Pascarella is selected as leader
New Conservative Party officers include police, firefighters

BY MICHAEL LAMENDOLA Gazette Reporter

The county Conservative Party has new leaders and a new agenda.
Randy M. Pascarella, 43, was elected chairman of the 2,714-member countywide third party. He succeeds Paul Brown, who served as chairman for six years.
Brown and other members of his executive committee chose not to seek office, he said.
The Sept. 12 Conservative Party primary decided all 256 committee seats, which determined the officers elected Sunday night.
Several of the party’s new leaders are police officers and fi refighters from the city and outlying towns. Brown and his officers represented sheriff’s deputies and corrections officers from the Schenectady County Jail. Brown was once president of the correction officers’ union. The party in Schenectady County is influential as a bloc of votes that can determine a close race.
Also elected were David F. Battaglia, vice chairman of legislative District 4; Michael Della Rocco Jr., assistant fire chief of the Schenectady Fire Department, party vice chairman of the city; Peter Rakvica, president of AFSCME Local 1130, which represents 28 workers in the Niskayuna highway and parks departments, party vice chairman in Niskayuna; and Mark LaViolette, a detective with the Schenectady Police Department, vice chairman of the party in Glenville.
Robert Hamilton is Conservative Party club president; he also is president of the Schenectady City Police Department’s union, the Police Benevolent Association. Rosanna DeMarco is treasurer and Kelly Rhinesmith is recording secretary of the club.
Pascarella is a former Republican who switched to the Conservatives last year. He lives in Rotterdam with his wife and four children. He is national sales executive for an automotive chemical company, a member of the Rotterdam Elks and on the executive board of the Rotterdam Little League.
Pascarella said he was asked to run for the chairman’s position by Hamilton and others; Hamilton has emerged as a key figure in the party.
"I have a great business background and they all trust me," Pascarella said. "I’ve been managing people in business my entire life."
Pascarella said the revamped Conservative Party has "a lot of things … to accomplish. We want the party to grow."
He said the party’s committee will meet in coming weeks to discuss goals. In the meantime, he said, the party plans to return to the "traditional values of Conservatives, that of being fiscally conservative and of choosing candidates who are good for the people. We want to keep our traditional Conservative responsibilities intact."
INTERNAL CONFLICTS
The Conservative Party came under fire in the past for endorsing major party candidates perceived as "too liberal" by rank-and-file members. It has frequently endorsed Democrats, including incumbent Sheriff Harry Buffardi.
Pascarella said the county Conservative Party "will cross those bridges when we come to them," regarding endorsements.
Buffardi is seeking re-election in November and won the Conservative Party’s endorsement under Brown.
His Republican challenger, Michael Moffett, tried unsuccessfully to obtain the Conservative Party line in the primary last month.
Buffardi hired Brown in December 2005 to a $55,000 position as inspector in the sheriff’s department.
Hamilton backed Moffett’s effort, as did Republicans.
The city police union has sparred with Buffardi on turf issues in the past and has supported candidates seeking to unseat him in prior elections.
Brown said he did not seek reelection as party chairman because he wants to get out of politics. "I’ve been involved six years and that’s long enough. Politics brings out the worst in people."

I don't really care who is the head of the conservative party as long as they are endorsing candidates that share in the same conservative ideology.

I would care if these candidates were being endorsed for personal, politcal reasons.

How does the conservative party's leadership, which consist of mainly those who's lively hood  benefit directly from government negotiated contracts(Police Chiefs, Fire Chiefs, & public employee union rep.), make the claim they are for being fiscally conservative, and traditional conservatism?  I thought the conservative platform was low taxes and smaller government?  You would have to be blind not to see the conflict of interest between the public servants who head the party, and those conservatives who they supposedly are representing. Rotterdam has already seen the conservative party's endorsement of Bill Cooke in the last supervisor race, as an endorsement for the benefit of the leadership, and not for the rank and file. Unless Conservative Party values are now in line with Working Families Party, and the Democrat Party. The party's which Bill Cooke was endorsed by.

WAKE UP CONSERVATIVES!!! THE PARTY'S BEEN HIJACKED!

Unless you work for Law Enforcement, Fire Protection Service, or a town or county employee.  The Conservative Party is not your party anymore.

Of course the local conservative party is far from real conservatism. They endorsed Bill Cook for goodness sake. We know that Pascarella and Hamilton are there for their own personal reasons. Not because they share the conservatism ideology. So the conserv's have a few choice....a)take your party back...b)change parties.....c)start a third party.

They make endorsements, does this become a purchase of the party line for the leaders that run eacha nd every thing here in the county? I bet it does. Bob God. you bectcha dupa it does!

So you are saying that the local conservative party is being compromised? That is clearly what it is sounding like. But then again we already knew that!

It's not close enough to election time yet. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if the were engaging in back room deals now. Judy Dagostino and Randy Pascarella will just spring it on Rotterdam like they did the last one. And of course if Judy Dagostino comes through with yet another little league field before the elections, the conservs will back her. Don'tcha just love politics?

Actually, to be honest, this property is now looking less like Little League fields and more like the Marotta Dump.  Everytime I leave my house and head that direction, it makes me think that there's a major company working out of there.  Everybody fought and the people who were against Wal-Mart won for the store to not go in there.  I was for the store at the time that it was proposed and now realize that while it would be a good place, it's probably not the best place for it.  That being said, going around that corner and seeing a Wal-Mart would be MUCH better right now than driving by and seeing all the heavy machinery that is being parked there each and every day.  Now I know what the people were complaning about with the looks at the Marotta Dump, even if this doesn't affect our drinking water.

I can't believe you just said that. Yesterday I had to go that way and I thought the same thing. That piece of land looks awful. And no one would ever know that there even was a little league field there. That must be our punishment from Larned for robbing him of the chance to make a bundle  from Walmart.

Thank you Judy Dagostino for selling the land out from under the Republican members to Larned in the first place!! And now she is a Schenectady county democrat for which she is well suited.
