ROTTERDAM, N.Y. -- State police say a chase that started on the Northway Friday night ended when a teenager was shot after wielding a sword.

"It's pretty crazy," said Nick Patel, describing his Friday night.

He spent it working at his dad's liquor store. A man came in and took a bottle of vodka from the front of Smith's Colonie Liquor Store. Patel went after the man but quickly stopped in his tracks.

"He turns around, and he's got a big three-feet or four-foot tall sword. And, he says you want the bottle back or you want to die?"

Nick called the police, and it turned out that the man was already wanted by police. They say 19-year-old Michael Messina had been involved in a police chase shortly before arriving at the store. They say a pursuit started after he threw an object at a trooper conducting a traffic stop on the Northway around 6:40 p.m.

"The speed of the pursuit reached 100 miles per hour, and during the pursuit, he continued to throw things at the pursuing police car," said New York State Police Captain Scott Coburn.

Shortly after leaving the liquor store, police say Messina called Colonie police, claiming he had an AK-47 and a handgun and wanted to kill police. Another chase ensued, lasting more than half an hour.

"At approximately 8 p.m., the stinger deflation advice is deployed, and the front tires of the vehicle become deflated, causing him to pull over I-87," said Coburn.

State police say Messina then got out of the car with his sword, starting a foot chase with police. He was then shot once by a trooper in his stomach.

"It was scary. But, I'm glad the police have everything under control now and that everything is done, hopefully," said Patel.

sure....watching how fast AND how low he was flying as he went by us near the crosstown was both the how and why... would love to know what they actually were{speed and height}...

but remember the pendulum swings in both directions....and yes 'loosie legislation' gets people killed who would have other
wise not been....it also gets people labeled as criminals for no other good reason than the protection of 'the state' and
all it's leashes/handlers/$$..............

yes, people are culpable in their own deaths at times, just like the NYPD said....culpable means more than one are
involved....but you will never hear the state standing up to say "we were wrong".......other wise insurance companies/lawyers
politicians/police companies etc etc would not have validation across the board in what/how they operate......
