SCCC wins START-UP NY approval
Thursday, June 5, 2014
By Haley Viccaro (Contact)
Gazette Reporter

SCHENECTADY — Schenectady County Community College has received approval from the state to lure businesses to campus under Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s business tax incentive program START-UP NY.

SCCC is pitching two sites in downtown Schenectady as tax-free zones for businesses including the college-owned Kindl Building at 201 State St. and the NYBizLab at 251 State St.

The college is looking to attract expanding, out-of-state and start-up companies focused in education technology, logistics, software development and applications, SCCC announced on Thursday.

Those areas align with the college’s programs in nanoscale materials technology, storage battery technology, public safety, supply chain management, computer networking systems and cyber security.

“START-UP NY provides a new opportunity for SCCC to forge partnerships with growing businesses looking to partner with the college’s excellent faculty and leverage the education assets of the college to secure future growth,” said Martha Asselin, acting president of SCCC.

START-UP NY was signed into law by Gov. Andrew Cuomo in an effort to bring more companies to New York and create job opportunities for college graduates. The program allows new, expanding and out-of-state companies to locate on or near college campuses and pay no local or state taxes for 10 years.

The University at Albany and the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering in Albany were also approved under the program in March and April, respectively. No companies have announced their move to the campuses since their plans were approved by the state.

On Wednesday Cuomo announced the first 12 companies partnering with Cornell University, Rochester Institute of Technology, University at Buffalo and SUNY Downstate Medical Center as part of START-UP NY. The businesses are expected to create nearly 400 jobs and invest $50 million in those areas.

DV, there have been 10 years of this alleged, so called "economic development."   What is it giving to the taxpayers, the homeowners and their neighborhoods?

10 year of this, as you call it, "economic development."   Tell us, 10 years of it under the dems, tell us DV, what has been improved in the city.   The tax base?   The property values?   The home sales?  The home sale prices?  Essential city services?   Tax bills?   Blight?   Housing stock?

You won't address those things.   Why not?

By the way, DV, you need to correct your "signature" to Cuomo for Governor"

Cuomo and McC are EXACTLY THE SAME -- hand out property tax exemptions and make the homeowner pay the tax bill of the business properties.   And of course your beloved gov cheers for government health care, and you cheer for the local government health care, i.e., the  nursing hone which will bankrupt the taxpayers (but of course you are NOT a taxpayer so you don't suffer the financial burdens).

Get ready for more zombie houses, more house up for sale with the owners fled, more abandoned houses, more boarded up homes.

But of course DV, you won't address the FACTS

Arizona CEO touts New York business climate in new ads

Mike Sunnucks
Senior Reporter- Phoenix Business Journal
Email  |  Twitter  |  Facebook
States such as Arizona usually boast of grabbing companies and jobs from the likes of California, New York and Illinois. But one Phoenix CEO is turning that dynamic on its head.

Greg Heiland, CEO of Phoenix-based clean room apparel supplier Valutek, is featured in New York State economic development ads promoting the business climate in Albany. Heiland says in the ad Valutek is relocating manufacturing to New York.

“I tell people it's for the climate,” Heiland says in the ad touting tax-free zones set up throughout the Empire State.

He also is featured in another Empire State Development Corp. add saying Arizona-based Valutek is relocating jobs to New York.

That’s not sitting well back home.

Gubernatorial candidate Fred DuVal says Arizona needs a tourism and economic development rebranding campaign to tout the state’s economy and innovation and to get away from more negative political images of the state. DuVal also wants to extend and expand existing state research and development tax credits to help Arizona startups get more investment dollars.

Somehow, it doesn't surprise me that the nayboobs would laugh at something that will create jobs and promote economic development.

Somehow, it doesn't surprise me that a non-taxpayer 50 year old man who has not yet left the nest, who is not self sufficient, who does not live like a normal adult man and independent of his two nanny mommies, would cheer for wild uncontrolled spending on assorted things that have proven to cause a massive reduction in the tax base, cause home values, prices, and sales to fall, cause the elimination of essential services to the residents in their neighborhoods while increasing taxes on homeowners.

