I was looking for some cheap plots of land in Rotterdam to build a self sustaining home. I was leaning towards the 10K range I know some spots in Rotterdam are pretty rural.

those aren't even remotely in my price range their either too big or too expensive surely with all the rural land there is like about a 1/2 acre to 1 acre for under 10K

If expense is a concern, Why would you select a location where you pay high Town tax, high County tax, and high School tax?  You should not be looking in Schenectady County imho!

hmmm where would you recommend? I want to remain somewhat in the Albany area. It is honestly pretty sad that buying a home out here isn't all that much cheaper than renting an apartment here.. I am honestly considering just buying a small lot and moving a couple of 40ft covex boxes on it..

Why would buying a home cost less than renting an apartment?

Unless you are talking about renting a house, in which case it IS about the same cost. But when you buy you are building equity rather than giving it away to your landlord

I was thinking you could find land in Schoharie/Middleburgh, Galway, Town of Providence, Fulton County.  If you need to be in Albany area, you might get lucky in the Berne/Knox area, maybe Voorheesville.

buying a home does NOT guarantee 'building equity'.
it's a roll of the dice.
and you never really OWN it.
you either are in debt to the bankers.....the municipality via taxes.....you can't do ANYTHING on YOUR OWNED property without permission (permits) from your municipality.

so pick your poison....pay the bankers, taxes, fees or the landlord.

BS.
I can think of a million things I can do on my property without anyone's permission. And unless you are a fool its very easy to build equity when you own a home compared to renting in which case you are guaranteed to lose your money. Hell, I've only owned my home for a year and I'm already well above water.

Either way you've got it mixed up. you pay the bankers, taxes, fees, AND yourself (equity), OR you pay the landlords bankers, landlords taxes, landlords fees, AND the landlord

Have you learned nothing from the housing market crisis of 2007-08?  You have no control over the value of your primary residence.  I hate to break it to you...the moment interest rates begin to rise, that equity you think you have in your home...it disappears.
