SCHENECTADY — For close to 200 residents of the Schenectady County nursing home, move in day to a new, cozier $45 million facility will be Monday morning.

Raina Danish and her boyfriend Mike Faiola of Colonie were among those who were impressed with the three-story residence on Hecheltown Road that has roughly 20-by-20 foot rooms with spacious showers and an open feel.

Faiola's mother, who is 80 and suffers from dementia, has been at Glendale for about four months.

"This is like a home," proclaimed Danish after the guided tour. "When you think of somebody living out the rest of their lives you want it to be like a neighborhood."

That's the reaction county leaders and nursing home officials were hoping for during the site's opening ceremony and ribbon cutting Wednesday.

"The design of the building itself is beautiful, but it's a beautiful tool that allows us to give control of their life back to residents at the highest level," said Glendale Administrator Ed Marchi. "I think this is going to be beyond anything that anybody ever imagined."

County legislators Tony Jasenski and Gary Hughes talked about the decade-long journey to get the nursing home for $5 million under budget.

Eight-five percent of construction costs will be paid for through a Medicaid capital reimbursement program, and 15 percent will come from a 30-year bond, county officials have said.

The old Glendale nursing home, located behind the new one, will be demolished in July. The site will be turned into a parking area and green space.

Uh, if you had reading ability you'd see that there was already a thread started on this issue.

DV calls the FACT that our county taxes are going to go up substantially, he calls that a tremendous success.   Still waiting for you to provide proof of your statement that the county taxes are the lowest in 50 years.   Why don't you provide proof?   Huh?

http://www.rotterdamny.info/m-1401377690/

And success cannot be measured at this early stage.   I trust you know for a FACT that this is going to DRASTICALLY increase our taxes!   Overpaid salaries, lavish employee benefits, bloated pensions padded with overtime, and the cost of the huge showers--bigger than the showers at the Pocono honeymoon resorts--we taxpayers will be paying for seniors with dementia to be having orgies in the showers.

Oh, but that's right, you are not a taxpayer, you won't be affected.

Have you seen the thread with all the nice houses in the city that are for sale, but the owners fled the city before even listing the houses in many cases?   Have you seen the tread providing the evidence showing the ghost town the city is becoming under the dem leadership?   Why did you avoid addressing the empty homes and the ghost town homes?   Too embarrassed to admit the how the city dems are ruining the city and causing a ghost town? That will expand through the whole county with the taxes we will pay for a nursing home.

All other municipalities are looking to privatize their county nursing homes because having a county nursing home is a crushing financial burden on the taxpayers, but leave it to DV to cheer for the dem government to spend the taxpayers money wildly and uncontrollably.   But then, he doesn't pay taxes.

I'd say, whatever Medicaid pays them.  Medicare does not pay for nursing home if I remember, or if it does it might be a PARTIAL allowance at most for a couple months.  Well that's under "traditional" medicare, again, IF it covers anything, I'd have to check.   Then there are Medicare Advantage plans and I'll bet they do not cover nursing home at all.

Oh, and beyond the cost that Medicaid pays, we who own our homes and thus have our names on the tax rolls are the ones who are responsible for paying the bill for it!

And so funny, DV says it's a "tremendous success."   ROFL   Something that just opened cannot be deemed a success.   That will be the description after years of glowing reports by the state.  Glendale gets cited for so many bad things

Hey DV, what's the bold print for on the how the cost will be paid?   Are you trying to insinuate that none of it is being paid for by us taxpayers?

The 30 year bond comes from the county property taxes -- something YOU do NOT pay!

And the Medicaid capital reimbursement, well that's taxpayers' money as well, but not the property taxes.

Yeah, well look at the lavish overpriced shower.   You can easily see it has probably 8' x 8' roughly, assuming the bed is 7'.  And why does it have very very expensive wall tile?   Acrylic would have been sufficient!

And why on God's earth is the shower so huge?   I completely understand grab bars, but 3' x 3' is big enough.  I guess there is the thought that people will access the shower in their wheelchair assuming it's waterproof, but even then about 4' x 4' is plenty big enough.

I guess they need showers that big so they can have some 10 patient sex orgies in them?

My next door neighbor had to put his wife in Glendale and before Medicaid starts to pay you must first spend all the money that belongs to her or at least half of all their money. The bill for his wife was $9000 per month for at least 4 years before he refused to pay any more.

everyone is at first responsible to pay their way...forget about passing on $$ to family, you worked for it for yourself. If you
want family to have it, give it to them throughout your active years so you can watch them enjoy it. Forget about saying
"when I get old and die this will all be yours"...that's a crock of sh!t....

it's about $100,000/year for elder care in an institution.....that's not including fluff and buff....and the government system
doesn't EVEN COME CLOSE to being able to afford the workers a decent salary, never mind the fluff and buff.....

say what you will, a county nursing home is set up as a 'standard' so that if you do choose to stay home the government will
always have access to you to tell you that you aren't living right or that your family isn't doing a good job or the 'right' job and
the nursing home is waiting for you.....

A nursing home is like the VA.....especially if a government run one...sure there are inspections and fines, but really, if they closed
all the homes in 'jeopardy' where would everyone go?????

it's a catch 22...I can't afford you and you can't afford me.

stay home, lock your doors and don't let anyone in...the only reason why they want in is to control the end of YOUR life in a
manner they deem proper in their own minds.

A wheel chair, or shower chair and then 1 to 2 staff members to assist. This shower represents what is needed to safely take care of geriatric patients. It may be more than some need, but it is not unreasonable. Small spaces are very difficult to safely maneuver in. Some patients also require additional equipment that, in this shower, can be accommodated without being directly in the water.   There is likely a sink in toilet in the room that is not visible from the angle of the photo...you know, like a regular bathroom. 😊

Surely the cheerleader for the city and county dems and their wild spending on this palace will be looking to have us taxpayer pay for his nannies if they need it.  And with the one's bloated pension, they better be saving their money and not looking to us, taxpayers are broke
