SCHENECTADY - Police said a 14-year-old boy pointed a toy gun at them and then ran off with the replica that officers were convinced was an actual firearm.
The incident happened late Friday on Craig Street. Police said the boy and several others were standing outside a home on the 700 block when the teen turned toward the police cruiser and pointed the gun at the vehicle.
The teen ran into a nearby home and was taken into custody as he tried to slip out another door, police said.
Police said the weapon was a CO2 air gun that was a replica of a Smith & Wesson M&P .45-caliber handgun that looked so realistic police thought it was authentic until they tried to "render it safe."
The teen will face charges in Family Court. He was charged with menacing and criminal possession of a weapon. The charges are misdemeanors.

...but if the cop blew the child's head off because he was in possession of a toy gun and frightened state agents, it would have be a reasonable response, and that officer would get a promotion. Unfortunately, all the officers could do is give a 14 year old a criminal record.
Parents must register toy guns. The state needs to know which households possess non lethal toy guns. For public safety of course.
Smarten up kids, don't point anything which looks like a gun at police, people have been killed for pulling out their cell phones or wallets because officers jumped the gun. In this case the kid is lucky he wasn't lit up like the 4th of July for his stupidity and it would have been justified in my book.

Sad...cops and robbers, cowboys and Indians, and army were played when I was a kid. It's sad that the sight of a gun, adults suspect the child to be a killer. My nephew goes to a local suburban school, and he liked to play hunting on the playground with his friend, using little twigs and their imagination. And the monitors on the playground make him put the twigs down because they are pretending they are hunting guns. It is truly and insane world when the adults irrational fears are projected onto a child's imagination.

We all probably grew up playing those games and had toy guns that looked very real, although even back then we never pointed them at the police or people not knowing what we were up to. Times have changed and not for the better
