A December surge propelled health care sign-ups through the government's
rehabilitated website past the 1 million mark, the Obama administration said Sunday,
reflecting new signs of life for the problem-plagued federal insurance exchange.

Of the more than 1.1 million people now enrolled, nearly 1 million signed up in December,
with the majority coming in the week before a pre-Christmas deadline for coverage to
start in January.

The biggest winner is Brandon Chisholm, a detailer with two daughters, who will get health insurance for the first time, and will have to pay virtually nothing for it because he qualifies for a big government subsidy. That means he can bank the $200 a month the company is giving workers to replace the health insurance it previously provided.

Asked if he was excited at the prospect of getting nearly free coverage on top of the cash stipend, he replied, “Oh yeah! Anything that can help me and my family out, that’s what I’m going to do.”

Twenty-six of the dealership's workers had been covered this year under the old company plan. Twenty-one have now decided to go with the new group plan recommended by the company for next year, though they realize that they face sharply higher out-of-pocket costs next year.

About 5 million people will be without health care next year that they would have
gotten simply if they lived somewhere else in America,” the AP reports.

“They make up a coverage gap in President  Obama’s signature health care law created
by the domino effects of last year’s Supreme Court ruling and states’ subsequent policy
decisions. The court effectively left it up to states to decide whether to open Medicaid,
the federal-state program for the poor and disabled, to more people, primarily poor working
adults without children.”

“Twenty-five states declined. That leaves 4.8 million people in those states without the
health care coverage that their peers elsewhere are getting through the expansion of
Medicaid.”

“Politics is apparent in states’ expansion decisions. Of those that joined it, all but five
supported Obama in last year’s election. Of those that declined, most are more conservative
states in the South, Midwest and northern Rocky Mountains that voted against Obama.”

Florida, California

Florida’s Blue Cross and Blue Shield, for instance, said about 300,000 members are affected while California’s Blue Shield and Oakland-based Kaiser Permanente will withdraw policies for a combined 280,000. Highmark Health Services of Pittsburgh said 40,000 customers will need to find new plans. CareFirst Blue Cross Blue Shield sent notices to more than 70,000 customers in Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Virginia that their current plans don’t comply with the law.

As many as 80 percent of people who don’t have a company-hosted plan or insurance through the Medicare or Medicaid government programs may have to find new health coverage, said Robert Laszewski, an insurance-industry consultant in Arlington, Virginia. About 19 million people are included in this market.

Plans bought before March 23, 2010, when the law known as Obamacare was enacted, can stay in effect under a “grandfather” clause if they haven’t changed significantly since then.

In California, the insurance shift affects 2.5 percent of Kaiser Permanente’s members, said Won Ha, a spokesman for the insurer. About 600,000 to 700,000 consumers with individual health plans will be affected, said Peter V. Lee, the director of Covered California, the state’s health insurance exchange. health care????? the government doesn't need to help you provide health care for yourself.....they want to subsidize and force your
hand to purchase medical interventions.

I shouldn't have to subsidize your ability to exercise/eat right etc etc.....that's your choice/RESPONSIBILITY...and to the extent

Over 2 million people have enrolled in health insurance plans through the
federally run HealthCare.gov and state healthcare websites since enrollment began in
October, U.S. officials said on Tuesday.

While the numbers of enrollees fall short of the 3.3 million enrollees the Obama administration
was hoping for by the end of year, the number is a dramatic improvement from the early
weeks of the program when barely 150,000 signed up for coverage through HealthCare.gov
because of a series of technical problems.

HealthCare.gov covers 36 states; another 14 states have their own websites.
