Several residents of the city’s Goose Hill neighborhood say they feel picked on by code enforcement as officials cited them for minor repairs during a sweep on Monday.
Schenectady’s annual Neighborhood Code Compliance Review left property owners near Union College frustrated with the city’s Code Department. They blasted the city for abandoned homes that attract crime, high property taxes and unfair code inspections.
“This is just awful,” said Wanda Neale, 73, who has lived at her home on Hattie Street for 19 years. “I pay my taxes, and taxes are so high. They’re picking on people, and that’s not right.”
Code enforcement issued a notice for Neale to fix her concrete steps, which are starting to crumble, and to install a new railing. “We had a bad winter,” she said. “I will get it fixed but I am on Social Security and don’t have a high income.” As part of the code review, Neale was handed an orange sheet of paper that requires a response within 15 days. After the 15 days she has another 30 days to get the issues fixed and brought up to code
Yes, difficult winter.
As DV says, "cheer cheer rah rah, the mayor is doing a wonderful job, the city is improving."
Poor woman pays her taxes and how has just 30 days to get stair fixed. And she pays the taxes of the billionaire Galesi!!!!
Optimists close their eyes and pretend problems are non existent. Better to have open eyes, see the truths, acknowledge the negatives, and speak up for the people rather than the politicos and their rich cronies.
Neale’s neighbor, Valerie Seegobin, 69, was cited by code enforcement to repair her chimney, which is starting to deteriorate.
“We have the highest taxes and they’re citing me for a chimney,” said Seegobin, who has lived in her home on Hattie Street for 12 years. “I don’t even use the chimney. I think I need to sell the house.”
Shilling suggested she remove the chimney completely and cap it. He complimented Seegobin’s home, which she said was more than 100 years old.
And WHO is supposed to pay to remove the chimney????? And then fix the roof? I wonder if it's a slate roof
The mayor and his unqualified leaders think the elderly are rolling in money.

Down the street on Hattie, Maria Perri was also cited for several issues. The city is requiring her to fix her front railing, replace missing shingles and repair a sewer pipe.
Since when are sewer pipes on the outside of a house? Are they entering the houses looking through everything?

knocked the city for not keeping up with repairs to its own properties

The Fire Department looks for fire hazards, such as loose wiring and blocked doors, in an effort to prevent fires, said Fire Chief Ray Senecal.
And how about the code inspection, including looking for fire hazards, was done on Jay St only a few hours before the fire which killed several and made 60 people homeless?????
Where are the results of that code inspection??????

lol...rattle a few cages and all will be forgotten
What the hell is wrong with the mayor, codes and the fire dept???? I have called for TWO years about the CITY owned property next door to me that has broken out windows and they have NOT been boarded up.
I am the one going out sweeping up the glass after more glass is broken.
I am the one having to keep an eye on the house as its not boarded up.
So they pick on the elderly homeowners on fixed incomes while the CITY owned vacant buildings are the REAL danger.
Anyone given a citation should have until all potholes are filled and all vacant homes boarded up to comply. Senior citizens on fixed incomes should be given a number to call, to see about getting the work done free/at a reduced rate. Someone working for the city should be responsible for coming up with the program to assist the seniors. We don't have enough well-paid city employees, and non-profit organizations, as well as well-to-do individuals receiving various handouts, that we can't help these women, rather than singling them out for harassment? Way to sell H.O.M.E.S in the city, morons.

This city is fuc*ed up.
YOU SAID IT!
You should really write a dear editor letter to both newspapers. Don't worry if it's not professional written, or not grammatically correct, etc. Just a short letter about how McCarthy is putting on this act, getting headlines in the paper, making it seem like he's doing something, making it seem like he's trying to make the city look attractive and be up to codes, but that only is applies to property owned by the taxpayers and not to properties owned by the city.
And add how McCarthy is unworthy of re-election by virtue of his refusal to reassess houses of the average taxpayers, but he gleefully reduces the assessments of newly remodeled buildings owned by his billionaire political cronies.

AMEN TO THAT TOO!
But why doesn't the mayor talk about the federal money that the city administers for people to get the home improvement money. I think the people apply, the city inspects, the city presents to the homeowner those who are supposedly acceptable contractors to do the work. I reference this because the city had among it's acceptable contractors that drug dealer Civiltello who was laundered some half million dollars in connection with his getting work from these grants to low and middle income homeowners. So is this federal money being diverted to Galesi and the rest of his cronies?

hmmmmmmmmmmmmm......I know several 'older folks' who live in the city that have gotten home improvements. they say they called the DEPT OF AGING....(I think that's what it's called )
And what about the building that burnt on Jay St??????????

The same folks who are criticizing the city for giving these warning citations are the same folks who claimed the city didn't do its job right inspecting the Jay Street buildings that burned. So, it is another case that the city officials are damned no matter what they do in the minds of nayboobs. The nayboobs bray like jackasses no matter what the city or town officials do. Crumbling fronts steps, stairs without handrails and a chimney in danger of falling are serious issues. The chimney could fall and kill someone. A person could fall and break a hip on those stairs that don't comply with the code. The homeowners have received warning citations. They have time to remedy it. There are a number of organizations that will help the elderly with home repairs.
