MURRYSVILLE, Pa. -- Police officials said a 16-year-old boy "was flashing two knives around" when he injured 19 students and a school security officer during a stabbing incident at a Westmoreland County high school Wednesday morning.

Murrysville Police Chief Thomas Seefeld said the unnamed 16-year-old sophomore walked through Franklin Regional High School in Murrysville, stabbing and cutting people at about 7:15 a.m. before classes began.

Police said 19 students were injured, with injuries stemming from critical to minor. One adult, the school security officer, was injured and was able to subdue the 16-year-old boy with the help of an assistant principal.

Not all of the injured suffered stab wounds, some suffered cuts and scrapes while the situation developed and students tried to evacuate the building, police said.

Of the 19 students who were injured, seven were transported to nearby Forbes Regional Hospital. The other 12 students were taken to UPMC hospital facilities.

Dr. Chris Kaufman, of Forbes Regional, said some of the victims suffered life-threatening injuries, but expected all victims at his hospital to survive. He said four of the victims sent to Forbes Regional were the most seriously injured.

UPMC officials released patient updates on Twitter. Of the 12 victims sent to their facilities, five were treated and released.

UPMC officials said a 17-year-old girl was being treated for facial injuries at UPMC East in Monroeville and was in fair condition.

Five victims, a 14-year-old boy in critical condition, a 17-year-old boy in serious condition, a 16-year-old boy in serious condition, a 17-year-old boy in fair condition and a 17-year-old female in fair condition were being treated at UPMC Children's Hospital, officials said.

UPMC officials said a 17-year-old boy was being treated for chest and abdominal injuries at UPMC Presbyterian and was in critical condition.

Seefeld said the bloody crime scene was "vast" and may take a couple of days to process. Investigators haven't determined a motive but said they're looking into reports of a threatening phone call between the suspect and another student the night before.

Franklin Regional Superintendent Gennaro Piraino said the school building was expected to be closed for the next several days.

Gov. Tom Corbett issued a statement following the morning's incident. He pledged state police assistance to local law enforcement in investigating the incident.

"I was shocked and saddened upon learning of the events that occurred this morning as students arrived at Franklin Regional High School," Corbett said. "As a parent and grandparent, I can think of nothing more distressing than senseless violence against children. My heart and prayers go out to all the victims and their families."

Murrysville is about 15 miles east of Pittsburgh, or 45 miles west of Johnstown.

Make sure we get maximum political value out of all crisis and tragedy- it is the demoCRAP way!

"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."

An assistant principal and several students were hailed as heroes today for their quick thinking after a student allegedly went on a stabbing spree inside a Murrysville, Pa., high school.

Thomas Seefeld, the Murrysville police chief, said at a news conference that an assistant principal at Franklin Regional High School tackled the 16-year-old suspect, who is now in police custody.

You don't care about possible life altering injuries Box? Or is gun policy all that matters to you here?

Take a guess, box was hoping it was another shooting spree so it would further his agenda. Since it was a knifing spree it kinda blows his arguments out of the water that violence would end without guns. Where is his calls blaming the students mother for not locking up the kitchen knives. Maybe box would entertain us and give us some "common sense" knife laws that should be put into place

Just the opposite Henry.  20 kids died in Sandy Hook, many of them shot multiple times.
So far of the 20 stabbed zero kids died in this attack.  If Adam Lanza's mom had secured
her guns (as the NY SAFE ACT requires) those kids would likely be alive today.

Or Lanza would have went on a stabbing spree like this idiot and caused the same amount of casualties. So should we have to lock up knives if there is a mentally ill person in the house, come on box lets hear some common sense knife laws.

If Lanza had only a knife, possibly those kids would have survived as with the PA stabbings.  The difference
was an assault weapon.  Some of those kids were shot 11 times, and all were shot multiple times.

Henry, you and I could overcome a stabber with two knives... Not so with an assault weapons and
30 round magazines.

So you think you can, I can see you trying to bear hug him while he's squirming around stabbing you in the leg, then when you grab his arm to stop that knife the other arm comes up and sticks you with a foot long blade right in the neck. I love the wannabe heroes you meet on these forums and how they would deal with these situations.

LMAO!  Henry gets it wrong again.  I SAID YOU AND I!
You know... YOU AND I TOGETHER... Of course I'd probably do most of the heavy lifting, since you
only feel safe enough to act if you have several guns nearby!

Heavy lifting? I only need to pull a 4-5 pound trigger so go for it, I leave the heavy lifting to you
