twhenever you have a rifle or shotgun.....IN THE TRUNK IT GOES.......that's common sense

The cop is an idiot and deserves to be fired.

That being said, the dope who left a weapon in the back of his vehicle in plain sight isn't much brighter.

Throw a blanket over it then. Don't leave a weapon unattended in plain sight so an equally mental midget can break in and steal it. If you leave unattended guns in your truck gun rack, then you're an idiot also.

might be you missed the point of my post about the type car....i was not very clear

as per original post..."deputies who had spotted a rifle in the back seat and wanted to search the car"

as per gazette story..."during a roadside interview resulting from a suspicious vehicle complaint in the town of Halfmoon"

not enough info yet as to why this happened...but hopefully we will find out...

***but cant ANY gun under a blanket in a car qualify as a concealed weapon?***

My point is that it's totally irresponsible to leave any weapon unattended in plain view. Ever!!

Here's a hypothetical for you. You go through all the bullshit you have to go through to buy a gun. Finally you walk out of your favorite gun store with your new baby and throw it in the back seat of your car. On the way home you stop at the grocery store to pick up a couple of things, and when you get back to your car you're horrified to find your windows broken and your new weapon is gone. You report it missing and hope for the best. You were only in the store 5 minutes.

Three weeks later the police contact you to let you know they've recovered your weapon. It was used in that armed robbery and homicide that you saw reported on the news. The two seventeen year olds who stole it are in jail for the crimes.

All I'm saying is responsible gun owners wouldn't leave that weapon in a position to be stolen.

To be clear, I have no problem with people owning guns. In fact I encourage it. I do take issue with the irresponsible gun owners. And to parrot my original post the cop is/was a jerk and should be fired. Today!!

I have no idea. I'm sure some zealous cop/DA would try to use that as a case, but as far as the law and it's interpretation, I couldn't tell you. Thankfully I'm not an attorney.

Glans was the subject of a $60 million lawsuit filed against both the county and the town of Wilton after he lost control of his patrol car and crashed into Douglas H. McEachron’s car in March 1996. Glans was driving at more than 60 mph at the time of the collision, three times the local speed limit. McEachron, a father of six, suffered a traumatic brain injury and lost his sight. One of his children was appointed as his legal guardian following the crash.

The Albany Times-Union reported in 1999 that the city and the county agreed to pay a $6 million settlement to McEachron’s family. Though a jury found Glans to be negligent, he was not required to pay any part of the settlement.

“If Doug had been in the sheriff’s deputy’s shoes, Doug would have been in prison now,” McEachron’s girlfriend, Melinda Dingley, said at the time.

No one seems concerned about the second cop.

Why was he not suspended as well.

He was an accomplice.

He took no action when the cop stepped over the line.

The chief should have announced that both cops were suspended without pay pending termination and charges.

Both of their names should have been immediately disclosed.

I can only hope that when his girls are in their late teens and early 20's they will be detained by a nice friendly officer of the law and get treated with the same respect daddy treats people when on the job.

Not that it matters if he removed his facebook page, his home address is now being spread online, that I won't post

re: the silly question as to whether the police search random cars for guns - my guess would be that some citizen saw it and became concerned.  at any rate, it's not that important.  that could have been cleared up with a few reasonable questions.

re: arrogance and attitude versus assault and battery - cherry picking comments to make straw man argument. as I listed imprisonment as a consequence, which carries with it the implication of criminality.

and it's definitely worth some jail time.

on a side note, I see no reason to post his children's or wife's picture - they can't help it the man of their house is a creep.

and I wouldn't criticize the person leaving the gun back there - it was a mistake, error in judgement which should have been corrected by a polite & professional conversation.

the accident is extremely disturbing and you have to wonder what else is out there.  would not be surprised to see negligent retention, failure to supervise as part of the litigation.  this is definitely a 7 figure lawsuit.
