Despite his injuries the intruder, believed to be aged in his 30s, made away with 76-year-old Mrs Dowdy's handbag containing cash and bank cards.
Both men remain on the run.
Meanwhile, police arrested another man, allegedly wanted over break and enters in Brisbane after a high-speed chase in Nambour on the Sunshine Coast yesterday.
Police have not revealed what crimes they believe the man had committed.
Police have also charged a 27-year-old woman after she allegedly forced her way inside a home in Townsville in the early hours of yesterday morning and stabbed a 67-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman.

In other police news, a man was attacked by a group of teenagers near Burswood Train Station yesterday.
The man was walking along Goodwood Parade to the train station, when he was approached by four or five teenagers, who ripped a gold chain from his neck.
The man was then punched and kicked and had his wallet stolen as he lay on the ground.
Anyone with any information about the incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers.
An open front door was all police believe it took for an intruder to decide to walk into a Sydney house.
Without warning or provocation, the young man then attacked a 37-year-old mother while her two young daughters slept, punching her in the face and stabbing her in the neck with a screwdriver.
And police fear he could strike again.
"We are very concerned (he will attack again) because at this stage it seems to be a random attack and we have no identity as to the offender," Superintendent Doreen Cruikshank said on Friday.
Her words of warning come a day after the man, whose age is estimated at 18 to 20, assaulted the woman inside her Cromer home, on Sydney's northern beaches.
The mother, now in hospital suffering facial injuries and shock, was returning home from shopping with her two young daughters.
She left the front door open while she put the kids, aged one and three, down for a nap about 1.30pm (AEST).
It was all the invitation the intruder needed.
"From our investigation it would appear he's seen the open door and walked in," Supt Cruikshank told reporters in Dee Why, adding there was no sign of forced entry.
Supt Cruikshank said police were worried the attacker may strike again because of the random nature of the attack - "he left without taking anything," he said.
The serious nature of the offence meant police were investigating every possible lead.
"It is a serious assault on this lady... she's in her own home in broad daylight with two small children," Supt Cruikshank said.
"We ask everybody to be vigilant about security in their own homes and to make sure their doors are locked."
Police said the woman had gone to investigate a noise when she was grabbed from behind.
As she struggled, the intruder punched her several times in the face and then struck her with a screwdriver multiple times, cutting her neck.
He tied her hands and tried to put a bag over her head.
Police said the attacker left after the Sydney mother put up a fight.
She remains in hospital in a stable condition with neck and head injuries while her daughters were unharmed.
"The lady put up quite a struggle ... she is in shock ... ," Supt Cruickshank said.
Police on Friday launched a hunt to find her attacker, with officers scouring the home and surrounding bushland.
The intruder is described as being of Middle Eastern or Pacific Islander appearance with a solid build and a medium complexion.
A man was stabbed with his own kitchen knife as he chased an intruder from his home in Melbourne's outer east.
Police say the 48-year-old man was sleeping on the couch of his home in Cloverlea Drive, Wantirna, about 6pm (AEDT) on Monday when he was disturbed by a noise in the kitchen.
He discovered a young man in the kitchen, who fled.
The man pursued the unidentified intruder outside but was stabbed in the abdomen with a knife from the kitchen.
The intruder escaped, and has not been located despite a search by police.
The injured man was taken to The Alfred hospital in a serious but stable condition.
A woman cut on the neck by an intruder as she slept has undergone emergency surgery in Newcastle. Police say the 21-year-old was asleep on a couch in a house at Kitchener in the NSW Hunter Valley when she was awoken by someone leaning over her about 2.30am (AEDT) on Thursday.
The intruder then cut her on her neck and her scream alerted others in the Aberdare Street home who rushed to help her.
A male resident gave chase but lost sight of the attacker.
The injured woman was taken to Newcastle's John Hunter Hospital where she underwent emergency surgery. She is in a stable condition.
Police believe the intruder - thought to be a man - got into the house through a rear door.
They are now seeking information on a person described as having a stocky build and wearing a dark-coloured, long-sleeved shirt.
Anyone with information on the incident is urged to contact Maitland Police via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Justin McMaster, 19, was shot following reports of an armed break-in at the family home in Colyton.
The family of police shooting victim Justin McMaster say they are very relieved a man has been arrested for breaking into their house.
Police shot Mr McMaster, 19, in the stomach outside his family's home in Colyton, western Sydney, as he tried to protect his sister Kayla McMaster, 17, from three armed intruders.
He was outside the house in Holmes Street holding a length of metal from aluminum blinds but police, who were responding to a report of an armed robbery, thought he was carrying a knife. Kayla told the Herald this week that she and her mother had yelled at police that Mr McMaster was a member of the family when they saw a Taser and gun pointed at him.
Mr McMaster's mother, Georgia Karakizos said the three robbers had assaulted her and her partner Paul Sciberras and threatened to rape Kayla.
The family's lawyer Greg Walsh said the family were still waiting to receive counselling over the ordeal, but were pleased that an arrest had been made.
"They are also very relieved that the commissioner responded by forming a taskforce," Mr Walsh said.
However, when Ms Karakizos spoke to the Herald this week, she said the family were upset that it had taken so long to make an arrest, because they had given police the names of the intruders a week and a half ago.

