Taxpayers who can't afford to maintain their homes are now paying for demolition of houses that others lost because they couldn't afford to pay the taxes of the millionaires downtown.

So now, fewer people are in the city paying the taxes of downtown and now they have to pay for the demolition AND cover the taxes that would have been collected on these houses if not for the dems taking their homes for back taxes

And why is the cheerleader not addressing the falling tax base?

They got some asinine study from somewhere that goes against any urban planning tenets by anyone anywhere who actually knows anything about urban planning, and they decided that Schenectady had "too many houses" and that knocking down houses on residential streets to "thin out" the housing stock is desirable. I'd go into all the ways this is wrong, and how they don't mind contradicting their own stupid ideas whenever they feel like it, but I get too tired. A bunch of moronic, pompous, greedy, entitled, and in some cases crooked and drunken half-wits they are.

Let me see if I have this right. As I've perused these pages, I'm always reading about the blight in the City and how something needs to be done with these buildings. Yet when something is done you all complain about that! And yeah, the money for the demolitions is federal (taxpayer) money, which means ALL the taxpayers in this country are contributing to the demolition here. So maybe someone with a better head for math than I could break down what it's actually costing each taxpayer in the city to tear these buildings down.

You can't have it both ways folks.

And here's a bold prediction. Come the day after election day there will still be a Democratic controlled council, mayor and county legislature. Nothing will change. Why? Because folks like "Brad the Realtor" are real good at pointing out the faults, but total dweebs when it comes to organizing and getting anything done.

But you keep on posting folks. It gives me a terrific laugh to start my day.

If McCarthy and his DEMS had lowered the property taxes property owners would still be able to stay and own their homes. But now the City has to take out a LOAN to pay to knock down the houses. McCarthy could of easily given these houses to investors but he doesn't want to have anything to do with real estate investors only if their name is GALESI and RUSH CASINO. Giving away the houses to real estate investors would of cost the city zero dollars no loan needed to knock down the houses. McCarthy speaks of the Steward place tax exemption by Union College as the cause for higher taxes but he is a hypocrit to his own tax payer giveway of $500,000 to the Galesi Group for the former DSS building on Nott. GALESI OWNS 60 ACRES OF LAND AT ALCO WHICH THEY DON'T PAY ANY TAXES ON! NOW MCCARTHY WANTS TO TEAM UP WITH A BILLIONAIRE CASINO DEVELOPER RUSH CASINO TO BUILD A TAX PAYER FUNDED CASINO. # HYPOCRIT MAYOR

Alva stated he is not a taxpayer (believe he said he rents), so he doesn't understand these crippling taxes.

Perhaps Alva can explain why the taxpayers should be paying for the demo instead of the owner of the building--either from his own pocket OR his liability insurance.

Just like Popolizio, the building he had on the corner of McClellan & Eastern that had a fire (and a tenant was found burned to death a week or so later).  The DEMs took that property down AT TAXPAYER expense because Popolizio was in this "uh uh, oh, I thought" mode about insurance.   Now how is it the DEMS REFUSED to go after Popolizio's assets rather than force the taxpayers to pay for the demo?   Why is it that Popolizio still lives in his posh mansion in Nisky?

And um, Alva YOU ARE WRONG about it being "federal taxpayer" money.   The money is a LOAN which must be paid back to the federal government  by the taxpayers of the CITY of Schenectady!!!!!!!!!!    And if you get your jollies and state that the comments made on these boards give you a laugh every day, you must be on drugs.  The mis-use of tax dollars is a serious issue, increasing taxes on homeowners in the city after the city exempts millionaires and billionaires from paying taxes, such that taxes become the highest around AND the city of Schenectady is the SECOND HIGHEST OVERASSESSED municipality in the WHOLE STATE OF NY is NOT something to laugh and joke about.  Long time hard working taxpaying homeowners are losing their homes thanks to the city exempting the millionaire property owners downtown and GE from having to pay property and school taxes.

So Alva, you get a good laugh reading that hard working homeowners are losing their homes?   Anyone who gets a laugh out of that is SICK SICK SICK

Here's the rub...and why people get upset... Downtown and the city neighborhoods are in the same jurisdiction but treated totally different.
When a building is modded or demolished downtown, there is already a plan to put something in the place. When they are demolished in the neighborhoods, its just assumed something will sprout up in its place...the only thing that will sprout up is weeds in the spring and the occasional mattress or TV that someone dumps in the empty lot.

It's interesting McCheese waited until two weeks before election day to get this started...I'm sure it's a coincidence though...
Nothing will change in Schenectady on Election night mainly because the people that wanted change have given up and fled the city...either by abandoning property, renting it or if they find a sucker, selling it...

The terrific laugh to my day was McCheese saying on the news last night that Schenectady will be the  model for urban revitalization for the entire state..that gave me more laughs than the CBS Monday night line up.

The objectionable part is the 3 million dollar loan that was not in the budget.

These guys are experts at getting around the tax cap and the limits of the approved budgets.

Ok, I can agree with that. My original point was more about the complaints if nothing/something is/isn't done. I'm tickled that the building on Broadway is gone, and don't care much where the money came from to do it. Heck, if I had had the cash I would have offered to tear it down myself.

I agree with you 100%!!!

and this thread is about DEMOLISHING BLIGHT.......not downtown.

AND.....many of these buildings were owned by downstate slumlords....who took their money and ran!!!
Perhaps some were folks who 'just walked away' due to high taxation.
and since we don't have the STATISTICAL FACTS on 'who owned what'............all we know is they are coming down with tax money.

Let us also remember that this money would have NEVER been given to Schenectady if reps were in control.

If the reps controlled the city and if UP-CHUCK was a rep.....the money would still be given to Schenectady...the end result would have been THE SAME!!!

NOW....with that said.....was this a political move with political motivation and political positioning?..........OF COURSE IT WAS!!!!DUH!

And YES....the dems will still be in control after election day!!

where will the squatters live now?

So what are you going to do about this 'problem'?
The city folk aren't concerned since all you hear at the city council meetings are crickets.
