As for the cost - when is the last time you had major work (or even minor work) done around your house? Prices have gone up all over the place.

And when was the time you had major work done around your house?   Oh yeah, that's write, you have NEVER owned a house, proof positive you would have no idea on prices.

But DV sure loves to tell lies.

Check this out.   He claims that HE is a client.   He writes praise for a project that doesn't even exist.   And then he clicks the like button on his own message    ROFL

2nd - parks and other city properties need to be maintained .. you folks wouldn't understand the concept of being good stewards and maintaining our communities infrastructure --- which includes parks.

Yes, parks need to maintained, but that is what the purpose of property taxes.   Homeowners in the city pay taxes to the city for THE CITY to maintain the parks.

But the city is taking the taxpayers money and giving to millionaires downtown and the parks are being ignored.   That is MISUSE of the taxpayers money.

People would be happy to help fix up their parks IF the city was really having financial problems through no fault of its own.

But the city is having financial problems because the city has NOT been property spending the taxpayers money.   Instead of spending the tax money on necessary things, the things that taxes are supposed to pay for (roads, parks, plowing, etc), the city is spending in millionaires downtown.   The city is taking the taxes from the homeowners and really, spending it to demolish a building owned by multibillionaire Galesi?

DV NEVER will state why he supports poor homeowners in the city paying to demolish a building owned by a billionaire.

The city has financial problems because it is spending the tax money on downtown  and that spending is causing a MASSIVE REDUCTION to the city's tax base, and causing property values to fall, and people to leave the city, abandoning their houses, leaving the city an increased number of properties it has to take ownership to which increases the responsibility on the city, but the city STILL chooses to NOT maintain these properties.   Since homeowners could not afford to pay the taxes of the millionaires downtown, the city took their homes, then the city chooses to not maintain these properties in the neighborhoods, instead the city dems choose to continue to spend money downtown instead of on necessities like the blighted properties, roads, and parks.

And now DV is claiming that the residents of the city should to the work to take care of the parks instead of the city crews!

lol!! see it was forgotten....if you google orchard street then go to satillite view...  close to 3rd ave....you can see where the basketball court or whats left of it still is....the swing sets are skeletons that havent seen swings or chains in a long long time

it has huge potential and really is a nice place.....but needs to be remembered by city hall

It seems others feel the same as you.

I stopped by the Orchard St park today to have a look around and what I found was that the park is being cleaned up and has been actively been worked on by the Mont Pleasant Neighborhood Association. I spoke with the president of the association, Sharron-Linn Schmidt, who informed me that they removed 8 dumpsters of vines that covered all the fences on the Orchard St side. they have painted the swingsets, the lines on the basketball court and the backstops on the courts too. the city came and took out trees that had fallen on the fences surrounding the park and Sharrron said that the mayor has been working to help them fix the park up. The entrance to Second Ave has been cleared of overgrowth and they are planning on putting an archway on 2nd Ave to dress up the entrance. The other entrances are going to be addressed as well. The place looked great. Nice and clean, kids playing basketball and they were having a signup event for the  Schenectady Basketball Club who are trying to hold   basketball events at all the city parks.

Here is the announcement for the event:

Free Cook-Out and Co-Ed Basketball Sign-Ups for all Schenectady K-8 Kids & Families on Saturday, July 5th 11 A.M. – 1:30 P.M. at Orchard Park. For more information, please contact Oron Tucker, President, Schenectady Basketball Club, Inc. at 518-878-6177

Coaches will be available for the Basketball Clinic & Scrimmage (First game night: Monday, July 9th at 4 p.m.)

Directions to Orchard Park: Crane St. to Third Ave., right on Orchard St., take first right down driveway across from the Fire Station #3 parking lot.

Orchard Park volunteer: Sharron-Linn Schmidt, Pres., Mont Pleasant Neighborhood Association, 518-393-2116 or by E-mail Slivinglife8@gmail.com

If you look closely above, in the shadow, there are 2 kids standing by the 2nd Ave entrance.

The woman on the right is Sharron, the President, the man is Oron Tucker of the Schenectady Basketball Club and the other 2 I don't remember their names, but they are members of the Association too. I was told by Sharron that there names were on the association website, but I have had no luck finding the site.

but its in walking distance for him

Actually it isn't from his new digs. Wasted is the right word. No one uses that park which has become a feeding center and community garden. Northside like every City
neighborhood is imploding under the weight of DEM featherbedding and overtaxation. Schenectady remains the highest taxed local City with the 2nd worst schools. Thank God for
Albany.

Bottomline -
Public parks are necessary to maintain the quality of life in a community for ALL residents.

NO THEY ARE NOT!!!! All communities need is for their 'powers that be' provide a safe environment, good performing schools, low taxes and private businesses will provide the jobs. People don't move to a community because of their PARKS!!!! OMG!!!

