Oh no! I was out, pulled over to get out of the way for emergency vehicle, later, maybe around midnight, heard and saw the helicopter.
Do our firefighters have all the resources they need? This is not a criticism of them. I was just thinking that in 2011 or so, cutbacks were made that weren't supposed to affect service. Recently, we've seen what appears to be a spike in fires. Maybe we need to make sure we still don't need as many open firehouses, etc.
Very sad.

Very sad, but a question....

why does the capital district not have a burn unit like Westchester? It seams anytime there is a fire the injured are shipped off to the unit there. I would think that the time spent getting a burn victim to Westchester would be better spent tending to their care.

I am not a doctor nor do I play one on TV, and have never known anyone with burns that needed medical treatment, so I have not a clue about how this type of medical care is handled.

Burn units are very expensive to run and require a highly specialized staff. The number of burns requiring this high level of care is too low in most areas to keep the skills of the staff up. A handful of patients a year isn't going to be enough to keep a unit of this level functioning. You need high volume to both financially support it, but also to assure the  medical staff is up on their competency. There are about 120 burn centers in the whole country, 50-some of which are accredited. Even with the horrible year of fires that we have had, it wouldn't be enough to sustain a burn center.

(trauma centers work under the same priciple),
