Gun crime has plunged in the United States since its peak in the middle of the 1990s, including gun killings, assaults, robberies and other crimes, two new studies of government data show.
Yet few Americans are aware of the dramatic drop, and more than half believe gun crime has risen, according to a newly released survey by the Pew Research Center.
In less than two decades, the gun murder rate has been nearly cut in half. Other gun crimes fell even more sharply, paralleling a broader drop in violent crimes committed with or without guns. Violent crime dropped steeply during the 1990s and has fallen less dramatically since the turn of the millennium.
The number of gun killings dropped 39% between 1993 and 2011, the Bureau of Justice Statistics reported in a separate report released Tuesday. Gun crimes that weren’t fatal fell by 69%. However, guns still remain the most common murder weapon in the United States, the report noted. Between 1993 and 2011, more than two out of three murders in the U.S. were carried out with guns, the Bureau of Justice Statistics found.
The bureau also looked into non-fatal violent crimes. Few victims of such crimes -- less than 1% -- reported using a firearm to defend themselves.
Despite the remarkable drop in gun crime, only 12% of Americans surveyed said gun crime had declined compared with two decades ago, according to Pew, which surveyed more than 900 adults this spring. Twenty-six percent said it had stayed the same, and 56% thought it had increased.
It’s unclear whether media coverage is driving the misconception that such violence is up. The mass shootings in Newtown, Conn., and Aurora, Colo., were among the news stories most closely watched by Americans last year, Pew found. Crime has also been a growing focus for national newscasts and morning network shows in the past five years but has become less common on local television news. http://www.latimes.com/news/nation/nationnow/la-na-nn-gun-crimes-pew-report-20130507,0,3022693.story

Actually, it is CRYSTAL CLEAR that media coverage IS driving this misconception.

why are gun killings any more worthy of media than any other killings?
You know the answer to that, agenda.

It has nothing to do with anything else. Just 'agenda driven'.

Yup agenda, why aren't you posting the victims of the recent arson murders, because you don't care about them, their deaths can't fit into a anti-gun agenda like yours. Their deaths are just the same, both murders except you can use the deaths of one group of kids.

These kids are symbols, used by the anti-gun supporters like Chuck Schumer...visuals that are very effective.
Never mind the actual statistics that CLEARLY show the reduction in gun violence over the last 15 years, they don't want you go to beyond the pictures and listening to the parents.

It is the agenda to tyrannize Americans and subjugate us to the whims of the communist political class. Box is a member of the subjugating class. We will not roll over for communists and those that wish to enslave us by using the dead children as a political blunt object. However, if Box and other wish to disarm me at any time, then I invite to try. I am sure he is scared to put his words to deeds, and insists on relying on the armed forces to turn against law abiding Americans on the order of the political/criminal/tyrant class.
"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."

Disarm you Graham??? Where did I support DISARMING ANYONE? That BS fits YOUR agenda, not mine.
Please show my post where I suggest DISARMING anyone except criminals and the mentally ill. I'll wait....

CLEVELAND (AP) — Three women found alive after a decade in captivity endured lonely, dark lives inside a dingy home where they were raped and allowed outside only a handful of times in disguises while walking to a garage steps away, investigators say.
Playboy is an American men's magazine that features photographs of nude women as well as journalism and fiction. It was founded in Chicago in 1953 by Hugh Hefner and his associates, and funded in part by a $1,000 loan from Hefner's mother.[3] The magazine has grown into Playboy Enterprises, Inc., with a presence in nearly every medium. Playboy is one of the world's best known brands.[4] In addition to the flagship magazine in the United States, special nation-specific versions of Playboy are published worldwide.
you tell me the value of control over one person's freedoms/rights....tell me that 'gun control' makes these kids in newtown anymore important than any other kid....tell me that playboy should be outlawed 'controlled' etc.....
and you don't get to say 'at least those girls are alive'
...you are a product of your environment, your environment is a product of your priorities, your priorities are a product of you......
The replacement of morality and conscience with law produces a deadly paradox.