Somehow, it doesn't surprise me that a man who calls himself Catholic, but was a failure in a Catholic college, a failure in the seminary, to turn his back on teachings of Christ and instead to unconditionally support and cheer for his fellow democrat party people and their quest take more money from financially struggling homeowners in order to give the money to their millionaire political cronies--even though these practices result in homeowners losing their homes to tax foreclosure.

Somehow, it doesn't surprise me that a town planning committee person would fall for fairy tales about jobs when the jobs are poverty wage jobs that require all kinds of public assistance, get all their withheld income tax refunded and then some via EITC.

Somehow, if doesn't surprise me that DV sees the city and county only through rose colored glasses, but when one is not a self sufficient independent adult, and must rely on not one, but two mommies to support him, I guess that falling for taxpayer funded propaganda from Andrew Cuomo would be DV's speed.

Arizona CEO touts New York business climate in new ads

Greg Heiland, CEO of Phoenix-based clean room apparel supplier Valutek, is featured in New York State economic development ads promoting the business climate in Albany. Heiland says in the ad Valutek is relocating manufacturing to New York

Interesting you bring him up, since the move of Valutek was independent of the Start-up program, and is falsely being
touted in those commercials. Good example of taking credit for something that is not true!
Good job Mr. Political stooge. you should be careful what you tout as success.

Quoted Text

There is nothing wrong with initiatives started by governors or any elected leaders. It would just be nice if they were telling the whole truth. Though, there have been a few ads since Start-Up NY’s induction, the most recent ad is the one under scrutiny. The advertisement speaks of a company called Valutek. Its CEO Greg Heiland is touting and endorsing Start-Up NY as a major business success. He goes on to explain how his company moved to Albany, NY because of the 10-year tax-free zones created under the governor’s program. The program itself seems to be nothing more than a gimmick to boost New York’s economy in light of tax increases and gun control legislation; two gun manufacturers stated they were leaving because of the latter. Now, if this success of drawing in Valutek to New York were true, than it would be an accomplishment. However, are those the facts of the matter or is this ad a tad misleading?

It seems to be the case that Mr. Heiland does endorse the governor’s program. Obviously — unless he’s a manufactured hologram — it’s true. The reason behind his company’s move is a little bit murkier. Valutek is a company that manufactures clean room products i.e. gloves, sticky mats, and cleaning products. The company was listed to house it’s operation in Phoenix, AZ up until 2011. It was then that they made a move to Albany, NY. The Albany Business Review reported in November 25th, 2011:

“EO Greg Heiland said Valutek will create 25 new jobs in New York through a partnership with the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering in Albany and the State University of New York Institute of Technology in Utica.”

Well, wait a minute, He stated in governor Cuomo’s advertisement that it was due to Start-Up NY — the same program announced in October, 2013. It would appear that the company moved two years prior to the claim in the ad. In fact, they moved because of a business partnership and not as a direct result of the so-called 10-year tax-free zones created by Start-Up NY. So, why would be one question. That is uncertain and speculation is inappropriate. However, one thing is for certain: Fool me once, shame on the governor and Mr. Heiland. One must be careful though because any further fooling will be all on you.

Tax money that belongs to the hardworking NY taxpayers is stolen from them to WASTEFULLLY spend their money on ads all over the country and put taxpaying New Yorker's in deeper financially troubles.

No wonder the taxpayers are fleeing NY almost as much city of Schenectady taxpayers.

First of all, this item is NOT "good" news because no taxes paid, the revenue still needs to be collected, it falls on all the financially struggling people to make up the difference,

Secondly, for every little story  of good news, there's two piece of bad news that occurs in the city.

By the way, how's the tax base doing?

The Democrat party continues the renaissance.

[quote]SCCC wins START-UP NY approval
...

.....under Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s business tax incentive program START-UP NY.

START-UP NY was signed into law by Gov. Andrew Cuomo in an effort reduce the tax base in New York and increase taxes on homeowners in the cities.  The program allows  companies to locate near college campuses and pay no local or state taxes for 10 years but rather the existing homeowners will make up the difference for the lots tax revenue.

It is a program modeled after the downtown renovation project in the City of Schenectady in which residents fund the renovation of downtown through higher sales taxes followed by homeowners paying higher taxes to cover the cost of the property and school taxes of these downtown properties.  The properties and businesses, largely owned by multimillionaires, have created many jobs in the low wage income bracket.
