None of your business if and when I carry a concealed firearm. And, why would someone no longer in law enforcement be wearing a  uniform?  But, you probably didn't bother to read the entire post - just saw my user name and reflexively came running to post...

again, tiresome

Madame X - Whenever I go to the park, I am in civilian clothes and am no longer in law enforcement.  I cover a good part of the park too.

No, I read the post.  You said you go to the park in civilian clothes and am no longer in law enforcement.  It probably would have been clearer if you said something like 'I am in civilian clothes, since I am retired from law enforcement'.

As a former or off duty law enforcement agent, I was just curious if you carried a firearm into central park.  If the mundanes were able to conceal a firearm while in the park, they may feel safe in the park too.  But since most cannot obtain a handgun permit, they are left to enter the park without personal protection.

I'm guessing since you spent most of your adult life having the privilege to carry a hand gun on and off duty, you are incapable of understanding what it is like to feel vulnerable in a city with high crime.

Because you cant carry a gun- maybe you could tell us what it is like to feel  ' vulnerable '.

I go to the park at least once a week.  While you do find some discarded cups and other fast food trash - I have never seen any syringes and the Park is generally in good shape. That includes the walking and bike trails.

I have found syringes in the past, and some sketchy looking "set ups" in the woods before. I don't feel comfortable outside of the rose garden and play ground area. The park isn't as bad as some may say, but it's not the gem it used to be either.

3rd grade...Based on your writing composition...It appears that is the year you graduated from school.

Yes, composition!

Out of curiosity...Do you go plain clothed armed or unarmed?  I remember being at a school function a few years ago, and an off duty cop wasn't shy to admit that he was armed inside the school.  I wonder if it common for off duty police to carry while in plain clothes.

I found a syringe and a burnt cap on one of the benches in the park while metal detecting, not to mention hundreds of blunt wrappers and drug bags around the area. I made a post awhile back and posted pictures of the shell casings I found out there including gun parts. I stopped going there to detect because basically the area is a landfill, you would be amazed at what you are walking over in that park.

I don't care if people do drugs...go ahead...be my guest.....BUT DAMN IT! CLEAN UP AFTER YOURSELF!

maybe we could put in sharps containers and special garbage containers specifically for them....I mean really.....we're losing

Visitor, what I mean is that grown men are looked at as authority figures by the problem children in the park, who tend to be middle-school aged kids in groups. You have a deterrent effect just by being there.
Yeah, right, senders, I meant a police state. Of course I did.
All public places can have problems arise, in cities middle-school aged kids can get places on foot, that's all. Years ago, parks used to have a thing called attendants. Police do patrol the park, as they should, but in warmer weather someone needs to be there to keep an eye on things.
Central Park was never really a gem, imo. For a brief period of time, we threw money at it, at the expense of our other parks that were let go, but the
only real difference between then and now is that the leaves and litter in the center of the park aren't cleaned up frequently enough. Parts of the park are cleaner than they were back when they had that ill-considered fancy restaurant there. It's just a park.

I still think that Central Park is a "gem."  Not saying that it doesn't need some cleaning up but it does have a lot of amenities that other communities would love to have (but don't) and it has great potential.  Personally, I think that the city park system is better than the park system in Rotterdam.  I have more opinions on that subject but will hold off until the election year - next year to voice those.

Sounds like someone is hinting at a possible political run next year!

Wonder how the "spending time in the parks" in yesterdays rain and cold, and today's and bitter winds worked out.

Optimists close their eyes and pretend problems are non existent.
Better to have open eyes, see the truths, acknowledge the negatives, and
speak up for the people rather than the politicos and their rich cronies.

I have to avoid you because you are an annoying and unpleasant person to deal with, constantly looking to argue with rarely any unique insight.

"and am no longer in law enforcement" - grammar issues aside, what else could that possibly mean?

And to suggest that someone who has dealt with countless crime victims would not understand what it is like to be vulnerable, unarmed citizen  is just stupid.  I dealt with vulnerable victims every day of my career.

Madame X - Yes, I can see where that might help.

Mike Christine - I have a dog, so regardless of the weather - I am compelled to walk outside for between 1.5 -2 hours a day. Compared to last  winter, yesterday was nothing.
