ALBANY, N.Y. — Gov. Andrew Cuomo will propose measures this week to benefit some of New York's more than 900,000 military veterans, targeting businesses owned by disabled vets for some state contracts, according to administration officials familiar with the plan.
Cuomo is set to outline his agenda for 2014 in the state-of-the-state address Wednesday. He also plans to hold a summit this spring on the needs of veterans and services for them and their families. Wall Street Journal

In the Soviet Union the government and the military got more than equal treatment under the law as well.
Women owned business get breaks/preferred treatment Minority owned business get breaks/preferred treatment Small Business get breaks/preferred treatment Hiring Union Labor gets breaks/preferred treatment HUD zone businesses get breaks/preferred treatment Corporations using any of the above get tax breaks (State and Federal) Colleges award scholarships based on many of the same criteria as well as others Colleges get tax breaks (State and Federal) for enrolling the above "Sports" talented individuals get preferred educational treatment, even though they may not come close to qualifying educationally ALL businesses practice nepotism over qualification Proposal is for giving preferred status to businesses owned by Disabled Veterans.... HOW TERRIBLE THAT THE GOVERNOR WOULD EVEN ENTERTAIN SUCH A SHAMEFUL THING!!!!
How terrible that the government is allowed to favor anyone.
We have devolved into a caste system whereby favored groups are more equal than others.
Businesses can practice nepotism.
The government should not.
I guess the equal rights thing was just a passing fad.
So for that contracts should be given to them rather then a company who can provide a better service or product and maybe at a cheaper price. Its funny how you mock some but defend your category when given the same special treatment.
So talented sports student with 2.3 grade average should get scholarship and preference over 3.8 student with no sports talent So minority owned business should get contracts over others that may be less cost and more qualified So a company located in a HUD zone should get preference...... So a woman owned business should get preference......

Competing and being the best is what should count and be the motivation to push further, what motivation is there to those not on the "special" list now, even if the best they will be pushed off to the side because they're not a minority or didn't serve. None of them should get preference...I think that's the point. And if the governor wants to award contracts to veteran businesses, DONT SEND OUT A PRESS RELEASE...JUST AWARD THE CONTRACT. Announcing your intentions demeans the vet businesses legitimate ability to compete, and is nothing more than POLITICAL PANDERING.
If you favor pandering through government contracts, then Halliburton and pandering to the military industrial complex should be your favorite company. To say pandering is a fact of politics in fascist America doesn't make it right.

By putting them ahead of others who might of worked more hard to succeed, yeah of course you are for it.

I don't particularly agree with these policies, because much has changed over the years....however, just like everything else, if people don't do what is right someone always has to step in to push them to do the right thing....

I personally was a victim of these policies twice, but I'm not sitting here whining about it... because I understand what caused them to be enacted.
I also know 1st hand about this, another contractor got a job because he got brownie points for being a minority. In the end the brownie points weren't enough and the better contractors (me) had to be hired back because 2nd place wasn't good enough for them. If they were better then they would have deserved the job but they weren't, I don't feel sorry for them, I hope they try harder and succeed but it shows how flawed a system "special treatment" is.
