Yesterday was the 81st Birthday of the living music legend and a truly American Treasure - Willy Nelson. His musical talents, accomplishments and contributions cross over so many genres and decades. For me - he will always be one of The Highwaymen with Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson and Waylon Jennings. I hope that he is "On the Road, Again" and enjoying nothing but "Blue Skies" for many, many years ahead.

One of my absolute favorite songs, City of New Orleans, written by one of my favorite songwriters, Steve Goodman, was covered by Willy Nelson. It is without a doubt the best cover of the song -- Goodman's original version, of course, is the only one better. Goodman died way too young and we've lost so many of the truly talented singer/songwriters over the years. Sadly, the great age of music in America (country and the other forms worth listening to) is nearly dead or dead.

This 1966 hit reminds us that Willy Nelson began his musical career performing in a Polka Band in Texas -- that great state where many of the earliest non-Hispanic European settlers were from Central Europe -- Germans and Poles. They influenced Texas music and, of course, that great American tradition - Texas Barbecue. Texas Barbecue - the barbecue worth eating - was created by German and Polish settlers bringing together brisket and kielbasa. (needless to say the BEST cuisines of Europe married to form the BEST cuisine in America.) The rest is history.

everyone has made donations to charities or just their neighbors, they just aren't in the lime light....
They haven't raised $29 million, which is the total Willie Nelson raised for just Farm Aid one of many charities he backs, in 20 years.
