It doesn't really break down that way, Moonglow. The biggest portion of lottery revenues goes to payouts to winners, then a smaller amount but still in the billions goes to schools, then the rest operating expenses etc.. The part that goes to schools gets divided amongst all the schools. Most of the schools' money comes from local property taxes, and the amount they get in state aid can vary. The schools make up their own budgets, and it depends on how much they take in, what percentage goes for teachers' expenses.
Sometimes the State is late in telling the districts what their aid is going to be, and the districts have to borrow money, and one time, in Schenectady, the city stiffed the school district on money it owed, so that would be more expenses for the homeowners to pay as well.
I think our city district puts the budget online.

Thanks.  Was really trying to determine via a breakdown of figures, how much of the Lottery $ supplements the pay/pensions.   In other words where would the pay/pension $ come from w/o the lottery.   We never had a lottery prior to 1967 and the wages were paid.   So does the lottery $ income free up orig. earmarked $ for the pay to be shifted elsewhere, like to a Gen. Fund?

All good questions, but not sure it can be defined that way.  I think it just goes into the general budget for the district.
As for prior to the lottery, can only assume that the increased costs would have been pass on to taxpayers, and school
taxes today would be much higher.  On the other hand, I think school administrators are ill equipped at controlling costs,
so little effort is done to contain increases because (a) there is lottery money and (b) they just continue to raise taxes.
I think the saddest part of it all is that the funds were to be spent to improve education, but I don't believe they ever found their
way into that specific category......it became ready cash for the school districts to spend as they wanted.

I'm not even sure it could qualify as extra money, it's just money from the state from a different source. Schools received state aid before Lotto, the "give a dollar to education" slogan was just a way to get voters to approve gambling.
According to the schools, the state mandates programs all the time without money to pay for them.
You know, Moon, if you are interested enough you can give Larry Spring a call and ask him some questions directly. He's made a point of trying to be 'transparent' with things like the budget. Or perhaps the assistant super could help you. It's okay to phone these people, I used to do it myself. Superintendents are in various meetings a lot though.

making 'gambling' a foundation block just hides the 'can't budget' issues.....it's a shame we don't take things VERY seriously

how about letting inmates participate in their own 'lotto for education'? or how about educating folks BEFORE they turn into
criminals....

educating them on the good things in life...not the 'if you don't do this you will have nothing.' 'if you don't do it this way and
be a cog, you will be nothing.'........

we have it all backwards...we're a land of laws but NOT a land of the free anymore.....dirty dirty dirty shame

The idea of the proper-name effect highlights the reinscription of empirical literalism.
Meditation on the relationship between the idea of the proper-name effect and the
reinscription of empirical literalism might be profoundly irritating in the hands of a less
skilled writer.

The modern conservative is engaged in one of man's oldest exercises in moral
philosophy; that is, the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness.

you two OBVIOUSLY have a very difficult time thinking about the big picture and anything out of your party allegiance. glad your
hand is on the outgoing door...what you left behind is pigeon droppings. I'm sure I won't leave much more, but talking about
others being negative, your banter about others thinking outside the box makes folks think "there are only sticks in the mud, and
that's all there will ever be." thanks for making that clearer than I already guessed.

hope your retirement funds carry you through your heart bypasses and broken hips and the lifestyle you THINK you
will have.

According to the NYS Lottery website, lottery funds which go to public schools account for 15% of the state aid to local schools.  Since those funds go into the school districts general fund accounts, there is no way to specifically track how those lottery monies are spent.
However, one could extrapolate that whatever the percentage of the school district's budget is spent on teachers and administrators pay and pensions -- that about half that comes from state aid -- then of that portion which comes from state aid 15% would come from the State Lottery.

Well Mr know-it-all, the budget is online, why don't you do the research and provide the answer.  Oh yeah, you don't know how.

That's right, the word "budget," is not something you need to worry about since you are not self sufficient, not affected by budgets and taxes.
