Pope: Creation vs Evolution, an ‘Absurdity’
7/25/2007
Pope Benedict XVI said the debate raging in some countries — particularly the
United States and his native Germany — between creationism and evolution
was an “absurdity,” saying that evolution can coexist with faith.

The pontiff said there is much scientific proof to support evolution,
the theory could not exclude a role by God.
“They are presented as alternatives that exclude each other,” the pope said.
“This clash is an absurdity because on one hand there is much scientific proof
in favor of evolution, which appears as a reality that we must see and which
enriches our understanding of life and being as such.”

The modern conservative is engaged in one of man's oldest exercises in moral
philosophy; that is, the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness.

Galileo Was Right
November 01, 1992

No Catholic Pope ever declared that the earth-centric view was infallible.  In fact, No pope has ever or will ever declare a matter of science to be infallible --- why?  Because, Papal Infallibility only can be declared on matters of faith and morals.  Furthermore, the concept of Papal Infallibility did NOT even exist in Galileo's time because the doctrine of papal infallibility wasn't adopted until the 1st Vatican Council in 1870.

So once again, the anti-Catholic bigot and left wing nut, BoxofCrap, has been caught showing his/her general ignorance.

(I wonder if DVOR went to a Catholic school.  He/She seems so touchy about any mention of the word
"Catholic"?  He/She should have paid attention in Religion class.  It would have saved embarrassment
about recent posts.
)

Quoted Text
Papal infallibility is a dogma of the Catholic Church which states that, in
virtue of the promise of Jesus to Peter, the Pope is preserved from the possibility
of error "when, in the exercise of his office as shepherd and teacher of all Christians,
in virtue of his supreme apostolic authority, he defines a doctrine concerning faith
or morals to be held by the whole Church".  (Condemning Galileo to death for blasphemy
would come under that definition)

This doctrine was defined dogmatically in the First Vatican Council of 1869–1870,
but had been defended before that, appearing already in medieval tradition
and becoming the majority opinion at the time of the Counter-Reformation

The FACT is that Papal Infallibility ONLY can be applied to statements on faith and morals.

The FACT is that a Pope must explicitly state that he is proclaiming something infallibly, and that NOT every comment or writing of a Pope is considered fallible.  (note - there are other conditions that apply .. ex. pope must be speaking or writing Ex Cathedra.

The FACT is that only two matters of faith were explicitly issued applying Papal Infallibility -- one was the Dogma of the Assumption and the other the Dogma of the Immaculate Conception.  In the past century, some theological scholars have attempted to look back - pre-1870 - to see what other Papal statements of faith or morals may have been infallible but there is no general agreement nor is there any official statement from the Holy See in regards to that.  Thus, while some unknowning person with an ax to grind against the Church can read Wikipedia and thing he/she knows everything ----- the FACT remains that it (the doctrine of papal infallibility) has only been officially, and universally (Church wise) declared or used TWICE in Church History.

The FACT remains that NO Catholic Pope has ever declared a statement on science - as one anti-Catholic bigot and left wing nut has suggested in regard to the geocentric theory.

The FACT also remains that quite a number of Catholics challenged the Geocentric theory, and believed in other theories including the Heliocentric theory, prior to Galileo -- most notably Father Nicholas Copernicus.  Galileo was one of the first to be able to use telescopes (early versions of) and other techniques in his attempt to PROVE the THEORY of Heliocentrism.   Again, one has to comprehend and be willing to accept that REAL science involves making theories and then proving theories through the scientific method --- and NOT just having someone take a public opinion poll like the left wing nut insists and persists in believing.

It was a statement of SCIENCE that condemned Galileo.  Was execution a "statement of
faith or morals?"

Well the Pope finally made it right... 350 years after making a Statement on Science that was
in error!

Again, No Catholic Pope has ever made an infallible statement on a scientific matter.  You don't seem to comprehend that NOT every word written or spoken by a pope is considered infallible.  Popes for over 2,000 years have made a lot of statements and written a lot of material -- but NEVER have they asserted as infallible DOGMA that the earth was the center of the universe.  A lot of Popes may have personally believed it -- and yes, Galileo was tried by a Church court -- but NEVER did a pope or the Church make belief in the geocentric theory an Infallible dogma of the Church.

The Pope could say that the Yankees are going to win the World Series in 2013 -- but that would not be an infallible statement on faith or morals.

Only two Papal statements have ever been made invoking the doctrine of Papal Infallibility -- and those had to do with matters of faith and NOT science -- that is a FACT.

In his time, Galileo's  statement that the Sun was the center of our solar system was a RELIGIOUS
ISSUE, not a SCIENTIFIC one.

Galileo was tried by the Inquisition, found "vehemently suspect of heresy", forced to recant,
and spent the rest of his life under house arrest.

Apparently, you have a particularly difficult time absorbing the truth especially when it differs from your distorted view of reality.

It remains a FACT ... that no Catholic Pope has ever declared the Theory of Geocentrism to be an infallible Church dogma -- which is exactly what YOU, BoxofCrap stated -- I called you out on your error.   I never disputed that Galileo was tried by the Church and punished for teaching the Theory of Heliocentrism.  I merely stated that Geocentrism was NEVER an declared by a Catholic Pope as an infallible teaching of the Church -- you remain a hell bent on besmirching the Catholic Church and I will continue to call you out on it every time.

Oh and you are even more of a fool that I first thought if you actually believe it (the geocentric vs. heliocentric controversy) was NOT also a scientific issue.
There is nothing else to be said -- those are the FACTS -- you were wrong  -- and your feeble attempt to attack the Catholic Church has failed.

I see no need to 'besmirch' the Catholic Church... The Catholic Church is doing a pretty good job of
besmirching itself!

Yes I agree.  It's a start and he should be commended for his efforts.
The Church needs to address the ongoing problem of sexual abuse by priests and the coverup
of that abuse by those in higher office in the Church.  The wheels of justice often turn slowly
and in the Catholic Church, it sometimes takes years... hundreds of them.
