The Dems aren't "joining forces" with the Reps, they are just taking advantage of the civil war inside the GOP. If the GOP sides with the TeaBaggers, they lose elections... If the GOP dumps the TeaBaggers, they lose elections.
The Dems will reap the benefit from the GOP disfunction. As far as a 3rd party... there are none except fringe groups with little support.

The GOP was once a proud party that stood for something. Today it's run by fringe candidates who espouse anti science, anti women, anti choice, anti immigrant, anti birth control, anti everything.
The pendulum swings too far to the EXTREME RIGHT, and then corrects back to it's center where America lives.
