I thought I'd post this in case anyone might be interested. A group of folks are trying to revive neighborhood watches in Rotterdam. Seems like it's a good idea to me. It shows folks are taking more of an interest in what's going on here and are actually doing something. It also seems that many of the folks involved are of a much younger demographic, maybe late 30's early to mid 40's (I'm just guessing here folks), and becoming very vocal in "taking back our town". Many of the same people who post on other Rotterdam FB pages.

then let ROTTENdam lower the cops wages/benefits.....since the residents are doing some of their work...yes?
remember...the cops that break the arms of disabled kids who won't get off the bus?

Ya, cause no criminals use social media to case their targets .. This just makes it easier for them to see where the "watch" communities are, where theyre patrolling any particular night, and find easier targets. Whoever set this up wasn't too bright, IMHO

I think you're missing the point. I would much rather see folks becoming pro-active, than sitting around pissing and moaning about how they're being victimized. You have to start somewhere. And if the criminals do read social media and then avoid the areas with "watches", and move to another area, well didn't the one "watch" that was set up accomplish what they set out to do? Then it would be incumbent upon the next neighborhood to get involved. And if each neighborhood in turn were to answer the "call to arms", the criminals who you suggest "use social media" to "case their targets" would see that the entire town is under "citizen watch" and avoid these areas.
Once again, to me this is a positive step in the right direction. At least somebody's trying.
The bigger question for me would be how committed are folks to be involved in "Neighborhood watches"? Will they keep it up, or will the interest and enthusiasm diminish with time?

The police get the job done....more than you bloggers think.....BUT......shoot first ...ask questions later seems to be the motto in America these days.
The problem is the police DON'T handle everything. Nor can they patrol every square inch of town all the time. I read all the time of wanting to eliminate or down size the dept. in town. Then what? You can't have it both ways. That's why it's important to be aware of what's going on in your neighborhood. And I don't think anyone in support of Neighborhood Watches is in favor of vigilantism. They're merely there to as the term implies "watch their neighborhoods" and REPORT suspicious activity. What's wrong with that?

I can give an example of how being watchful and aware of your neighborhood works. From my apartment I have a good view of the parking lot. I know most of the the people that live here, and their vehicles. There have been occasions over the years where I have seen strangers in the lot either using or selling drugs. I have notified the RPD on these occasions, and within minutes they have shown up to catch the culprits in the act. This is what I'm talking about.

the zimmerman issue happened in a gated community....is Rotterdam a gated community?
living in a gated community automatically makes folks feel 'unsafe'.....why a gated community? because there are issues.....
schenectady uses 'camera gates'......

The overwhelming majority of gated communities are very safe.
As for Neighborhood Watch, I think it is a great idea. People should know their neighbors and keep an eye out for one another.
