Apparently, some folks have nothing better to do with their time than rehash their same old negative messages over and over again.  There really is nothing more or new to say.
Mohawk Harbor is a great project that will clean up a former industrial site and do much , to boost the economy of the City-County of Schenectady.  Can't wait for the new buildings to start going up.   The RENAISSANCE continues.

"Same old negative"

Tell us DV, come on, we DEFY you to tell us what is good, WHAT IS GOOD about land that is too contaminated to live on according to all the experrts, given the DANGEROUS HARMFUL CHEMICALS that WILL NOT BE ABLE TO BE CLEANED UP.

Are YOU going to buy one of those places to live in ?   Are YOU actually going to grow up, become a NORMAL adult, leave the nest, buy a condo there and and RISK YOUR LIFE???????    AND pay the highest taxes around??????

So again, what is GOOD, what is POSITIVE about contaminated land that will NEVER be completely be cleaned up, and MIGHT cause long term NEGATIVE health effects?????   Ah, you will NOT address that.

If I may respectfully inquire, just what is YOUR scientific definition of "clean up" and acceptable consumption of pollutants for the human body.   For instance ones consumed that will kill you over 30 years instead of 20 years is "acceptable".   If so most of us pro/con for the project may never know anyways, we may have expired by then, which may be the whole idea of posting acceptable levels by a Gov't agency.   Thanks in advance for your response.

Just some random thoughts.   Curious to know what it would entail to "clean up" the GE site.   Even something "innocent" as lawn feriliizer when it washes into rivers, sewer systems pollutes the water system.   Which is why it is reccomended not to use fertilizer by a river, water supply.   Can imagine when the ALCO land flooded in the past all that contaminated soil washed away into the Mohawk and polluted the river that much more.

The main GE plant has landfills behind it.

Landfills are a lot deeper than 2 ft.

Taking 2 feet of soil and some kind of plume redirection from the former Nott St GE and ALCO?

Because we all know that chlorinated solvents only leech 24 inches into the soil.

You probably could hammer some pipes into the ground and light the escaping gases.

Do you notice a truck in the parking lot at 3 am with a hose  suckin stuff out of  " the grund " ?

not to mention the e coli flying around everyone's bathroom every time they flush the toilet

what about botulism contamination ? one person dead today  and 20 in the hospital-

than rehash their same old negative messages over and over again.  .

Can't help it DV if the FACTS and the TRUTHS are "negative"

Same "OLD" negatives.   How about this is NEW INFORMATION.   It is new information for the TAXPYAERS WHO ARE PAYING FOR THIS!!!!!!!!!!

As we (who actually pay taxes, like we who actually have our names on the county tax rolls) are paying for this but it is kept a secret from us?

DV, explain WHY this truth never was made public.   You obviously believe that the truths about this project should be kept a big secret from the taxpayers who are paying for it.  You believe that things that will cause even more massive reduction to home values should be a secret.

DV, do you believe that prospective buyers of the condos/townhomes there should be denied their right to know that buying a residence there very well may endanger their life?    Well??????    Can you answer this question??????   What's the matter, cat got your tongue?   What's the matter, you won't answer because it's is too embarrassing to admit to the corruption of the city/co/plex/Galesi?   Do you believe that your political party should get rich over keeping secrets from prospective condo/townhouse buyers?   It's better to not tell the people the TRUTH that their life may be in danger?

DV, are YOU going to buy a condo or townhouse there?    Well?     Can you answer?   Can you answer YES or NO to your plan to buy there and risk your life?

Awe. the wittle baby boy can't answer.  Do you need a rattle to play with?

I toyed with the idea of MAYBE buying there...  New construction, pretty close to work, etc...

I didn't put a lot of thought into it as it is a couple years before it would be ready, but it was sort of in the back of my mind as it maybe being a nice place to live...  Potentially a "community" developing there.

