Price Chopper is shedding 80 positions within the company, however they say it's not going to affect shoppers. In a release on their website, Jerry Golub, president and CEO, states that the positions being eliminated are all on the corporate and include management, field, clerical and administrative support. Those eliminated will be offered severance packages as well as outplacement services. Golub stresses that health care costs, rising fuel, as well as the need to stay competitive with the introduction of new stores in the area. Price Chopper employees more than 22,000 people, "Despite the difficulty of the decisions implemented today, we are very optimistic about the future of our company and ready to face the challenges that lie ahead. Though painful, these actions serve to better position Price Chopper as we move forward, both strategically and competitively." said Jerry Golub.

Michael DeMasi The Business Review An aggressive expansion plan by The Golub Corp. will mean more Price Chopper supermarkets, bigger warehouses in Rotterdam and a new corporate headquarters in Schenectady. The chain, which already has 116 stores in six northeastern states, is considering opening 30 more supermarkets over the next three to four years, according to Golub President and CEO Neil Golub. Golub didn't identify the locations during a Nov. 15 press conference, but said the growth would come from new construction or acquisition of other stores within the company's existing territory. Separately, the company will expand its stores in Saratoga Springs and Granville, replace stores in Colonie and Shrewsbury, Mass., and build new stores in four communities: Hamilton and Warwick, N.Y., and Durham and Windsor, Conn. An expansion of the Malta store was recently completed. The growth will boost the size of a chain that is already ranked as the 115th largest private company in the United States, with $3.01 billion in revenue in 2006, according to a list published Nov. 8 by Forbes.com. Golub Corp. ranked 96th the year before, with the same revenue. The company, which is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, employs more than 24,000 people and is the largest private-sector employer in Schenectady County. Golub and his family own 45 percent of the company; the remainder is owned by employees. The company needs more storage space to supply the new stores. As a result, it will spend $19 million to build 524,000 square feet of warehouse space on Duanesburg Road in Rotterdam. To accommodate the additional warehouses, the corporate headquarters will move to a vacant 9.5-acre parcel on Nott Street in Schenectady. Golub announced the news inside the new GE Theatre at Proctors in downtown Schenectady, drawing applause from the 80 or so city and county officials, company executives and others in the auditorium. The new six-story, 240,000-square-foot, energy-efficient headquarters will be built on the site of what was the Big 'N Plaza, a dilapidated shopping center that was demolished two years ago. The site has sat empty since then, awaiting redevelopment in an area dubbed College Park North, across the street from a Union College dormitory (formerly a Ramada Inn). "This is going to be as 'green' a building as we can make it," Golub said of the design. The Galesi Group in Rotterdam, a large commercial real estate developer that now owns the property, will finance construction of the new headquarters and lease the building to the Golub Corp. for 30 years. The land has contaminated soil that will be cleaned up prior to the start of construction, with the help of state and federal brownfields programs (my guess is the casino deal F'D them), said David Buicko, chief operating officer of The Galesi Group. The Schenectady Metroplex Development Authority is not providing any grants or loans, Buicko said. Construction of the $22 million headquarters is expected to start in September 2008 and will be finished by October 2009. About 750 people will work in the building, slightly more than are at the existing headquarters in Rotterdam because of the company's projected growth, said Mona Golub, company spokeswoman. Neil Golub estimated 850 to 1,000 people--including employees, vendors and others--would visit the new headquarters in Schenectady daily, a surge of activity in an area not far from downtown. The size of the new headquarters in Schenectady and the 800-space parking lot will take up all of the available room on the parcel, Neil Golub said. As a result, he said the Capital District YMCA--which previously said it would build a new branch at College Park North--is considering an alternate location one block north, across Peek Street. The fundraising campaign for the new YMCA has taken longer than expected. According to Mayor Brian Stratton, the YMCA has raised half of the $10 million needed to build the new headquarters. The other site in Schenectady is the Nott Street Industrial Park, another remnant of American Locomotive in the city where a private developer has proposed a long-term redevelopment with upscale housing, retail and professional office. Golub said he was intrigued by the location along the Mohawk River but the timeframe for cleaning up that land and moving forward with any construction was too long. Gillen, the Metroplex chairman, was one of the officials who cheered the announcement Price Chopper is moving its headquarters to Nott Street. He said Golub -- one of the founders of Schenectady 2000, an effort begun in the early 1990s to revitalize the city -- was a "pioneer." It was Schenectady 2000 that pushed for the creation of the Metroplex, an economic development agency that uses a portion of county sales tax receipts to spur private investment. Although the Metroplex was involved in the deal for the new Golub headquarters, the agency is not supplying grants or loans to the Galesi Group for the project, Buicko said.

