The prevalence of childhood hunger is greater in urban areas because of the higher population density than in rural areas. Local food banks in urban areas struggle to keep up with demand, even from families who have employed family members. Often the need is not covered by wages. Locally, teachers in one district are committed to making a difference.
Recognizing that more of the students in Schenectady are struggling with poverty, the Schenectady Federation of Teachers has made a commitment to raise $7,500 over three years to participate in the Regional Food Bank of Northeast New York backpack program. Each weekend, students in need are supplied with backpacks filled with food.
“We have a really high-needs population,” said Juliet Benaquisto, SFT president. She said there are families in need of food who “house surf”, live in motel in shelters, or with friends. The situation worsened in the past few years as the economy tanked.
The district, where 80% of the students qualify for free or reduced priced lunches and breakfasts, chose Van Corlaer Elementary school for the backpack program. The school, housing regular and integrated teaching classes, has over 400 students in grades 1-6. While the majority of the students are neighborhood residents, many come from other areas of Schenectady for specialized education programs meeting their educational needs.
To help raise money for the program, the local union is raising money through dress down days, where staff members donate money to dress in jeans on occasion.
Additional organizations sponsoring the backpacks program in the district include GE Global Research (Keane Elementary), and Concerned for the Hungry (Lincoln Elementary). Teachers refer students based on need. Staff filling the backpacks, which go home with students on Friday, include school nurses, teachers, and social workers. In many districts around the country, the backpack program is overseen by volunteers, often PTA members.

Not sure what collectivist philosophy it is exactly. I tend to believe it's more toward fascism. In any case, fascism, socialism, or communism, you are still a subject of the state from birth.
What about pride???? Giving kids free bags of food to bring home kills pride....
Pride is a trait of self reliance and independence. The state can't foster that type of mass psychology. Fear and dependance are the traits Americans must have. It keeps the collective herd scared and controllable.

The sad truth is that the rents are so high (in order to pay the high taxes) and homeowners have no money left after paying the taxes. No money to feed their children.
That's because the dems are hiking taxes to cover all the taxes their rich political cronies do not have to pay, but the financially struggling homeowners are forced to pay under threat of losing their home.
Anyone have any EVIDENCE to show that the taxes that homeowners pay is not high and going higher? Any one have any EVIDENCE to product to show that the dem leaders in the city and county are actually lowering taxes?
Optimists close their eyes and pretend problems are non existent. Better to have open eyes, see the truths, acknowledge the negatives, and speak up for the people rather than the politicos and their rich cronies.

Funny, there's money to put up an UNNECESSARY modern digital sign that is NOT in keeping with a historic theater. But there is no money for NECESSARY expenses like food for children.
Wonder what this board's ALLEGED "Catholic outreach worker" thinks about the spending of tax money on an UNECESSARY sign while parents have no money for NECESSARY food for their children. Of course, the alleged Catholic won't address the FACT that food for children is more important than a stupid digital sign.

so is the government saying that there are no jobs, taxes are too high so folks can't AFFORD food?

is the government saying that these folks are stupid, dumb, uneducated drug addicts that have no skills to support themselves (except to procreate)?

Parens Patriae [Latin, Parent of the country.] A doctrine that grants the inherent power and authority of the state to protect persons who are legally unable to act on their own behalf.
The parens patriae doctrine has its roots in English Common Law. In feudal times various obligations and powers, collectively referred to as the "royal prerogative," were reserved to the king. The king exercised these functions in his role of father of the country.
In the United States, the parens patriae doctrine has had its greatest application in the treatment of children, mentally ill persons, and other individuals who are legally incompetent to manage their affairs. The state is the supreme guardian of all children within its jurisdiction, and state courts have the inherent power to intervene to protect the best interests of children whose welfare is jeopardized by controversies between parents. This inherent power is generally supplemented by legislative acts that define the scope of child protection in a state.
The state, acting as parens patriae, can make decisions regarding mental health treatment on behalf of one who is mentally incompetent to make the decision on his or her own behalf, but the extent of the state's intrusion is limited to reasonable and necessary treatment.

Yep DV knows it was HIM that I was talking to. But of course, he will NEVER produce a shred of EVIDENCR that the wild uncontrolled spending on downtown is returning a dividend for the homeowners. That is the truth that I speak, and DV knows it, DV knows there is not a shred of evidence that homeowners and their families are getting something in return for their tax dollars, so he can't post evidence and he will not even remotely carry on a discussion about it. I can discuss the topic. I cant discuss and point out how things are getting worse, how the tax base is falling massively, but DV will NOT discusss and state how homeowners are better off now.