The latest news extinguishes any remote thoughts of me purchasing.  Just way too much risk.  We're already bombarded with toxins in foods, from artificial additives, GMO's, pesticides...  Vapors...  Scares the heck out of me the thought of being exposed to that 24x7 while I am at home...

And ventilation as a solution?  Yeah I am really excited about the energy loss associated with that level of air exchanges.

While I still say the casino, long term, is unlikely to be worth it - the idea of the community (residents, shops, restaurants) was rather appealing.  No longer.

Oil slick found on river near casino site
BY KATHLEEN MOORE Gazette Reporter

Reach Gazette reporter Kathleen Moore at 395-3120, moore@dailygazette.com   or @dailymoore on Twitter.

A mysterious spill has led to oil pooling along the banks of the Mohawk River near the site of the proposed Mohawk Harbor development.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation responded to reports of oil on the water but has not yet determined its source. Wherever it came from, there’s no more oil flowing into the water, DEC officials said.

“There is no indication of an ongoing source of oil entering the river,” spokesman Tom Mailey said in a statement.

The oil stretched across the river Monday night, according to a member of the Union College crew team. The team rowed through the oil during practice and later reported it to DEC.

On Tuesday morning, a DEC spills team went to the scene and found the oil pooling downstream of the College Creek Outfall, Mailey said. DEC would make no public statement about the source of the oil.

Nearby, a construction crew was preparing the land for a harbor, a hotel and eventually a casino. Developer David Buicko, CEO of the Galesi Group, said he was certain the oil had nothing to do with construction.

“It’s not generated from our site,” he said, adding that his workers met the DEC team and determined the oil wasn’t coming from the site.

“I’m glad it wasn’t us,” Buicko said.

DEC has monitored the site in the past, before it was owned by Galesi Group, because of spills into the river. It ordered wells dug on the site in the 1990s and used them to remove hydrocarbons and test groundwater for further contaminants. But that didn’t clean up the site.

In paperwork filed during the discussion over locating a casino and other development there, DEC said some of the groundwater was contaminated with solvents. The agency developed a cleanup plan, which Galesi has been following.

Union College geology professor John Garver recalled those reports when he heard the crew team had encountered oil near the site.

“So this is one of the concerns when they start digging stuff up,” he said.

Garver, whose research focuses on the river, investigated and called the DEC spills hotline.

“It’s serious,” he said, explaining that the amount of oil on the river posed a great threat to the environment. “Anytime there’s oil on the river, it’s serious.”

But DEC termed the spill a “small sheen” of oil that will only need monitoring for now.

“DEC will continue to monitor the situation and take any actions necessary in the future,” Mailey said.

The spill seemed unusual to the crew team. Member Matt Worthington said he’d never seen such a situation in his four years on the team.

It took his boat 20 to 30 seconds to row through the oil Monday night, he said, and the team washed down the boat afterward.

They rowed Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m. and did not see any oil, he said. It was there during their next row, from 5:15 to 6:30 p.m. Monday.

“We were going at a rather slow pace,” he said. “We encountered a smell, and then we were rowing through it.”

There's a pizza shop owner on the other side of the river, who will tell you all about the contamination. Some people used to think he was crazy. Maybenot.
I seem to recall, when the project at the ALCO site was going to be that "city within a city", that many people, including most on this board, claimed the site was too contaminated for residential development. Not so, we were told at the time. Also, there was a little ol' nuclear reactor to worry about. I then saw aritcles claiming that no, there wasn't a nuclear reactor, that was urban legend. Now, the contamination and reactor are both confirmed to be what we said they were all along, FACT.
If you spend millions of dollars of taxpayer money on site cleanup, there will never be a gain to the taxpayers from the casino, as it will have reached its useful life before it pays back the costs. These things have a shelf-life.
Anyway, to reiterate, that previous concept for the site was never going to be, yet our local "experts" were all in for it, not just Lyin' Brian. It goes to show that they never have any idea what they are doing.
