Ok - Why are homeowners neglecting the safe repair of their property?  Is it because they like putting themselves and everybody else at risk?  Are they just irresponsible?

Good question. Ask that to the property owners who received the warning citations.

Here's my question - why is a grown, unemployed man knocking these elderly women, or any taxpaying resident, for that matter? You think you sound tough, or smart, or anything at all resembling an adult, responsible male? Eesh. Sickening. Go offer to fix their steps for them, you creep. Oh that's right, you wouldn't begin to know how.

As usual Madam Xlax employs the nayboob technique: when they have nothing to say .. they just make up lies.
The real questions are:
Why do the nayboobs slectively ignore the fact that past code enforcement sweeps led to something like 75% compliance without any property owner being fined?
Why do the nayboobs want excuses to flaunt the law and allow properties in the city to go neglected and pose safety hazards?

Yeah...threatening to drag somebody on a fixed income to court if they don't spend their money on their private property the way the city says they should is a real success.

The city was not pristine - at any point in its history - unless you go back to the pre-stockade era.  There were eyesores and problems 50 years ago and at every stage of the city's history.  The only thing that has changed is that you took off your rose-colored glasses.

You are kidding here right?
Schenectady WAS pristine!!
Hamilton Hill and Mt. Pleasant were CLEARLY not the dangerous slums they are today!!!
Not to mention Eastern pkwy, Mcclellen, Brandywine, VanVranken, Albany St.....just to name a few areas!
OH....and how were the roads back then?
Please tell us what eyesores there were back in the day when I wore those 'rose-colored glasses' and compare them to today....K?
And while you're at it...please give us the compared stats on crime as well...and the school's graduation rates then and now......K?
THE CITY'S A SCUM HOLE!!!
I think you need to take your rose colored glasses off.....in all do respect of course.

What lies have I told? Yes, I've come out in favor of flaunting the "Fix Your Steps or Else, Ladies!" law, but that's not a lie.
Send Galesi over there. We've got him on retainer, he can get these small jobs done for these ladies in half a day. Send the code enforcers back, but this time, give 'em a sack of cold patch, tell them what it's for, and let them do some REAL mitigation of safety hazards.

It IS about safety -- and the city is acting properly and responsibly by enforcing the laws and codes ACROSS THE BOARD.  You may want excuses to keep your property derelict and non-compliant --- but you won't get excuses.  Be a responasible property owner -- and fix your place up.

"ACROSS THE BOARD"   ???????????

DV, tell us how it is across the board when the city FAILS to issue code violations to itself, on the properties it owns!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Come on DV, answer that question!!!!!!!!!!!!!   Well, cowardly cuckoo?????

Yeah, some overgrown weeds are safety issues.

A little peeling paint is a safety issue

Hell DV, are you unable to go up or down stairs unless you are holding on to a railing??????    We have a railing going to the upstairs in our house.  WE NEVER hold the railing.

Hubby works on a 6th floor and uses the stairs instead of the elevator upon arriving in the a.m. and almost any time he has to return to his office from a meeting on a lower floor or outside of the building, and if he's gone from lunch.  He NEVER touches the railing.  And he kind of runs up the stairs, i.e., that which people do when they are using the stairs for exercise.   But then, your "figure" shows that you don't know anything about exercise.

Sure most older people need railings.  But even then, many don't.  Hell, most people your age an younger can, without a railing, go up by skipping every other step.  And rarely get hurt.

Tell THAT do the city for the hundreds of properties that the city owns which (mostly) vacant properties are NOT boarded up in accordance with the laws, they rarely get shoveled by the city, lawns don't get mowed, paint is peeling, etc. etc. etc. etc.

Well?

Many, if not most, of these issues, such as railings, became issues well after these homes were built. You were doing fine for decades, with no railing or one railing? Too bad.
Some of these issues are cosmetic. No, I don't want my neighbor's house to be an eyesore, but my guess is, these houses in the article look better than 90% of the properties in that area.
There's a new thing, starting in the West (that's Western USA) natch, an idea that all homes should have to have the kind of doorknobs that you see in doctor's offices and public buildings. You know, those purse catcher/arm manglers? Do not underestimate the forces of overbearing government.

[b].  There are programs  (Umbrella is one of them) that exist to help seniors and other homeowners make necessary home repairs.

Great for the little jobs, oh, the sink drain is plugged, call the little handyman.  Or the lawn needs mowing.

But provide us some FACTS on complete repainting, putting on a new slate roof, taking down and rebuilding a garage or the back porch or a front porch, or putting in a complete total new sidewalk, etc.

And then DV, since only 2,493 properties have the Senior STAR exemption, that is only about 10% of all properties in the city that are seniors who have stayed in their city homes, and there are only 1,221 residences of seniors who are low income.

So now, tell us DV, tell us what programs there are for the young families with children of which most have incomes under $40,000, they pay probably $6,000 or more in property & school taxes plus the (non tax deductible) "fees," and these are people that are paying for the demolition of the old DSS building owned by a billionaire.   Your beloved McCarthy provided a FULLY PAID -- by the taxpayers -- "program" to his billionaire crony Galesi who has more than enough money to completely pay his own demolition of the old DSS building.  So now tell us what Galesi funded program is provided to the taxpayers to fix up their homes????

Well????????

Yes, DV, provide links to such programs.  Give us details on the income eligibility, give us details on the length of any waiting lists.  Etc.

The thread was about mistreatment of the elderly by the city. Most agree that mistreating elderly people is a bad thing. In fact, there is only one person arguing in favor of it.
