My Dad admitted from the ER a few days ago. Saturday he was doing better. This morning get a call he's not walking good, needs to go to skilled nursing blah blah............ I said hell no.
My brother and I go up today, Dad is shaking ALL over. I thought a fever or reaction to antibiotic. Come to find out they were giving him the WRONG
medications and NOT giving him the ones he needed especially his water pill. No wonder he was short of breath.
In all FIVE medication errors. Can't even get into it all now, too upset.

I am so sorry you and your family have to go through this. I went through the same thing when my mom was in the hospital a few years ago. They over medicated her and she almost died. My advice to everyone that has a loved one in the hospital is that to make sure there is someone there 24 hours/day until they are discharged. I hired aids to stay with my mom when I couldn't be there. Sadly, that is the way it is now. It is awful and I feel so bad for you. It is so stressful. I hope things get better for you.

Sorry you went through this too JoAnn : (
To make matters worse after my brother told them to call the memory care my Dad is staying at to get the correct meds and dosages (which the ER
did have when the ambulance brought him there)  I was in dads room and heard the nurse talking to the memory care nurse and after she got off the
phone she said to another staff member "Only 5 med mistakes" and they both laughed. Needless to say I went out and said "so you think this is funny'?!
Dad went from being alert Saturday to being dazed and with uncontrollable shaking today. Its hard enough having a parent suffering from Alzhiemers
but then to have him have to go through this : (

Im going to bed, my heart hurts.

Friend just went through a horrendous experience with a relative at the Ellis ER last week too. Was sent there by the Nursing Home.  Not gonna get into specifics because it is going to be formally reported. I recommended she contact J.A.C.O. https://www.jointcommission.org/who certifies them as being a good hospital.  I told my friend to go to the following link https://www.jointcommission.org/contact_directory/ and go down the phone numbers till maybe she gets to someone who can take a report of the negligence and also to contact the NYS Health Department and to Medicare.

The new ER is a lot worse then the old one. Folks take a list of your meds with ya but insist they make a copy and hand it back to you.  You need to be there with your loved one when the doc comes in to confirm he saw the list your relative or friend gave that nurse!!!!  TRIPLE check, they don't listen, you have to be assertive.  Don't leave your loved ones side for the night!!!  Have someone stay with them in the ER at all times!!  At all times ask which medications are being dispensed and also any IV's.  It may save yours or your relative or friends life.  Not a joke as you read what happened above.

Oh by the way some one wrote in the Gazette a few weeks back in their Letters to the Editor about Ellis ER Complaining about the quality of care.

Cel, you are absolutely correct!!! NEVER leave them alone!!

My mom ended up in a nursing home in the end and it is no different there either. I can't tell you how many times I reported them to the state for overdosing her to under-dosing her. There were tons of med errors and 'some' neglect. (and this was suppose to be one of the top nursing homes.)I kept a daily journal and I suggest you do the same. I would also ask for the Ellis records of his stay there. (I did with my mom) And every time I called the state on the nursing home, I asked for those records too. Both Ellis and the nursing home tried to charge me for the records and I told them that they can either give them to me free now or give them to an attorney later. Needless to say, they gave them to me for free.

I hear that it is like this at all medical facilities now. It is the 'new' medical system that we now call Obamacare.

And can I say that I know exactly what you mean when you say 'your heart hurts'. My mom passed in February and although I miss her, I don't miss the stress and the heartache. At least now she is at peace. My prayers are with you and loved ones. No one understands until they go through it.

Thank you Cel and Joann for the info. JoAnn sorry to hear your mother passed, but understand what you mean about her being at peace.

It only got worse today, can't go into specifics as filed complaint.

As for the ER, unbelievable what an elderly woman was going through (two in a room my dad and her) she was there alone and her screams of pain
made me cringe. And how they went about a procedure

Been on the phone all morning going to sit and try to relax before heading up to the hospital.

I also took "lots" of pictures AND videos with my cell phone through the years. They came in VERY handy when I made my reports to the state. And I never lost. The facilities were ALWAYS found negligent. I'll pray that God gives you the strength to press on. Good luck to you, and please keep us posted.

rpforpres,

I'm sorry to hear about your bad experiences at Ellis Hospital and hope that your Dad is recovering.  Have you considered moving him to St. Peters or Albany Medical Center?  Though I'm sure that there are occasional issues/mistakes that occur at both facilities, the medical staffs are, in my opinion, more professional, knowledgeable, disciplined, and caring of patients and family than the callous staff at Ellis.

My brother called me he got a call from the nursing home dad fell, unsteady on his feet, ELLIS rushed to get him out even with the ill effects of the
wrong meds given to him.  And the excuse the nurse at Ellis gave me for not giving him his VERY IMPORTANT medication would blow your mind.

When my brother called to tell me dad fell he said what do you think if dad needs to go to the hospital again we sent him to St. Peters.

I said "OH HELL YES"

Ellis is a shi!thole... I'd go to St Petes, Albany Med and Saratoga before them... I'd flip a coin if I had to choose between Ellis, Albany Memorial and the Catholic hospitals in Troy and Amsterdam.

Why are they sending him to the hospital if he fell? My mom fell many times and I insisted they have a portable imaging company come in to take xrays. And they always did. On one occasion, my mom fell due to their neglect, and fractured her back. (attorney and the state was involved in that one) She never went to the hospital for that. I can only speak for myself, but I had more control in the nursing home than I did in the hospital. I also didn't want my mom going through the stressful change from nursing home, to ambulance, to hospital, back to the ambulance and back to the nursing home. It would be very very stressful for her. A change of hospital may be better, but if the nursing home is listed as a SKILLED nursing facility, then they should be able to handle most issues.

I feel your pain and praying for you and your family.

JoAnn they didn't send him back to the hospital, maybe I worded it wrong. They just called to let us know he fell but he was not injured. My brother
said if dad needs to go another time that we have him go to st. peters.

Saw Dad yesterday, still having effects from the wrong meds given to him, I HATE seeing him like this. Took strength not to cry infront of him
