I pay $6000 yearly to my landlord .. the house I was looking at is pretty decent needing a few repairs
I'd have to pay the taxes on the house at $3500 yearly..plus pay water/sewage/garbage pickup... and be responsible for any failings for things such as heating plumbing etc
so all in all i am not really saving too much money vs staying where I am, so looking for a house in Schenectady just screams TAX BURDEN..
What are taxes like in Renssalaer County?

Have you learned nothing from the housing market crisis of 2007-08?  You have no control over the value of your primary residence.  I hate to break it to you...the moment interest rates begin to rise, that equity you think you have in your home...it disappears.

THANK YOU! ^5
I thought folks already knew that....guess not.

Brad - I thought you were looking for a "lot" - not a house.
Landlord?  You own your property (not in Schenectady) - and your mother owns hers.  Which landlord are you referring to?  Your real estate office?

We are advised NOT to judge ALL Muslims by the actions of a few lunatics, but we are encouraged to judge ALL gun owners by the actions of a few lunatics.   Funny how that works.

I currently rent in Schenectady and I was initially looking into buying and refurbishing a house in Schenectady with the intention of living there, but after I saw how high the taxes are on the place I have decided to just buy a lot and build a home out of a couple of shipping containers. I am admittedly on the low end of the market and I would prefer not to take on a huge debt buying a pre-built house. I cannot figure out where the tax money goes in Schenectady I have paid taxes here for 2 years and the roads haven't gotten any better.

You better find a lot of acreage because you are going to get the connected NIMBY neighbors who will get the building dept to deny your shipping container idea.
