You are right about that one shadow. Senders will be given us the low down on that business when it opens.

Honestly, I have heard nothing but good things about this new 'thrift store'. I just think having it right near a Walmart may not enhance the area...if ya know what I mean here. But rest assured that senders will keep us abreast of the situation.

speaking of Altamont Ave....the new owner of the Mobil doesn't seem to be concerned about the asthetics of their property and it could really use some help there....also the owner of the Citgo really needs to clean up the property.....

if it looks like no one is watching and no one really cares.....then those who visit or move here will have the same attitude....

If we build it they will come.....what character you build is what character you will get......keep the 'bar' raised please....you took on the responsibility of ownership......

You're right. The property is looking pretty shabby if you ask me. And of course if another business wants to move in, they will have to deal with the underground gas tanks and the DEC. Hopefully this building won't be vaccant for tooooo long!

Fist of all, the sign on the front of the building was going on while I was in the Hannaford / Wal-Mart / Goodwill Plaza today.

I went over to the Goodwill store in Albany yesterday (I think, my days are running together).  I must say, while it may not be walking into Macy's, J.C. Penney's, etc, it's not much of a step down from actually walking into Wally World.  In fact, I was in the A.J. Wright store today and I would expect that some of the people that were shopping there (and were shopping over at Wally World) would actually be the same customers as the people that would be shopping in the Goodwill Store.  And can I say that their prices may actually put the hurting to Wal-Mart to some extent.  They did have really well taken care of clothes on their racks, and they had prices that would make Wal-Marts manufacturers on the other side of the ocean shiver.  They probably couldn't pay a weeks wages to 10 people for the amount we paid for one pair of pants (versus the 100 people they'd be able to pay for a week on the pair you buy at Wal-Mart.  Now, I didn't drive behind the store over in Albany to see what it looked like since I didn't have anything to drop off, but it looked as though it was rather well taken care of.

Anybody who's wondering, the other store is over at the SouthWest corner of the intersection of Central and Fuller in a former drug store (CVS, if I'm not mistaken).  Just before you get to Fuller Rd, or you can enter from Fuller Rd, also.

I have to say that I have heard nothing but good things about this place. But putting that aside, why wasn't it put in the city? Ya know if  one of their many  many vaccant buildings.
I would have preferred something somewhat more upscale to add a little divercity to the Hannaford Plaza. We might as well change the name from 'Hanna ford Plaza' to 'Cantafford Plaza'!

I do have one question about this place, though.  Where does the money go?  Does it get syphoned back down to NYC or will it stay local to do some good?

Good question. And I'm guessing that if we have clothes we no longer need, we can drop off to them, right? And that would depend on what BK asked. I would do that, depending what they did for the community. I usually contribute do City Mission. It is a great organization.

Goodwill Industries is all about people working.
We are one of the world’s largest nonprofit providers of education, training, and career services for people with disadvantages, such as welfare dependency, homelessness, and lack of education or work experience, as well as those with physical, mental and emotional disabilities. Last year, local Goodwills collectively provided employment and training services to more than 930,775 individuals.

We believe that work has the power to transform lives by building self-confidence, independence, creativity, trust and friendships. Everyone deserves a chance to have these.

Goodwill provides that chance.
Goodwill Industries will enhance the quality and dignity of life for individuals, families, and communities on a global basis, through the power of work, by eliminating barriers to opportunity for people with special needs, and by facilitating empowerment, self-help, and service through dedicated, autonomous local organizations.

We at Goodwill Industries will be satisfied only when every person in the global community has the opportunity to achieve his/her fullest potential as an individual and to participate and contribute fully in all aspects of a productive life.

This appears to be a very good organization. However, I think it would be more of a benefit for the people who actually live in the city of Schenectady as opposed to Rotterdam. It would accomplish what the city government can't accomplish. There are clearly more than enough empty buildings in the city to house this service. Since Schenectady is leaning more to an urban culture, the Goodwill providers would be an asset for them.
Rotterdam is NOT URBAN! It is a small bedroom community. Just a little township! We would like to keep it that way!

I wonder what their stand is on National Health Care?? I wonder if they have English classes for those immigrants receiving 'services'?

The people from the City of Schenectady can shop at the Good Will Store while there in the Hannaford Mall shopping at Walmart. The prices might be cheaper at the Good Will Store than at Walmart anyway so it should do a good business.

Now, they had help wanted signs.  If you work there as a cashier or stock person, what do they pay?  Do they pay a living wage?  Do they provide good health and dental coverage to their employees?   Do they provide a pension?  How many weeks vacation do the employees get?

Optimists close their eyes and pretend problems are non existent.
Better to have open eyes, see the truths, acknowledge the negatives, and
speak up for the people rather than the politicos and their rich cronies.
