A Schenectady police officer barricaded himself in his home on Mariaville Road this afternoon. Rotterdam police Lt. Michael Brown said Schenectady police went to the officer's home, located at 3041 Mariaville Road, regarding an internal affairs matter. Schenectady police Lt. Mark McCracken declined to provide the officer's name or details of the internal affairs matter, citing federal privacy law. Schenectady Public Safety Commissioner Wayne Bennett also declined to provide the officer’s name or details of .

According to property records, the house is owned by Schenectady police Officer Joseph McCabe.

When Schenectady police arrived at the residence, the officer made irrational statements and barricaded himself inside, Brown said.

Brown said the officer, who was off-duty at the time, did not threaten the other officers or display his weapon.

Schenectady police called Rotterdam police for backup around 3 p.m. along with the state police, according to Brown.

After about an hour the officer willingly left the house and was taken into custody, Brown said.

"He complied with our orders to come out eventually," Brown said. "He did not make any threats."

It is unclear at this time if the officer will be facing charges by the Rotterdam Police Department.

The area of Mariaville Road was blocked to traffic but has since been reopened.

While I don't know Joe, only met him once, I do know the family and know that they have already been through a lot with the death of his wife. For the sake of his children, I hope this is all a very bad misunderstanding, but the bits of information that have leaked out certainly make me believe that this isn't just a little matter than can be white washed. Especially now that this incident has occurred.
