I am looking at getting a home in Schenectady, but so far it is looking like the taxes on some of these places put it at about the same cost as renting an apartment. Is $4500 really an average amount of taxes on some of these properties? If so I am not sure it is really worth owning a home out here.

Here you go: Assessed -  91000

full market value ao 07/01/2014 - 75207

equal rate 121.00%

total taxes due with all fees - 2755.16

total school w/star - 1388.49

wo/star - school would be 2068

equal rate skews the star exemption by approx 6400 dollars upward

2755 figure includes county tax and election chg of approx 630 dollars. They like to be cute and call it a mandate

Imagine the tax bills for homes in and around the GE plot area.

There are three empty homes within a stone's throw and, risking rotator cuff injury, one other a bit further

Found your first problem right here.

I was looking for some cheap plots of land in Rotterdam to build a self sustaining home. I was leaning towards the 10K range I know some spots in Rotterdam are pretty rural.

yeah I am no longer looking in Schenectady the whole reason for me buying a home is so I don't have to be beholden to anybody i figure if i bought the place I was looking at in Schenectady it is $3500 in yearly tax so I'd be saving $2500 a year over renting at my current place add on Sewer, water and trash pickup to my bills and i doubt it'll be much cheaper than renting a place..

Casinos that do stay in business yield less to their towns and states. Revenues from Maryland’s first casino, in Perryville, at the northern tip of Chesapeake Bay, have already dropped 30 percent from their peak in 2008, and are expected to decline even more rapidly in future as competitors proliferate.

Yet the truly bad news about casinos is not found in the tax receipts. It’s found in the casinos' economic and social impact on the towns that welcome them.

Until the late 1970s, no state except Nevada permitted casino gambling. Then Atlantic City persuaded its state legislature to allow casinos, in hope of reviving the prosperity of the battered resort town. Hotels sprung up along the seafront. Thousands of people were hired. And the rest of Atlantic City … saw no benefits at all. All these years later, it still has desperate trouble sustaining even a single grocery store.

No one should look to casinos to revive cities, “because that’s not what casinos do.” So explained the project manager for a new Wynn casino rising near Philadelphia. He’s right, but it has taken a surprisingly long time for city governments to acknowledge a fact that was well understood by the 19th-century Americans who suppressed gambling in the decades after the Civil War.
