Box, a freelance writer by the name of Ewan Watt is the 'source' of the article. Tucker Carlson did not write it. I did not expect you to read it, only some of the other posters, who I thought might be interested in the man's take on the topic. You are the only one who thinks this decision has anything to do with health.
Health??? CVS made this decision for PROFIT. They see this choice as one that will in the long run, increase their bottom line. Which has been my position all along. |

One third of cancers in the US are smoking related... and much of the cost of that choice is paid for by the taxpayers. CVS stopped selling cigarettes but is also promoting 'stop smoking' clinics and discounts to help Americans quit smoking. ~Annual health care expenditures caused by tobacco, New York 2006 - $8.17 billion ~ Annual Medicaid expenditures caused by tobacco, New York 2006 - $5.4 billion The cost of a pack of cigarettes to NY Taxpayers? ~ Smoking-caused health costs and productivity losses per pack sold in New York: $21.91 |

One third of cancers in the USA are smoking related. Everything else that is being discussed in this thread, if used properly is not a health problem. There is no safe level of smoking for the smoker or for those around them.
CVS is promoting health and is now in the business of "minute clinics", flu shots, etc. They soon will announce a discounted 'quit smoking promotion with special prices to help make it easier to quit smoking.
There is no ObamaCare payoff... dumping cigs is a business decision to build it's 'image'.
I agree Madam. |

Restaurants don't sell cosmetics, so they are limiting your personal choices. Gas Stations don't sell designer clothes so they are limiting your personal choices. Drugstores don't sell Surf and Turf sit down dinners, so they are limiting your personal choices. Movie theaters don't sell cigarettes so they are limiting your personal choices. They all know how you and every American should live your life. GET REAL !!!!!!!!

you still think that the 1%ers will be abiding by the same cattle rules....you've got to be kidding...you're OK with the system telling the 99% how to live their lives based on their income? really? so you agree to medicaid/food stamp drug testing and limiting their choice of where to spend the $$ they get from the cast system? you're not liberal you're a control freak..... national health insurance just slammed the door of choice on your poor poor 99%ers and kept the control in the hands of the 1%ers.... I'm not promoting smoking, I really don't care if you miss work and cause America loss of productivity as prescribed by your evil corporations and the 1%ers in charge of it all.... the union/military teach this..... |

Box said he worked for a gun manufacturing company...He's concerned the workers might get sick and miss work caused by smoking, when they should be at their work stations assembling guns. Ohhhh...the irony. I love watching the anti corporation crowd defend the biggest corporate pharmacy in the country. |

HUH! I didn't defend CVS... There is nothing to defend. They made a corporate decision concerning their image... that's all. I happen to agree with the decision, not because I care about CVS, but because I hope that this one small step will lead to further restrictions on one of the most addictive substances openly available in America. Along with President Obama and most of America, the American Cancer Society applauds CVS's plan to not sell cigarettes.

Lung Association urge others to follow CVS's lead on tobacco
Quoted Text
The American Lung Association of the Northeast each issued statements Wednesday applauding CVS Caremark's decision to stop selling tobacco and tobacco-related products.
"The American Lung Association of the Northeast applauds today's announcement by CVS Caremark to discontinue the sale of tobacco products at all CVS / Pharmacy locations beginning October 1, 2014," chief executive Jeff Seyler said. "We strongly agree that stopping the sale of tobacco products at a business that is meant to promote wellness is in keeping with their central mission and the right move for healthier lungs and healthier families across our country.

Yup, you support corporate decisions that restrict the distribution of a product that YOU BELIEVE should not be consumed by Americans. Your corporatist support kinda runs contradictory to your "pro choice" to do what you want with your body. Corporations aren't people, except when they decide to promote an anti-smoking campaign that you agree with. You may not support CVS specifically, but you support corporate conglomerates controlling accessibility to a product YOU BELIEVE should be prevented from being made available to the public. You authoritarian extremists are very dangerous. You will push your personal agenda onto everybody, whether it is using the power of government to directly prohibit those things you believe should be prohibited, or indirectly, using corporations to "voluntarily" prohibit these things you believe individuals should not have access to. The means of how you reach your authoritarian goals make no difference. It doesn't matter, this attempt at quasi prohibition of tobacco will backfire anyways. You authoritarians that openly admit you want to RESTRICT personal behavior is going to fade away over the next decade as the boomers start getting warehoused in the nursing homes. The authoritarian generation will start losing their influence and the desires to control everybody's life will begin to diminish. |

Yes, check out box's authoritarian tendencies. Look at what box HOPES for in his own words. He wants to restrict what he believes YOU should put in your body. He doesn't care how it happens, whether it's outlawed or corporations restrict it. All we need to know about box is his desires to FURTHER RESTRICT SUBSTANCES OPENLY AVAILABLE TO AMERICANS. Because apparently that is the freedom box fought for.

What I would like to see for cigarette manufacturers is to complete an FDA review as if their product were a new product being introduced to the American people for the first time. If their product passes the FDA review, then they should not be restricted. But if their product is dangerous to the American public... like asbestos, or DDT or TCE then it should be restricted and treated as you'd treat any other toxic chemical.
