The Walmart/Hannaford Plaza will  be a bigger shithole than it is now...

I'm suprised this place stayed open as long as they did, their prices were extremly high, everything for sale their could easily be found on the internet for half the cost, not to mention 100 yards away at Walmart for less as well, lastly their main business is office supplies, yet their location was no where near any offices.

Staples is in the process of buying out OfficeDepot-OfficeMax.  The deal has been approved by the shareholders of both companies, still needs regulatory approval and it (the sale) is expected to close by the end of the year.  When the deal was first unveiled earlier in the year, Staples said that it would close as many as 1,000 of its stores that were within 5 miles of an OfficeDepot or OfficeMax store.  Obviously, the Altamont Avenue Staples is within 5 miles of the OfficeMax on Campbell Road.
Now that the Staples is closing on Altamont Avenue, I think that it would be a perfect opportunity for WalMart to purchase that property and expand its store into a WalMart Super Center.

Your idea isn't well thought out... The plaza is all owned by one group-Nigro, If they were somehow able to get Walmart to pay more money to expand this location, It would make no financial sense on Wal Marts part considering they already have  2 other super centers and their Niskayuna mini mart all within 20 miles already, plus multiple grocery stores within a mile, no way they are dumping money into a flooded market to compete with themselves for a miniscule increase in same store sales.

From Nigro's perspective they would also be putting in a direct competitor to their other largest leaser Hannaford in the same plaza. One or the other would win, or someone will get pissed and now they have have one of their two largest buildings open with no tenant, they would be commiting financial suicide.

Actually, it isn't my idea.  It is ridiculous to say that it doesn't make financial sense on Wal-Mart's part because they have been looking to build a Super-Center on the west side of Schenectady for years.  As for Hannaford, I am not sure they will be around in that plaza for very long -- at least that is what I have heard from my sources.

Wal mart was looking to build a Super Center on the west side of Schenectady prior to their building in Glenville and Niskayuna, it made sense a decade ago and makes little sense now, they didn't get this big wasting money competing with themselves. Per Google Maps the drive between the Rotterdam and Glenville Wal Marts is just 11 minutes and the drive between the Rotterdam Wal Mart and the Niskayuna Wal Mart is just 8 minutes.

I think different demographics at each...taxis and buses deliver patrons to Rotterdam...so I think this location is still viable without impacting others.
Will be interesting to see what shake out, if anything.

Wal-Mart has never given up on looking for a place to build a Super Center on the west side of Schenectady.
The Altamont Avenue location would be ideal for a number of reasons:
#1) it is already zoned for retail ... so Wal-Mart would not have to go through a Change of Zone process.  It would basically just have to go through the Site Plan process.
#2) Wal-Mart had always intended to close the Altamont Avenue store if it opened a Super Center on the west side of Schenectady.  With Staples out of the picture, they could just tear down the Staples and expand the existing store into a Super Center.

Another factor, you write that Glenville, which is a Super Center,  is an 11 minute drive and Niskayuna, which is NOT a Super Center and therefore not really comparable, is an 8 minute drive.  You are assuming that all of the customers have a car and drive.  You are forgetting about the many people who don't own a car and utilize mass transit or walk.   A Wal-Mart Super Center would be ideal on Altamont Avenue -- it is within walking distance for many potential customers AND on a bus line.

Glenville and State St Walmarts are not on a bus route??? Geez, that's news to me and probably the hundreds everyday that get there by bus.
All I know is if the Rotterdam Hannaford goes, so does my Grocery shopping in Rotterdam. I only go the Altamont Ave price chopper if I have to (ridiculous traffic and amateur hour in the parking lot), and I have no interest in shopping at a Walmart Super Center.

The walmart in ROTTENdam ain't doing that good anyway.
that comes right from the 'top' at the store.
also.....from what I understand, there can never be a full market super center in Hannaford plaza because of Hannaford.
I believe that was in the original contract.
as far as the west end....there is no logical place EXCEPT.....by I88.
if that ever happens....say goodbye to the west end.