Senator Hugh T. Farley (R-C-I, Schenectady) today assisted with the dedication of the new six-story $30 million Golub Corporation headquarters on Schenectady’s Nott Street.
The project was facilitated by the Schenectady Metroplex. In 1998 Senator Farley developed and sponsored the Schenectady Metroplex law, acclaimed as model legislation offering declining industrial cities new life through a unique mix of public and private cooperation.
“The Golub family and the Price Copper organization have always been community-minded,” said Senator Farley, “whether it is through sponsoring the annual “Melodies of Christmas” benefit at Proctor's, a wonderful facility which I have helped to provide funding to restore and expand, or at my annual “Healthy Heart Day” at the Riverside Center in Amsterdam.
“Now Price Chopper is once again partnering with the community in growing jobs in our region and by constructing this beautiful addition to the Schenectady landscape, anchoring development in the areas between Union College, the Stockade, the Erie Boulevard corridor, and plans for future development of the former Alco site.”
The environmentally state-of-the-art building is located on a 9.5-acre parcel adjacent to Union College . The 240,000-square-foot structure is owned by the Galesi Group and leased for 30 years to the Golub Corporation. The new building houses over 750 employees who formerly were situated in several Golub Corp. administrative centers. There are 890 parking spaces, a cafeteria, and an on-site gym.
The Golub Corp. operates 119 Price Chopper supermarkets in six northeastern states. It annually generates $3 billion in revenue.
Relocation of Golub operations from Rotterdam , New York facilitates expansion of the company’s warehousing operations in that Schenectady County town and is expected to increase employment there by 300 positions.

ROTTERDAM - Golub Corp., the company that owns Price Chopper supermarkets, will announce a multimillion-dollar construction project Monday for its Rotterdam headquarters.
Golub Corp. officials will unveil details of the initiative at a news conference at 1 p.m. at company headquarters on Duanesburg Road, according to a press advisory released Friday. The plan will include new jobs and additional property tax revenue to the surrounding area, said Mona Golub, a company spokeswoman. She declined to release details about the project or the number of jobs that will be created.
Neil Golub, the company's president and chief executive, will make the announcement and will be joined by Rotterdam Supervisor John Paolino, Ray Gillen of the Schenectady Metroplex Development Authority and David Buicko, chief operating officer of Galesi Group. Rotterdam-based Galesi Group is a real estate developer that owns the industrial park where Golub Corp. has its headquarters and warehouse operation.
Golub Corp. operates 107 Price Chopper stores in New York, Connecticut, Vermont, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and New Hampshire.
The grocer employs 24,000 workers and had estimated revenue of $2.5 billion in 2004, according to the business information Web site Hoovers.com. Forbes magazine recently ranked Golub Corp. the 76th largest private company in the United States.
Paolino declined to talk about the project Friday. "We'll wait until the Golub family makes their announcement," he said. "It's great to have the Golubs and Price Chopper in the community."
Gillen would say only that Metroplex, which helps finance economic development projects in the city of Schenectady and Schenectady County, will not contribute any funding to the Golub project. Neil Golub is a member of the Metroplex board of directors. Buicko could not be reached for comment.
Golub Corp. has been purchasing land near its headquarters for the last several years. In 2003, the company assembled several small parcels for a com bined price of $260,000 on Dunnsville Road, near its headquarters and warehouse facilities. At the time, Mona Golub said the land was for "future office expansion" that was several years off.