He did not apply for bail and it was formally refused. He is due to appear in Penrith Local Court in December.

Mr McMaster remains in the surgical unit at Westmead Hospital.
alot of folks hope the government makes their neighbor less powerful/stronger than them whether it be gun removal/testosterone removal/crowbar removal/money removal/nutritional removal etc etc so that they feel safe and equalized.
the government doesn't make people smarter, as a matter of fact it's quite the opposite, however the government insidiously gives the plebs the feeling of equalized safety/health/security/reward, much like puppies stuck eating dry dog food for their lives, getting auto immune diseases and other skin inflammatory diseases of which they must march to the veterinarian for treatment because, IT'S UN NATURAL.

9 out of 10 rapists preferring an unarmed society sounds very believable. 9 out of 10 car jackers probably do too. 9 out of 10 armed robbers surely do. 9 out of 10 burglars would also prefer unarmed homeowners. It's probably closer to 10 out of 10, but there is likely a random idiot criminal that wants to make it sporting. I'll bet 9 out of 10 criminals in general would like an unarmed society. Australia banned guns and they have more sexual assaults per capita than any state in the US. It's not proof, it's just a statistic, but stats are proof for Box. Well really only when they favor his position.
LMAO! This is so funny!!!
"It's not proof, it's just a statistic," NO IT ISN'T... It's just made up facts!
See how it works Joe..., this crew just INVENTS NUMBERS AS IF THEY WERE REAL! It doesn't have to be true... there is no study or poll... they just make it up as they go along!
It works like this... you start with an agenda... then you make up FACTS to fit the agenda... try it: 9 out of 10 RightWingers on this board are certified lunatics!

No, actually they want to push people's buttons and get their jollies that way...sicko, demented, narrow minded, inconsiderate, self centered idiots that have no concern for other individuals or the feelings of others. Everything is fair game to them, becuase nothing outside of the way they think is right. It's the old schoolyard mentality of "Hey, it's my ball so we play according to my rules". In other words, this is their vehicle to prove their manhood, becuase it doesn't exist any other way! It takes a man to say SORRY or HEY, DIDN'T MEAN TO MAKE LIGHT OF THAT, or anything like that...so you see, we are dealing with mental midgets that do just the opposite. So to both of our resident chest thumpers...FIRE AWAY! I would not want to deprive your depraved minds.
JUST BECAUSE SISSY SAYS SO DOESN'T MAKE IT SO...BUT HE THINKS IT DOES!!!!! JUST BECAUSE MC1 SAYS SO DOESN'T MAKE IT SO!!!!!

Awwww...Poor baby...Like it was common knowledge that you know somebody that was raped. Do you go around in life expecting people to be on pins and needles because of some emotional scar you have because of an event they are unaware of? That's a pretty crappy thing to expect out of people. And whether you know it or not, it was a very good rhetorical tactic to paint me as the bad guy and limit debate. It's kinda like saying you can't use hyperbole when debating abortion because you know somebody that had an abortion and it would be inseeeeeensitive.
BTW...My comment about 9 out of 10 rapist support gun control is actually sympathetic of the victim. If a helpless rape victim was allowed a gun, they could protect themselves from the stronger and more violent rapist. But, if people want to make it harder to obtain a weapon for protection, then they can expect to make more victims of violent assaults like rape. But as box said, people should be grateful they are only sexually assaulted and not shot.

Awww you poor disillusioned idiot....the fact that I know someone that had this horrific experience is the basis for my contempt. The fact that you didn't know was never an issue. I was making a point of my position and why I was pi$$ed. Had nothing to do with you knowing it or not!
The fact that anyone, idiots included, make light of rape, period, is pathetic at best. Forget that I know someone...just the fact that you make a sicko comment about rape is reprehensible, period. But you don't get that. Then to cover it up with hyperbole, is just that, cover up.

I see that you are pissed, but how's that my fault? I can't control your emotions, only you can. Get a grip man! It's not that big of a deal. You seem to be coming unhinged. Maybe you need to take a break from this message board and do a little self reflection and figure out why a post on a message board that wasn't even directed at your personal tragedy would get you so upset.