Did anyone look in people's back yards lately!! Most...not all....but most have picnic tables, grills, swing sets and swimming pools of some kind. Not to mention the school playgrounds and tennis courts available which we are ALREADY paying for!

Parks are NOT 'NEEDED'. They are created only 'after' a community becomes fiscally healthy with excess revenue to throw away!!

You and your nayboob buddies are just plain ignorant damn fools if you don't think that people don't inquire about parks when deciding what communities to live in.

Not all people can afford picnic tables, grills, swimming pools and swing sets in their back yards.  But of course, you folks are narrow minded jack a** bigots who couldn't give a sh*t about people who are less fortunate than you.

A good investment would be to create a better runoff or drain system for that park, that ground becomes like a marsh after a heavy rain and after every winter thaw, you will literally start to sink into the ground it gets that bad.

They demonstrated that the proximate effect is substantial up to 500-600 feet (typically three blocks). In the case of community sized parks over (say) 30 acres, the effect may be measurable out to 1500 feet, but 75% of the premium value generally occurs within the 500-600 foot zone. The studies suggested that a positive impact of 20% on property values abutting or fronting a passive park area is a reasonable point of departure for estimating the magnitude of the impact of parks on property values. A series of studies done in New York City reported similar positive impacts emerged when substantial capital investment was made in renovating existing parks, which had deteriorated (Ernst & Young 2003).

This suggested that if other variables were held constant, the average value of properties adjacent to the greenbelt was 32% higher than those located 3,200 walking feet away (Correll, Lillydahl and Stingell, 197. A detailed review of all of them is available elsewhere (Crompton 2004).

from the same study where the above were quoted:
"The conclusion is that a strategy of conserving parks and open space is not contrary to a community’s economic health, but rather it is an integral part of it."

Yep, you said it DV!!!!!    People in Schenectady CANNOT AFFORD their own picnic tables, pools, swing sets, etc. because they are paying for the downtown "playground" of the multimillionaires.   And downtown has no picnic tables, swing sets, swimming pools or grills!

But the YOUR BUDDY DEMS in the city REFUSE to have a beach party in a location with picnic tables, grills, swing sets and swimming pools.    Leave it to YOUR BUDDY DEMS to come up with the STUPID idea of a taxpayer funded "beach party on asphalt."

We all that you will NOT address this, but a beach party is NOT held on asphalt.  NORMAL people know that a beach party is held by water.   Downtown has no water, DUH.   Central Park has two bodies of water, water for swimming, picnic tables, grills, trees.

We all know that YOU, DV, will NOT address this, but a beach party is something on which people put beach towels down on the ground and YOUR DEMS think that it's appropriate to put a beach towel down on the asphalt on State St rather than Central Park.

Because YOUR BUDDY DEMS DO NOT CARE about the parks.

And you are cheering for the wild uncontrolled spending of the dems on downtown instead of the parks (Central Park no longer has anything in the winter, no clearing off the lakes, no ice skaing, no hot cocoa in the casino, no lights at night with music for ice skating.

Proof that you do NOT come into the city because you are TOTALLY CLUELESS when it comes to the parks.    As a so called Catholic and the "outreach" person in a Catholic church outside the city (Niskayuna), a wealthy town, you don't even go into the park to feed the children of the financially struggling homeowners who are paying the taxes of the millionaire political cronies of your buddy dems.

And again, PROOF that YOUR BUDDY DEMS do NOT pay attention to parks is by YOUR OWN WORDS that people allegedly inquire about parks when choosing where to live.  You DO know that people are NOT buying houses IN the city, probably because they know the city is NOT spending money on parks because they are STEALING from the taxpayers to give the money to their multimillionaire buddies downtown.   And all the spending on downtown is NOT providing ANY return for the homeowners and their neighborhoods.   And YOUR LACK of providing any evidence to the contrary proves that you agree with me 1,000%

I can agree with bumble that parks are NOT a necessity of life.  Police and fire is more of a necessity.  Since the city is on sewer then maintaining the sewers is more important than a park   Since the city has public water, that is more necessity than a park.   Having adequate storm drains is a necessity while a park is NOT a necessity.  Obviously DV does not know that when their is a heavy rain and peoples' basements get flooded because the city is spending money on their millionaires downtown instead of maintaining storm drains, that the homeowners must pay for replacing furnaces, how water heaters, laundry appliances, and repairs to the cellar out of their of their own savings.   Insurance does not pay (there have been tons of newspaper articles about homeowners in the who incurred thousands in damages because the city is not maintaining the drains and the homeowners insurance will not pay nor will the city pay even though the city is responsible.   Must be DV's stupidity that he lost his insurance license.

But people do NOT NEED a swimming pool, picnic table, grill or swingset.  Want to get wet? Get in your bathtub.  Need a table to eat on, most people have a kitchen table or TV trays.  A grill, most everyone has a stove.   A swingset, well why do people NEED a swingset?  For children to play?   How did children play before swingsets?
