Into The Act.

Meanwhile on the Republican side, Governor Rick Perry of Texas  is likewise trying to block the building of the fence, dismissing it as "a preposterous idea."

"The only thing a wall would possibly accomplish," he said, a smirk in his voice, "is to help the ladder business."

Speaking to the Dallas Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Perry actually expressed his opposition to legislation proposed in the Texas House that would deny the rights and benefits of Texas citizenship to illegal aliens.  Perry called such legislation "divisive."

Apparently he doesn't consider the flood of illegal aliens "divisive" -- glutted classrooms, hospitals teetering on the brink of bankruptcy, jails and prisons jammed with criminals who happen to be in the United States illegally.

Speaking of hospitals, after Perry's speech to the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, I wonder if he stopped off at Parkland Hospital, where President Kennedy died.  

            It's a different hospital today.

Approximately 16,000 babies are born there every year -- that's almost 44 every day.

And according to a 2006 survey, 70 PERCENT WHO GAVE BIRTH THE FIRST THREE MONTHS OF THAT YEAR WERE ILLEGAL ALIENS.

The total cost for delivering babies?  A WHOPPING $70.7 million!  

Medicaid (paid for by state and federal taxpayers) put up $34.5 million and Dallas County taxpayers kicked in $31.3 million.

Do you suppose Perry thinks that tax bite is divisive?

Do you suppose Governor Perry thinks about how "divisive" this spectacle might seem to American citizens?

Thousands rally for immigration reform
The Associated Press

    CHICAGO — Thousands of chanting, flag-waving immigrants and activists rallied in cities across the country Thursday, attempting to reinvigorate calls for immigration reform in a presidential election year in which the economy has taken center stage.
    From Washington to Miami to Los Angeles, immigrant rights activists demanded citizenship opportunities for the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants in the U.S. and an end to raids and deportations.
    “We come here to fight for legalization. We’re people. We have rights,” said Eric Molina, an undocumented factory worker who immigrated to Zion, Ill., from Mexico.
    Molina, his sister and his 13-yearold daughter Erika, a U.S. citizen, were among about 15,000 people who rallied in Chicago in one of the largest demonstrations of the day.
    Turnout has fallen sharply since the first nationwide rallies in 2006, when more than 1 million people — at least 400,000 in Chicago alone — clogged streets and brought downtown traffic to a standstill. Activists say this year’s efforts are focused less on protests and more on voter registration and setting an agenda for the next president.
    Some said participation likely was lower because many immigrants increasingly fear deportation.
    Margot Veranes, a volunteer organizer in Tucson, Ariz., — where 12,000 took to the streets last year but early estimates Thursday put the crowd at about 500 — blamed the turnout on aggressive enforcement by Border Patrol and police.
    “People have been stopped and deported in the last week. This is a community living in fear,” said Veranes, a researcher for the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades. “You never know when you’re going to be stopped by Border Patrol and now the police.”
    But she said that’s also why people were marching.
    “We’re marching to end the raids and the deportations, but we’re also marching for health care and education and good jobs,” she said.
    In Washington, immigrant rights groups and social justice organizations were demanding that Prince William County, in northern Virginia, rescind its anti-illegal immigration measure. They also called for an end to raids and deportations and for establishment of worker centers in Washington, Maryland and Virginia.
    Activists also asked the Republican and Democratic national committees to have their presidential candidates enact immigration reform.
    A crowd of about 1,000 gathered on the steps of the Oregon Capitol in Salem to call for changes in immigration and workplace laws within the first 100 days of the next congressional session. Many demanded that Oregon reverse a decision, imposed by the Legislature in February, to require proof of legal residence to get a driver’s license.
    Hugo Orozzo, 17-year-old high school senior, was among hundreds who marched through the streets of southwest Detroit. He was born in the U.S., but his father was born in Mexico and some other family members are originally from Mexico.
    “It is going to help my family and friends,” Orozzo said of the effort. He carried a preprinted sign that read: “Stop raids and deportations that separate families!” in both English and Spanish.

Legislators from Mexican State Angry at Influx of...Mexicans!

Can you believe the nerve of these people? Nine state legislators from
the Mexican state of Sonora traveled to Tucson to complain about Arizona 's
new employer crackdown on illegals from Mexico . It seems many Mexican
illegals are now returning to their hometowns and the officials in the
Sonora state government are ticked:

A delegation of nine state legislators from Sonora was in Tucson on
Tuesday to say Arizona 's new employer sanctions law will have a
devastating effect on the Mexican state.

At a news conference, the legislators said Sonora - Arizona 's southern
neighbor, made up of mostly small towns - cannot handle the demand for
housing, jobs and schools it will face as illegal Mexican workers here
return to their hometowns without jobs or money.

The law, which took effect Jan.1, punishes employers who knowingly hire
individuals who don't have valid legal documents to work in the United
States . Penalties include suspension or loss of a business license.

They're P.....'d off because their own citizens are returning to their
hometowns, placing a huge burden on their state government. This lady has
some serious balls:

They want to tell them how the law will affect Mexican families on both
sides of the border

'How can they pass a law like this?' asked Mexican Rep. Leticia
Amparano Gamez, who represents Nogales .

'There is not one person living in Sonora who does not have a friend or
relative working in Arizona ,' she said in Spanish.

'Mexico is not prepared for this, for the tremendous problems' it will
face as more and more Mexicans working in Arizona and sending money to
their families return to hometowns in Sonora without jobs, she said.

'We are one family, socially and economically,' she said of the people
of Sonora and Arizona .

Wrong. The United States is a sovereign nation and its states and its
citizens are not responsible for the welfare of Mexico 's citizens. It's
time for the Mexican government to stop parasitically feeding off of the
United States and start taking care of its own citizens.
