Just after the city announced more of the money being forcibly taken from the financially struggling homeowners in the city in order to give more tax exemptions to the city/co/plex political crony billionaire, now the city has announced cuts to the police department.

The FACT is that crime is going UP in the city, but the city is cutting police while giving out more tax money to the billionaire Galesi.

And this comes after cutting essential snow plowing, after cutting the shoveling of city owned properties, and eliminating ice skating (even though not essential) in Central Park.

All while their cronies are tax deadbeats

of course an 'advance' is all government planning/budgeting is all about....'paying the debt forward' only pay those you sleep
with now.....

Despite some high profile violent crimes, crime is and has been trending down for some time.

RE: this cut in services, it's basically a seasonal adjustment made by management due to their being less activity during the colder months.  This has been going on, since forever.

It came to light because someone is trying to embarrass the Chief and/or will have less opportunities for overtime.  It really is a non-story.

But, Visitor, if crime is down, why is there so much overtime?   But I'm willing to see how this plays out.  Then I remember an incident sometime I think last November or October that someone videotaped and put on that Face Book, posted here too I think, I can't remember where we saw it, but some possible brawl in a street in either HH or MP and it looked like every police car in the city was there, so I wonder if that is really necessary for so many cars.

But you mention the "cuts in service" are "seasonal adjustments."  You mean plowing of streets which is not done in summer, and very little in fall or spring, pretty much limited to the winter only, but winter snow plowing is cut in winter and that is a seasonal adjustment?  The city failing to clear sidewalks on properties it owns (whether a government building or a foreclosed house or anything in between) is just a "seasonal adjustment" when it's only done in winter?   Did I read you wrong?

Nationally yes crime has been on the decline, although I'm not sure about locally here in the city, what was it last year when our city was ranked 11th for the most dangerous small city in America. Judging how many incidents occurred this winter I have a feeling this summer is going to be a nightmare.

Overtime is high for two reasons, IMO.  Unfilled positions.  And, the workload exceeds the number of budgeted officers.  More simply put, City needs more police officers; however, given the realities of the tax base - the PD will have to get the job done with the available resources.

I cannot speak to the issues of snowplowing.  I do know that summer staffing levels have historically been higher than those in the winter. Typically, the winter months are correlated with a drop in crime, although the size of that drop has diminished somewhat over time.

The main point I wanted to make was, in my opinion, this article was precipitated by an employees' sour grapes, as opposed to a real concern re: public or officer safety.

Henry - I'd be careful about those rankings - the one that was being waved around last year was based on a suspect
methodology.

Crime has been dropping nationally and locally, the rates re: various crimes have not been uniform though. Some crime rates have been reduced more so than others.  Aggravated assault has been a challenging one due to the issues of
domestic violence and how some people resolve differences.

but is it TRUE? Is it FACT?
Unfortunately, some 'truths' never see the light of day until there is a disgruntled employee.

evidently visitor knows nothing......crime is up....and even at this time of the year......have been told from the horse's  mouth.....

domestic violence on the rise....stabbings....threats......shootings.....robberies.....shoplifting... harassment....crime doesn't end or do down because

of the season..perps are getting to the point it doesn't matter......they dress warmer.....

so along with the cover-up for this area....the casino is what counts....just wait til that gets here......maybe that's where they will use the 2 extra cops...and

then some......it will be a nightmare because of the crime...just like the area....all casinos don't report drime....after all that would mean a decline in  $$$$

.

Police Union sez so.

crime spreading out to share the pain....'consolidation' of crime cost....spread out the perps...

to nisky
to rotterdam
to glenville
to scotia

THAT'S what consolidation will get you....no savings...just a nice spread of crime...like butter on toast
