The City of Schenectady has 70 surveillance cameras to survey an 11 sq mile city.  That is on average 1 camera for every .15 miles.  It is virtually an open air prison.  Who in their right mind would travel into such a shithole that has to monitor their population so aggressively?  I wonder if visitors hometown has a camera located every tenth of a mile?

SCHENECTADY — The city has received federal homeland security money to increase its inventory of street cameras to almost 70.

When looking to buy a house to raise a family, the one selling point I look for is "are there enough police surveillance cameras in my neighborhood?".  Nothing fosters a sense of community like 24-7 police surveillance.  I'm surprised the houses in Schenectady aren't selling like hot cakes!  Knowing you are always under the watchful eye of the police should be a real plus for realators when selling to potential buyers.

Just to put that in perspective, that is over 6 cameras per square mile.

So many cameras is indicative of a city of ever increasing crime


But then, I would say that Schenectady having so many cameras is because they cannot afford to have enough police to take care of the every increasing crime, because the city leaders are spending the taxpayers money on the leaders' precious downtown--home of their millionaire benefactors of all the kickbacks in exchange for exempting the rich from paying taxes.

Quite obvious that with all the good people fleeing the city and the massive increase in abandoned and boarded up homes (poof of ghost town), so many criminals hiding in these houses and tax dollars spent on downtown instead of police for the neighborhoods where the taxpayers live, this is the city's ccheap method to make people THINK that the city is taking care of crime.

He's watching us on cameras, internet, cell phones, and when you buy those scary guns.

Open air prison?  You're ridiculous.  Those cameras are in neighborhoods due to crime concerns.  The people in those neighborhoods want the cameras there..  They want the cameras in their neighborhoods, but, you don't want them so they should not be there?  What business is it of yours whether people want and have surveillance cameras in their communities? When the police go to neighborhood association meetings - the residents often ask - when can we get cameras in our neighborhood.  

I don't have cameras in my community because the issues of street crime are not that high.  If the crime issues were the same, I would welcome the cameras.

How is a camera, positioned to deter and capture crimes, and that does not permanently retain the images of anyone if films = a prison.

And, the cameras are in the neighborhoods with the most criem, a few are in the downtown area.

funny...............but the folks we talk to say they DO call the cops when there's a crime in their neighborhood....but FIRST it takes forever to talk to anyone...they get an answering machine...OMG!!! SECOND....the cops never come unless there is a shooting and there's a bleeding body on the ground!!!

They are already paying for COPS....and now cameras???? Great selling point!!!

The cameras happen to be in the neighborhoods with not only the most crime, but the highest rate of poverty.  No correlation though.  You happen to be in a neighborhood which is relatively affluent in comparison, and so it's been decided that the low levels if street crime does not justify surveillance.

The entire city is under surveillance, the entire population is being watched.  15 years of Metroplex and renaissance and the progress led to mass surveillance.

You said communities expressed interest in cameras in certain neighborhoods, yet the entire city is under surveillance.  Six cameras per square mile.  The only people that would move into that type of surveillance would be those that are accustom to it - criminals.    

How much money is devoted to stopping crime with these flat statistics?

When do you anticipate that the crime levels will be reduced to a level to where the surveillance cameras will be taken down?(my prediction - never)

The residents in those neighborhoods want less potholes and better plowed roads too.  They don't seem to get those things.
