It is ridiculous to say that it doesn't make financial sense on Wal-Mart's part because they have been looking to build a Super-Center on the west side of Schenectady for years.  As for Hannaford, I am not sure they will be around in that plaza for very long -- at least that is what I have heard from my sources.

So, it make financial sense to have another supercenter a few miles away from Glenville, which will cut sales in Glenville and put them in a Rotterdam store.  NET EFFECT ZERO, but the company will have higher expenses (cost to buy the property on which Staples sits, cost to remodel/expand, should be higher assessment so higher expense in taxes, well, until they would grieve the assessment before a new "grand opening," they DID grieve their assessment in Glenville BEFORE the place opened there).

"from my sources"

.

Hannaford's is a great store ... me and my family do all our grocery shopping there and at Gabriel's.

Or can't remember which lies they've told.

brick and mortar buildings are going bye-bye...........demolish the building quick and plant some f'en trees already.......

malls/stores etc will be obsolete in the next decade....or maybe some kind of 'back to the future' novelty

They will be diminished in market share, but they will not be going bye-bye...
The are some things that people need to touch and feel before they buy it.

The malls are doing the social thing (eaterys, etc) as a lure to their retail stores.
Online buying will grow, but not completely replace brick and mortar... even with the Hi-tech stuff, people like to touch and feel..
You can't do comparisons of things like cameras, TV's and clothing (there is NO universal sizing standard) online.

Agree...and a lot of what happens is people go to B&M to figure out what they want, then shop online for best prices

I think it works both ways.  Some go to bricks and mortar to check things out ..  then go online for the best price.   Others go online to check things out, gather information and prices but then go to the bricks and mortar to purchase.   It really depends what is being purchased.

Clothing - I still prefer to try it on and do the actual purchasing in a store.  But then, if I bought something that I such as buying a shirt at a B & M store  -- say at LLBean -- If I really like it .. I may order the same style shirt in other colors online after that.

Home Furnishing/Home Goods - we went to 4 bricks and mortar stores (all big names locally) to buy furniture, curtains, etc.   We bought merchandise at all 4 but also found that other items in a particular "collection" (furniture or curtains & bedding & bathroom accessories))  could not all be purchased at the store.  Store A may carry curtains in Manufacturer B's  "C- Collection" but the matching bathroom and bedding items may be only available online.
