From the Daily Gazette May 16:
City should cite itself for condition of roads

Re May 11 article, "Schenectady code sweep upsets homeowners": I believe that the city had one hell of a nerve giving some taxpaying citizens code violations and the mayor stating that if the citizens "put their interests above the common sense of the good of the community, then I don't want them here as property owners."

He'd better also give himself and the city fathers citations in regard to the terrible condition of all the city streets. I have lived here all my 83 years and never have I seen the streets in such a deplorable condition. It certainly shows no interest or any good common sense for this city as a whole.

What say you Mr. Mayor?

"It was a severe winter" and "Our crews are working full time on repairing the roads"

The typical - and actually true - responses he would give to that.

It however doesn't address some roads that were completely resurfaced only maybe 5 years ago, and are falling apart again.

Nor the fact that it's now the second half of May and there are some devastatingly deep and wide potholes still out there.  One would think that the most severe ones would be addressed by now.

Of course the mayor, his code department, and the mayor's BIG (in more ways than one) cheerleader who posts on these boards will NOT speak about that!

Optimists close their eyes and pretend problems are non existent.
Better to have open eyes, see the truths, acknowledge the negatives, and
speak up for the people rather than the politicos and their rich cronies.

Wow. This coach guy really spelled it out. That's what I've been saying, about McCheese's ultra-moronic statements about taxes relative to property values. Smart buyers stay away. The poor woman who just lost her dream house, the one I've mentioned on another thread, she was attracted by the "low" price, I think, and some people obviously gave her bad information. I thought that was illegal now. Anyway, these people who rope in the unwary deserve to burn in Hell.
It was a rough winter. So? Winters with more freeze-and-thaw cycles create more potholes. If crews are working full-time on fixing them, they aren't working anywhere where I can see them. It's the middle of May. There is absolutely no excuse good enough for the abominable conditions of these roads.McCheese should get out and patch the potholes himself. He's be doing something of actual value.

Jess Petrequin works in Goose Hill, a neighborhood slammed with violations. Each citation comes with an automatic $50 fine, and he feels some people can’t afford to have the work done.

I thought DVOR said these were "warning citations"?  Automatic $50 fine?  That's because the city government cares.

Quoted from the article: "McCarthy was in New York City on Friday. He spoke with NEWS10 by phone and said the city is planning to address the issues, but there is work that needs to be done inside the building and he wants to get all the work done at the same time."

Any time limit on this work? 15, 30, 45 days?

File this one in the same cabinet that holds the high taxes, low home values are a better deal farcical statement.

It isn't just me saying it.  It has been said in a number of newspaper, t.v. and radio news stories.

This is a quote from the story which was in the May 11 Daily Gazette:  "Wanda Neale of 717 Hattie St. is upset with the code violation warning she received for not having a proper hand railing for one side of her front steps on Monday."

There were other references in radio and t.v. news reports that they were warning citations and that they would have 45 days to fix the issue without having to appear in court or be levied a fine.

There was also the reference in news accounts to the fact that in past sweeps over 80% of code problems that were issued a warning citation were resolved without having to appear in court or be levied a fine.

So it boils down to this -- you are entitled to your own opinion but not to your facts.  The FACTS are that the city is doing its job  by enforcing its codes, the city issued warning citations and the city is willing to work with the property owners to fix the code violations.

...You forgot...Except code enforcement on government owned properties.  Because in government, when they use their resources(the tens of millions collected through taxes) to pay for salaries and retirements FIRST, and have no money left for repairs on government buildings(like City Hall), that is ok.  But if a resident wants to forego repairs on their property because it's not in their budget, that's a violation.

It all boils down to this -- The city government(and most governments) are full of crooks and use the power to fine people to force them to spend money they don't have on their private property.  All while they ignore the city owned properties that are guilty of the same code violations.

I'll let Mayor McCarthy know that you and the other nayboobs are willing to VOLUNTEER your time to make all the repairs on government building in the city.
